So FAMU and Valley in the MEAC/SWAC challenge?

This could ultimately be a disaster for the SWAC and black college football. Not because of the talent level, but because of the attendance. MVSU has struggled to get students who live ON CAMPUS to attend football games. And now they're asking people to go to Florida to see them play in a game which will be nationally televised. Mark my words, no one will look good by the end of this game.

If ESPN and Disney were concerned about attendance, they would move the game. Orlando is just not a good spot. Heck, even the Disney in LA would be better than Orlando. But FAMU playing in the game will ensure at least 20K in the stands.

...they would move it from the heat of the day also. I was at the SU/Del State game,it was hot as hell.

TP, I agree with you on this. Especially with ESPN and Disney pushing the game. They could turn it into an event. The LA area seems to have supported HBCU Classics in the past with good attendance but just had bad promoters or sponsors. You can't get much bigger than Disney who owns ABC and ESPN. Now I am sure it is CHEAPER to put on that game in Orlando than L.A. or Anaheim. So that could be their rationale. But I know I would be more inclined to go out to L.A. for that game than Orlando. Plus it would not be a 100 degrees either.

They were trying to use this game to tie into the Tom Joyner Black Family Reunion Weekend, but I never really saw the cross selling they were trying to get. I dont listen to Tom Joyner, but does he market the game as part of his weekend? Also, travel to Orlando is much cheaper than LA in terms of plane tickets and hotels. If folks wont go to Orlando, what makes people think they will jump to go to LA?

I could see the local alumni within a 4 hour drive going to the game (that includes Tallahassee), but I dont really expect a nationwide push. I have no need to go to Orlando twice in a year.

Note the differences I posted above in terms of cost. And for families, there is a lot more to do in Orlando. If you are talking nightlife, LA hands down. And I dont assume LA is a slam dunk, as they have not been able to consistently put a game together out there. LA works for Gram and SU, because the migration pattern of LA Blacks to Los Angeles. After that, the biggest tie ins are probably Howard and Morehouse. That doesnt really work for a SWAC MEAC challenge.

The SWAC challenge was set up for the defending champions or top ranked teams to battle from both conferences. The SWAC has murdered this game because the SWAC never wins! I have to give Southern a little bit of credit for winning the charity matches against two losing MEAC teams. I don't hate on Southern for beating on those two weak MEAC teams because Bama St, Grambling and Jackson didn't complete the job. SU sales tickets and brings fans to games. Espn and Disney had to put SU in the game to save the challenge. It Valley doesn't win, I think they will call SU again next year to play a 2-10 Morgan State to help the SWAC win another challenge and bring over 20,000 to the stadium.

The MEAC has been given an overwhelming advantage time and again due to the fact that at the end of the year, their representative usually is one of the better teams in their conference, whereas the SWAC school is one of the lower tier teams in it's conference for that particular year.

I don't think you need as many folks to go to LA as you do to Orlando. The locals in LA will do a better job in suppport. Didn't Morehouse and PV draw 50K at the Angel City Classic a few years back? Folks in LA don't get to see HBCU football often. Even the MLB Urban League Classic did better in LA than it is doing in Houston from what attendance numbers are being said. Go figure.

Labor Day weekend in L.A. would be way more attractive for folks. Especially if you got a decent matchup. Even Las Vegas would be better. But Disney ain't in LV.

How is MVSU getting out word to their fans? Seems like there isn't strong awareness of the game with the folks I have spoken with. Will there even be 1k there from Valley?

Exactly. That's like someone bragging on beating up a retarded midget.

Ok so was it anyone's fault that GSU gave Hampton the win in 06? Let's see, Tim Manuel XP being blocked in OT, he also missed a chip shot FG at the end of regulation plus Gram not going for 2 anyway. Don't knock us for winning the Challenge because we didn't have a say so in who we were going up against. I hate all this you all beat below level MEAC teams and I have witnessed a few SWAC schools give the MEAC wins.

I think 1K is a fair expectation. I'll be there pulling for Valley. In a JSU shirt, of course. I think the GO Network has done a good job of marketing it locally. THey've been at a lot of events around town marketing the game, and I've even received phone calls from them. They said that normally they would reach out to the local alumni base for the schools to help get the word out. They haven't had success doing that for Valley. I'm not sure if they have a chapter in Orlando, and I don't know of any Valley alum out here, myself.

But the success of this year's game will rely heavily on FAMU.

Well...there will be an announcement on whether the Marching 100 will be going this week. If the 100 is there, then you can expect an attendance boost...if they aren't in attendance, I can see 20,000+ being there. A lot of FAMU alumni are in the Central Florida area...especially Orlando and Tampa. Also a lot of fans may be saving money for the FAMU vs. TnSU game in Tallahassee the following weekend which should be a sellout.

That 2010 game was evenly matched because we went 2-9 that season. Who really expected FAMU to have a bad season in 2007 like that? Heck, SU folks didn't expect our team to go 8-3 that season either since it was a young team coming off of 2 straight losing seasons. Either way, our team took care of business. That is something the other SWAC schools can't say.

Some of these people will come up with any excuse to justify those MEAC/SWAC Challenge losses. It's so sad and unbecoming. :emlaugh: Let's go Valley hold it down for S.U. (our tradition of kicking ass in that game), Valley and the SWAC.

And I'm not going to mention the names of the coaches who gave the MEAC wins
