Siena 4.5 point favorites - as they should be.

So Siena is taking on the Champs of the SWAC, also known as "Some Weak Ass Conference".

Siena may be 16-18, but they are not a 16-18 SWAC-type team. Saints can run, they are deep, they have size and they do something that Alcorn State doesn't do - play defense.

Saints FG% defense is Top 10 in the country.

Big problem for Alcorn State will be Siena's size in the backcourt. Prosper Karangwa is Siena's starting PG. He's 6'7" and has the ability to post up. Dwayne Archbold, though listed as a forward, plays the 2-guard spot and occasionally runs the point. Archbold is 6'6" and is one of the best all-around players on the east coast. Tommy Mitchell is a 6'3" freshman, backup point guard. Mitchell is the most athletic player on the Siena roster - he hails from Texas and was courted by the likes of several Big 12 schools (don't ask me how we got him).

It seems the two teams are pretty equal in the frontcourt - but Siena's size and talent in the backcourt will be Alcorn's downfall.

We were told on our board that "smack" talk was encouraged over here - so take this post with a grain of salt. I certainly mean no disrespect and it should be a fun game to watch tomorrow night.

And Siena is fortunate to have finished in 7th place. We're on our 3rd coach in 3 years (Paul Hewitt left in 2000 for geargia Tech & Louis Orr left last year for Seton Hall).

Is it true that you guys have a non-conference win over a school named Bugalugaloo?

Isnt this an oxymoron? We got this and that...and oh yeah, btw we are 16-18.

Saints fans expected another 20 win season, but our new coach took a little longer to get his legs under him than we originally thought.

Siena had a lot of talent returning this year from last years 20-11 team.

Rob Lanier, Siena's new coach stressed defense and neglected the offense. He tried to take a Siena team that played run-n-gun for the last four years and turn them into a "bashketball" type of team.

At the beginning of our league tournament, he finally let the team go back to its old style of play and Siena steamrolled through the tournament.

How embarassing will it be for Alcorn State to get thumped by a 16-18 team?

Also, Siena would be 25-5 with the schedule you guys played this year (Bugalugaloo). Give Alcorn Siena's schedule and you guys wouldn't win 6 games.

And this is how you treat him...

Not only did they enter the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament with a 12-18 record, but in the quarterfinals (after they had actually won a game) some fan called for the firing of rookie coach Rob Lanier by holding up a "Dump Lanier" sign

That was pretty low class. Siena has fans that always carry high expectations. Saints draw anywhere from 7,000-10,000 for home games. I live in the NYC area, so I'm about 3 hrs away. I only made it to one home game before the MAAC tournament and I couldn't believe how bad the fans were giving it to the coach and the team - but they deserved it. As of the last regular season game of the year - the team showed no improvement and the coaching staff seemed to have regressed.

I, and many other fans, were very critical of our new coach on our message board; But that sign that was held up, which was only about 25 feet from the Siena bench, was uncalled for. That sign has been the topic of numerous articles in the Albany area.

Funny how winning changes everything.

Some good Siena articles this morning in one of the Albany papers:

www.timesunion.com

go to the sports section, there are 3 or 4 articles.

Alcorn by eleven. If they didn't play the conference tournament at home we wouldn't be talking to soupster. They won one game away from home (1-17).

Soupsters tell us about that weak azz center. He's tall and average less than 5 points a game, his downside is defense. LMAO....they call 5 points a game offense. Fleming, Cook, and Harper will have a field day inside.

This ain't the first time a SWAC schools has met someone from that lame azz conference. Soupster, ask your cousin Canisius about Alcorn.

You must be referring to the info put up on cbssportsline.com. Not sure where they came up with that staring line-up. Here's the starting line-up for Siena and their key reserves:

Point Guard:
Prosper Karangwa, Junior, 6'7". Dished out 33 assists during the MAAC tournament while committing on 8 turnovers. Is a member of the Canadian National Basketball team (along with the likes of Steve Nash) and will participate in the 2004 Summer Olympics. Was the second leading scorer for the Candian team at the Goodwill Games last summer. Is the second leading scorer for Siena (11ppg). Siena's only legitimate NBA prospect.

Shooting Guard:
Dwayne Archbold, Senior, 6'6". Averaged 20 pts & 7 boards per game. One of the best all-around players on the east coast. Has made 98 3pt fgs this year. Scored 111 points in 4 MAAC tournament games.

Small Forward:
Andy Cavo, Senior, 6'6". Siena's best pure shooter. Been hampered this year by injury, dislocated both shoulders at various points during the year. Returned to full health just in time for the tournament and averaged 14ppg in the tourney.

Power Forward:
James Clinton, Senior, 6'8. Potentially, Siena's most talented player. Also been hampered by injury this year (foot), but returned to full strength just in time for the tournament. Had a solid tournament. When healthy, is a legitimate power forward with length and his range extends to three point land. Had a solid MAAC tournament, averaging 10ppg & 6 boards.

Center:
Justin Miller, Sophomore, 6'9. Struggled all season after having an excellent freshman season. Had 14 points & 12 boards vs. Niagara in the final of the MAAC tournament. An athletic power forward/center that can catch and run. Shoots well from 3pt land.

Key Reserves:
Tommy Mitchell, Freshman, 6'3". backup Point Guard. Best athlete on Siena. Best defensive player on Siena.

Austin Andrews, Sophomore, 6'9". Backup small forward with excellent range from deep. Always provides energy off the bench.

Michael Burhman, Junior, 6'9", 235lbs. Hampered by a knee injury. Is a very capable three point shooter. An effective wide body that rebounds/takes charges and plays solid defense.

Brent Sniezyk, Freshman, 6'10, 250lbs. Legitimate major division 1 prospect out of high school, with a legitimate big time body. Chose Siena to stay close to home. Had offers from PITT, Rutgers, BC. Will develop into one of the better centers Siena has ever had. Depending on matchups, he could get anywhere from 15 minutes a game to 2 minutes a game.

JJ Harvey, Sophomore, 6'4. Backup guard. Second best defender on Siena. Very, very athletic. Plays 10 minutes a game. Not much on offense. Chose basketball over playing major division 1 football.

Miller/Clinton will more than hold their own on the inside vs. Alcorn. The MAAC's frontcourts are much more talented than anything in the SWAC and Miller/Clinton had there way throughout the tournament.

Saints are not 1-17 on the road. Not sure where they got that from.

As far as winning the tournament on our home floor, the tournament has been held in our building 10 times over the past 13 years because we're the only school in our league that draws any fans. This is the first time Siena won the tournament on their home floor - I can't tell you how many #1 & #2 seeds they have pissed away over the last decade when the tournament was in Albany.

Canisius? You must be kidding. One of the worst teams in Division 1 this year.

The more I look at Alcorn/SWAC - you guys are going to get embarassed tomorrow night. Siena by 15+. Your backcourt is going to be overwhelmed because they are too small and there is no depth at the point.

This is probably viena first time making it to the tournament and they want to get on our page and talk smack. Boy I tell ya about scrubs.....

Soupster,

Canisius, no I'm not kidding. I agree with you that they are weak, but they are in your conference and kicked Siena's azz. We did what was expected, kicked their azz.

You posted all that to say your team is weak. LMAO....best pure shooter Siena ever had. Your post only supports what we already know....Your team sucks and only got in because they played at home. Since you claim no one has it right, please post Siena wins away from home.

Four wins away from home:

Austin Peay 62-44
Iona 79-70
Loyola 82-76
St. Peter's 73-55

4-13 on the road. 12-5 at home.

Siena stunk on the road, but when you consider they played @ Providence, @ Oklahoma St, @ Xavier etc....it's not that bad. Siena has lost a ton of close games, but that's no excuse.

Can't wait till Siena hammers you guys.

Siena got in the tournament because they were the best MAAC team during the tournament.

This is Siena's 3rd trip to the tournament.
1989 - 14 seed. Beat Stanford in first round 80-78 and lost to Minnesota in 2nd round 80-67.

1999 - 13 seed. Lost to Arkansas in 1st round 94-80.

Soupsters,

On the SWACPAGE we don't consider $#!&. Bottom line is that yall suck away or at home.

Why did you leave Mark Price out of the lineup? A few of the Siena fans said Alcorn would win by 20 points if Mark Price played 10 minutes. Tell us about Mark Price? Why do yall think he suck and still gets plenty of PT.

Price played PG for Siena the entire regular season. He averaged about 25 minutes a game and about 10ppg. But he's more of a shooting guard, not a true PG. WIth Price at the helm, SIena went 12-18 and couldn't do a thing on offense. His running of the offense consisted of dribbling the ball at half court until there were less than 10 secs on the shot clock - it was terrible to watch.

As the MAAC tournament began, Price came down with a sinus infection that landed him in the hospital and followed that up with an absessed tooth. He sat out the entire tournament. Siena's coach turned the reigns over to Karangwa at the point guard spot. Because Karangwa is 6'7 and is at times unstoppable at the offensive end, Lanier had him playing at the shooting guard spot all year. Karangwa immediately took control of the team in the MAAC tournament and the Saints averaged more than 83ppg during the tourney, 17 more than the regular season. Siena couldn't score at home or on the road during the regular season. Karangwa moving to his natural PG position was a blessing in disguise.

As a Siena fan, I hope Mark Price doesn't get off the bench.

Another big turnaround for Siena was getting healthy at the right time. Cavo & Clinton both played hurt or missed a good chunk of the season. They didn't get healthy until tourney time.

Morris Brown??????

No wonder you guys are in the NCAA PIG with 20 wins, looking at you guys schedule and league, all I can say is it SUCKS. You guys lost to a team called Morris Brown ranked 305 in the country? Not only did you guys lose to every legitimate D1 basketball team you played, you guys normally got hammered. The more I look at Alcorn State the more convinced I am a Siena wins by 15 points or more. You guys should consider it a pleasure and an honor to be on the same floor as the Saints, because Siena is going to surly pound Alcorn into submission. Enjoy your beating boys ;-)

Siena does play football. They are Division I-AA. Their football league is also called the MAAC. The MAAC football league is VERY similar to the SWAC's basketball conference - IT SUCKS.
