Should a preacher smoke?

Smoking seems to not do any good for anyone except 'relaxing' them or giving them some kind of 'peace' or 'releasing stress' or whatever but all of these things we should be able to get from God.

Let's list what people get from smoking and see if anything is listed that God can't provide in a more 'non-witness hurting' way.

my opinion, plus smoking makes your breath smell like hot garbage:tdown:

I would have to agree with you. I actually told a friend of mine the other day that his breathe was just atrocious from the smoke. He got offended but I think he is going to stop after that comment.

While I cannot judge whether it is ok for a preacher to smoke or not, I can say this. A preacher is human just like the rest of us. He/she has weak points as we do. Yes, they do stand out in front and lead but are by far no different. We should all set examples for one another to follow. The Bible says that we shoud stay away from anything that will hurt, harm or danger the body...including fornication, drunkiness, adultery, laciviousness, etc.... That covers a wide range alone.

Your preacher may smoke and you may gossip. One is no different than the other in the sight of God. Leave the preacher alone and began to take inventory on self. In doing this, it will force you to humble yourself and not judge others and see that you too have faults.

These are my thoughts!!!

I DON'T THINK SO

Read what the Bible says:

1 Corinthians 3
"16 Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you? 17 If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him; for God's temple is sacred, and you are that temple.

1 Corinthians 6
"19 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body."

Now here is the question, do people that smoke ever light up inside the man made temple (i.e. church, mosque, etc.)? I think not. Why not? You may say that it's not respectful to smoke inside the church. My reply to that is so we should respect what man made but not respect what GOD made?

NOW AS THIS BROTHER PUT THE SCRIPTURES UP I DONT HAVE TO SEARCH FOR THEM.. BUT WHEN YOU LOOK AT IT PREACHERS ARE VERY KNOW PEOPLE... THEY GIVE ONE OR TWO INFLUENCES. GOOD OR BAD.. TAKE MY BRUH JESSE JACKSON FOR EXAMPLE... THE SO CALLED REVREND THAT I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF HIM HAVING A CHURCH... WHEN HIS SEX SCANDAL CAME TO LIGHT HIS PEDESTAL WAS CRUMBLED IN THE EYES OF SOME.. NOW WHEN WE LOOK AT THIS WE SHOULD LOOK AT WHAT TYPE OF INFLUENCE IT WILL HAVE ON THE PEOPLE THAT SEE HIM IN HIS ACTION... ASK YOU SELF THIS WOULD YOU INVITE THE LORD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHIRST TO SMOKE A NEWPORT AND DRINK A BUDWEISER WITH YOU... NO HE SHOULD SMOKE...

I can not believe THIS Thread is still alive.

I wasnt going to post but I had to think about this.

Would I invite the Lord to purchase a scratch off with me....People do.

Would I invite the Lord to bless those 6 numbers selected for the Lotto...People do.

Would I invite the Lord to Sup with me even though I braid my hair....People do.

What I am Saying. Would I invite the Lord to smoke a newport with me.... Yes, Just to be with the Lord... :)

Everything I listed is not a SIN but an issue of Morals.. I dont believe that people should gamble, braid their hair, smoke, nor drink....But People do.

:)

Very interesting point.

Ciggs and Blacks are perfectly legal, but they shouldn't be messin with that green. It doesn't set a good example. And I don't want to hear that "Gods law supercedes man's law argument."

Don't take this the wrong way but it's not about what you "believe." It's about what God SAYS. The world is so "jacked up" now because everyone "thinks" this and "believes" that and most times it is not based on the word of God. If your beliefs are not based ON God, THROUGH God, IN God, and AROUND God, then it does not amount to a hill of beans. Sorry! :(

God's Laws do supercede man's laws. Especially since man's laws are made by men who don't even believe in God, in some cases. Ask yourself what's acceptable in God's eyes, not man's eyes, not even your eyes. PRAY about what if anything God doesn't mind you smoking and hear from the Lord. Ask Him to show you in His Word.

Don't assume it's alright to do something just because it's "legal." Homosexual marriages are legal. Killing babies is legal. My opinion: If Jesus were physically around today, I doubt if he'd walk aroung smoking blacks, cigarettes, weed, etc.

Of course, you have gotten a different impression of Him from studying the life of Jesus.

We shouldn't do a lot of things....

For the record, I dont' smoke, don't like smoke and don't want to be around anyone who is smoking.

Preachers are human too. They're not without fault. Everyone should be striving to be as close to perfect as they can.

And before anyone goes shout'n and proclaiming what anyone due to title or preference should not do...the list can go on and on and on based on what you believe.

Example:
People shouldn't kill people. That makes them a murderer.
That's a sin.
People shouldn't committ adultry. That's a sin.

Do you really think God veiws either of the two any different.
A sin is a sin is a sin IS a sin.

Anything that you believe in your hearts that God would frown on is a sin. Live life in fear of HIM...not others who are just like you.

That's my .02 worth!

Me speaking as a preacher I feel as though that ministers SHOULD NOT smoke because our bodies doesn't belong to us. We are the temple of God. If we were created to smoke cigarettes, God whould have given us lungs to survive the ill effects that come along with smoking. Think about it???

Rev T. If God wanted us to Sin, He would not have sent his Son. Think about that?!?

Lets Talk about the Temple quote. I noticed that some posters have posted that our bodies are Temples of God. While that is true, I dont believe we are reading this right. My question to all of you is.. When was the last time you went to your Physical Temple and cleaned up? You know, Take out the Trash? When was the last time you saw that the restrooms needed mopping, so you grab the mop? Saw some paper on the ground? Candy wrapper in the Pew? Cut the Grass? We go to the temple to worship the Lord not to clean up. I believe we need to start looking at the role/function of the temple instead of how we keep the temple. Worship the Lord and His Spirit will keep you Clean.
Oh, for those Smart people, we must also keep our Physical Temples clean as well. :)

The answer is whenever you STUDY from God's scriptures (i.e. Pentateuch, Injil, Qur'an, etc.) is when you "clean" the temple. Also, obedience to The Law, will help to keep the temple clean. Just like your mama's "law" about not coming in the house with your shoes on helped to keep the carpet clean. "Worship" is ok but worship alone does not do it. Especially the way we define worship in this day and age (i.e. singing & dancing all in the aisles). That kind of worship is just like having faith without any works...It's DEAD. I have to disagree with your statement of going "to the temple to worship the Lord not to clean up." Cleaning is exactly the thing we should be doing. The world is corrupt and we as people are corruptable (CAPABLE of being corrupted) so we should be going to the temple to clean up our lives...going to clean up our minds, soul/spirit, body, etc. Because no matter how much you sweep, mop, shine, buff, cut, trim, edge, prune, and use Pledge, there will always be dust particles (corruption/sin) that will settle. And the more you let it go without cleaning, the dirtier the temple will get.

I don't see how you're relating singing, to people without works?. Are you saying most of the people who dance/sing have faith but no works? If so, how many people do you KNOW like this (unless you're assuming)? Are you observant enough of their lives to say that your own faith/works exceed theirs? Where does singing & dancing come into play???

Besides, there's nothing wrong with worshiping God through singing and dancing, standing up or sitting down, as long as you do it "in Spirit and in Truth." -John ch. 4

Question:
What do you think God's idea of True Worship is? (that is, the God of the Bible, not those other books you named.)

How do you factor in singing / dancing

Will this Thread Ever DIE?

Yes, DrummerPSI. Studying the scriptures is one way of cleaning our spiritual temple. But the point of my post was to state "Even though our bodies are temples, it's (the Temple) purpose is not just to keep it clean but to worship the Lord and since you brought this up, Our First Works.....Evangelism." I liked the way you threw Evangelism in it. ;) Yes Evangelism is our First Works but we are discussing "Smoking, Is it a Sin? and how this relate to our spiritual Temple."

The Purpose of the Temple is not too keep it Clean even though we should stive to keep a Clean Temple but to Worship the Lord. The Holy Spirit Cleans our Temple and if we dirty it up the Holy Spirit Cleans it again.

Let me break down what I mean. Singing and dancing will NOT get you into the Kingdom of God. PERIOD! If it did it would a requirement mentioned constantly in the scriptures. It is your "work" (i.e. living by the law of God, telling the "good news," etc.) I'm not saying that there is something wrong with singing and dancing, BUT if you think there is all there is to worship, then THAT is wrong.

Answer:
First of all, the first 2 books I named (Pentateuch, Injil) IS the Bible. The Pentateuch is also called the Torah. The Injil is also called the gospel. Check with your Pastor if you don't believe me (No, I'm not a pastor. I just study a lot). As far as the Holy Qur'an is concerned, that is also from the same God as the Bible. And to think that Christianity has a god, Judaism has a god, and Islam has a god, is POLYTHEISTIC. God sent people into the world to rid that type of thinking. There is only 1 God of the universe...one Creator...one Master of judgement.

Sorry Drummer, I must have misinterpreted your below statement:
Especially the way we define worship in this day and age (i.e. singing & dancing all in the aisles). That kind of worship is just like having faith without any works...It's DEAD
I thought you were just -Assuming- that some people today define worship as just dancing/singing, thus having dead works. I haven't met anyone who thought you could dance your way to heaven but I guess your surveys show otherwise. What part of Houston do you live in? Who do you KNOW that thinks like this?

Again, what do you believe is God's idea of True Worship?
(No, I'm not a pastor. I just study a lot).
:)This makes for good studying:

http://www.geocities.com/islam_fact...SH/islamvs.html

Studying about God is good, very good, but unless you actually KNOW Him through relationship you'll have the below thinking:
As far as the Holy Qur'an is concerned, that is also from the same God as the Bible.
Remember, our Bible God tells us that Jesus is the ONLY way to Heaven, our only saviour. Does the 'god' of the Qur'an teach this? As you said, "there is only 1 God of the universe...one Creator...one Master of judgement," but He has nothing to do with the teachings of the Qur'an or islam which don't teach Jesus being the ONLY messiah/way to God.

(no, I'm not a pastor either, but God IS my daddy.;)

First of all. When ever a question is asked about any subject as if it is a sin or not, YOUR OPINIONS DON'T MATTER!!!! The only thing that matters is what the word says. For those who don't know, too much of anything is bad for you and is a sin. Like the brother said earlier, when ever anyone does something to the point where it harms your body, it is at that point that it becomes a sin according to scripture. Just because you don' t like smoke don't make it a sin. Some people don't like the color blue but that don't make it a sin. Alot of people base their beliefs on fellings or myths. When it's all said and done, it is what the book says that is the truth.

And another thing. My Frat made a comment that I did not agree with. The God of the coran (or how ever you spell it) isn't the same God of the Bible. That book has alot of things in it that contridicts the bible. Hate for 1 thing. If you read Jhon3:16
Acts4:12 Romans10:8-10 You will see that the way that the bible says that you get to heaven excludes every and any other religion in the world. You see my friend, the one thing Christians have on all other denominations is that our savior died and rose and his bones are not in the grave today. Budda, confusious, The honorable Elisha Muhammad, and other founders of religion all died also, just as Jesus did. There graves are still full of their remains and there useless lies that they poisiond people with. You see, Christians have PROOF of a RISIN SAVIOR. HE SAID HE WOULD RAISE UP AND HE DID. THERE IS NO BODY. That is enough proof for me not to believe anyone else who doesn't have the power that MY savior has. If there is anyone else that has ever died and came back to life for sins let me know. Until then, I'm sticking with the absolute truth. JESUS. Find JESUS's body and I won't be a christian anymore. No one would. Bottom line is no religion can compare to christianity. Our God is the only God and besides him there is none other.

Why dont you think a preacher should not smoke.

I think a preacher should not smoke for the following reasons:

1. IT STINKS
2. It makes your teeth yella
3. It gives you bad breath
4. It offends others who don't wish to smoke
5. It can lead to cancer
6. It is a social ill
7. It doesn't look good
8. I don't want him/her to lay hands on me for prayer smelling like an ashtray
9. It makes your lungs black
10. Darkens your lips and causes wrinkles around the mouth...

And these could easily apply to ANYBODY!

YUCK!

Docmump:

Why question me about bringing up an old thread? I did not bring it up. I was responding to the thread because someone else brought it up? If I want to comment on something old or not, it matters not who remembers it being hot.

As for who brought it up, look at who posted before me. :)

OK...OK....I dont want any trouble. I come in Peace....:angel2:

Personally, I would not object to a preacher/minister smoking. I don't smoke, and don't care to be within range of it, but smoking is LEGAL!

I know preachers who DRINK! They don't over-indulge (get drunk or even tipsy.) They simply (like many of us,) enjoy a glass of wine with a meal, or a social drink such as a cocktail. Do all things in MODERATION, people!

If you use The Bible as reference, we know that many of the saints of the day enjoyed wine.

It is no better or worse for a preacher to smoke, than it is for any of us. It is a matter of one's PERSONAL health, and as such, the decision to do so should be left up to that person.

A couple of quick observations?:)

Personally, I would not object to a preacher/minister smoking. I don't smoke, and don't care to be within range of it, but smoking is LEGAL!
Doesn?t matter what?s legal. Abortions are legal, but they?ll still get you on God?s ?bad side?. God?s laws are sometimes the opposite of man?s, especially since the man who made the law may not even believe in God.

It is a matter of one's PERSONAL health, and as such, the decision to do so should be left up to that person.
This is not true for Christians. We are not our own, we were bought at a price, our body is not ours to do with what we want, we?re only stewards of what really belongs to God. As I said earlier, pray about whether you should or shouldn't smoke / drink and how much is okay with God. God doesn't want me personally to do either for some reason. If He tells you different, fine. But at least pray about it first and except God's answer.

Oh, if you say God is okay with it and then develop health problems....that was the wrong spirit you were listening to.

If you use The Bible as reference, we know that many of the saints of the day enjoyed wine.
I don?t know if that above statement is true??

but anyways, Christians often quote scriptures to feel better about what they want to do like dranking and smoking. It would be awesome if those same Christians would quote scripture about going out and witnessing in the neighborhood.

1 or 2 scriptures about wine seem to have more influence on today's saints than 1,000 or 2,000 scriptures about living right and saving the world through witnessing. Some bruhs don?t know any other scripture besides, ?Jesus turned water into wine.?:(

Again, my own personal observations.
