Grambling State Tigers Set to Tangle with Tennessee State Tigers in Inaugural Silver Dollar Classic in Las Vegas

July 9, 2002

LAS VEGAS ?With a long, rich, tradition-laden history in the Eastern United States, the Historically Black College and University (HBCU) experience is heading west this fall with the kick off of the Inaugural Silver Dollar Classic Sept. 21 in Las Vegas. The game will feature the Grambling State University (GSU) Tigers, the 2001 Southwestern Athletic Conference champions, against the Tennessee State University (TSU) Tigers, which finished 8-3 last season.

This match up between two proud and storied football programs will rekindle the rivalry while officially introducing the ?City of Excitement,? to the athletic and cultural phenomenon of HBCUs. Long heralded throughout the Southeast, HBCU football weekends are a chance for alumni, family, friends and fans to gather, watch sports, reminisce, network and take part in a number of exceptional activities.

?HBCU fans bring the atmosphere of a major bowl weekend everywhere they go,? said Earl Harris, vice president of operations for the Silver Dollar Classic. ?We are excited about the Silver Dollar because this event will share a tradition that is already prevalent in the East by bringing that atmosphere to the rest of the country and to a fantastic venue.?

The ?Cat Fight in the Desert? will begin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday as the two teams tangle in Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas. Following the game, fans from both teams will be able to attend a post-game gala and enjoy a night on the Vegas strip, spreading the fun, excitement and essence of an HBCU football weekend throughout one of the world?s liveliest cities.

Friday, Sept. 20 the Silver Dollar Classic kicks off with official school happy hours for both GSU and TSU, followed by a step show and a much anticipated duel between two of the most exciting marching bands in all of college football.

The festivities continue Saturday with a Career, College and Law Enforcement Expo where students, fans and job seekers can make contacts and receive information about new opportunities. Before the game Saturday there will be a marketplace venue, used to show goods, ethnic artifacts and services to the general public.
