HATTIESBURG ? Southern Miss will be without five projected starters ? including its leading returning rusher and half its defensive backfield ? when it opens the football season Sept. 4 with Tulane.

Four veteran players have been disciplined for an unspecified violation of team rules, coach Jeff Bower said Thursday. Two were kicked off the team and two were and suspended for the game against the Green Wave.

Two other veterans who were involved in the violations that led to the dismissals/suspensions quit the team.

Bower dismissed starting safety Darrell Bennett, a senior, and junior reserve linebacker Kenneth Boley.

He suspended senior cornerback John Eubanks and senior tight end Pedi Causey, both projected starters, for the Tulane game.

Senior fullback Anthony Harris and senior strong-side linebacker Naton Stewart, both projected starters, left the team.

Stewart, who came out of the spring as the starter at strong-side, had been suspended for the 2004 regular-season finale after being arrested and charged with DUI earlier in the season.

Both Eubanks, Conference USA's Special Teams Player of the Year in 2004, and Bennett were anchors in a secondary that at least one preseason magazine had tabbed among the best in the nation.

Harris led USM with 714 yards and five touchdowns last season as the team's top tailback. He had been shifted to fullback in the spring and was being counted upon as one of the team's offensive leaders.

A total of four players have departed the USM Golden Eagles that could potentially help any Div I-AA program. A safety, 2 linebackers, and a fullback. Someone is going to pick these guys up regardless of their past...Should it be JSU..

All I know is that Eubanks is a stud, that cat can FLY!!!!!!!!!! If he was in the SWAC, think Cletus Gordon times 4, and there u have Eubanks.
he can't be to much better than Cletus . Cletus is a projected 1st round pick.

J-State is predicted to finish last in the East. If this isn't an indication that JSU needs some immediate help, what is??????

They should go after all the Div I-A players they can get. It's not a good idea to be so selective. Bell has this year to win the SWAC or He's supposed to be out.

Eubanks is on the ballot for best defensive player of the year. Also some other ballot for kick returner of the year

The response from USM players-time is running out J-state
Bennett said he plans on transferring to McNeese State, his hometown school.

"My (mother) wanted me to come back home and play," Bennett said.

Bennett said Stewart and Harris had been looking at other schools as well, including Nicholls State.

You guys are funny....please don't cry for JSU because when we put our foot way up your azz, we ain't gonna cry for you. We are going to laugh at you and let you know how smalltime, lowly and sad you are.

What about Alcorn or Valley?

In this case, some of the players just go "caught up".

Only 1 got arrested for fighting I believe, another for something minor. The others were kicked off the team just for being at the High Hat Club. The article in Saturdays paper said that Jeff Bower had made that place off limit's to player's a long time ago.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Me too.

That place has been around forever.
But if a coach say's a place is OFF-LIMITS, as a player you better stay away.

Croom has done the same at MISS State. There are a couple of clubs that are off-limit's for his players also.

I had a good time in the High Hat also. I been there many times. The football team had fights at the VFW, and other clubs in Hattiesburg. Whatever the spot is that is where the fights will break out. I use to advise several student organizations at USM and two in particular had a mediation meeting with Coach Bower and players on the team, with the Vice President of Student Affairs and the Dean of Students. One group decided to ban the football players from all their parties.

I heard a rumor that 3 of them were going to McNeese. The strong saftey Bennett is from Lake Charles .

McNeese Head Coach said No.

Bennett kind of burnt his bridge to McNeese after H.S. and the coach has a long memory.

Tate is also trying to tighten the noose on team disipline, and word has it, Bennett is a "Free Spirit"
