Talk about March madness.

The Southern men’s and women’s basketball teams have been the pace-setters in the Southwestern Athletic Conference all season long. They’re both in first place with five games left in the regular season, but they might have to sit out the conference tournament in 2½ weeks and miss out on a chance to play in the NCAA tournament.

Every Jaguars team is indefinitely banned from postseason play because a routine review of data supplied by the university to the NCAA included a great deal of “unusable data” regarding student-athletes’ academic performance dating to 2009.

NCAA: Southern has “significant amount of work” to complete

Southern officials are working overtime to try to get a postseason ban lifted for the Jaguars basketball teams, but until the university completely satisfies an NCAA request for a monumental amount of paperwork, each program’s postseason fate is in limbo.

The NCAA said Thursday that the postseason ban is “indefinite” until the organization “determines that the data (the Jaguars) have submitted is usable.”

The ban was instituted “because the academic progress data the school submitted is unusable,” NCAA spokesperson Michelle Brutlag wrote in an email responding to The Advocate’s request for details on the sanctions.

The people responsible for Southern’s shortcomings are no longer in position to be responsible for cleaning up the mess. That enormous challenge has fallen to Chancellor James Llorens, Athletic Director William Broussard and a campus-wide task force that has been working overtime since December to accumulate the paperwork necessary to dot every I and cross every T to the NCAA’s satisfaction.

Southern sent another batch of paperwork to the NCAA on Wednesday in its ongoing effort to have a postseason ban lifted.

The university met its ninth deadline set by the NCAA in order to allow it to make a ruling in time for the Jaguars men’s and women’s basketball teams to participate in the upcoming Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament and potentially the ensuing NCAA tournament in the event of a favorable ruling.

Southern is attempting to fully document the academic performance of its student-athletes during the past four years.

BUT, you all are STILL banned. Regardless of who's been fired and gone.

The postseason ban will prevent the Jaguars women from participating in the SWAC indoor track meet this weekend. The men’s indoor team was already ineligible.

For now . Waiting on a NCAA ruling.

Yeah, but it's not as simple as you're trying to make this out.

“The data were incomplete, inaccurate and the school could not produce documentation to verify the information it submitted,” continued Hosick, the NCAA’s associate director of public and media relations. “A significant amount of work must be completed before NCAA postseason eligibility can be restored.

Yeah, but it's not as simple as you're trying to make this out.

They completed everything. Being that APR goes back 5 years they had to go back to 2003. We will get the official word from the NCAA. The NCAA promised if SU meet the deadlines they would get a ruling in time for the tournament.

If the school is banned and this investigation has been ongoing since December 7th, why wasn't su banned from the SCG until this matter was cleared up?

The best teams should be there and I hope SU is present!

Thank you. The SWAC presidents think so as well. :lmao: *snicker* Beans is just a hater but I'm sure we would hear a rat piss on cotton if it was JSU. Most of their posters should fall off the face of the earth.
