LSU head football coach Nick Saban met with officials of the Miami Dolphins Tuesday evening about the team's coaching position, university officials announced Wednesday.
The discussion took place after Saban notified LSU in writing of the meeting, Athletic Director Skip Bertman said.

"I owe it to the people of Louisiana and the fans of LSU football to let them know I have had a preliminary conversation with the Dolphins to exchange ideas about their head coaching position," Saban said in a university news release. "No decisions were made in this meeting and they will continue their search for a coach. I will continue to be committed to LSU, our football program and totally focused on our bowl game versus Iowa."

Bertman said he was happy with the way Saban has handled the situation.

"Life decisions like this are difficult, and it only complicates matters to have to deal with it in a public setting," Bertman said. "Nick Saban has revolutionized LSU football and he has energized the state of Louisiana, and we hope he will be our coach for a long time. But he has been forthright in his communication with the university about this and I support him in any direction that he may take."

Bertman said he would not comment further until the situation has concluded.

Re: Saban meets with Dolphins officials

Man I heard the guys on 1210 discussing this at lunch. You know they are nervous he is going to leave.

Re: Saban meets with Dolphins officials

It may come down to how much control they are willing to give him. Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga is noted for not meddling in football operations, and Saban reportedly turned down the Bears job last year because he wasn't offered control over roster and personnel issues. I'm still not sure he will leave, he's currently the highest paid coach in college football, and he makes more than most NFL coaches.

Re: Saban meets with Dolphins officials

Dr. Nupe...

you're right..

Good ol' Wayne (who made his money off Blockbuster Video/Waste Management/Auto Nation) is far from Tom Benson...if he gave Dave Wayndestadt (spell check) personnel control for much of his tenure...he'll more than likely give, as Gee Arrah and other TSPNers like to call him, "Lou" Saban the same.

but ol' Nick has been on the record saying he does not want to consider leaving until his youngest child finishes high school...so that's like 3-4 years there. Hell most of his roster this year is coming back and will be ranked in the preseason Top 10...

but here's my question that I always like to say about situations like this: Why go from being treated on God-like status to a guy that works nearly impossible hours. Hey the 20-hrs of practice is a good thing in the NCAA.

but Nick Saban does seem to have the fiya spades hand right now..he might use this attention to get some leverage in the future at LSU

Jenkins: LSU at financial limit on Saban

LSU President William Jenkins
LSU President William Jenkins said Thursday that though the school will do what it can to keep football coach Nick Saban from leaving for the Miami Dolphins, LSU is already at its limit in terms of financial compensation.
"There's always an opportunity to at least explore alternatives," Jenkins said. "We would see what we can do to continue the forward progress and momentum of our football program. But we're not talking about monetary things."

Saban is in the first year of a seven-year contract that pays him $2.3 million this season, escalating to $3 million by 2010.

Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga and team President Eddie Jones flew to Baton Rouge on Tuesday to meet with Saban. Statements from the coach and the Dolphins termed the meeting as a "preliminary conversation."

Re: Saban meets with Dolphins officials

I know that politics at LSU can get madding at times-even when one wins. But I think that Saban should stay at LSU. I would not call Miami a good situation as if I had to say that. If he does leave they may want another person picking players there.

Re: Saban meets with Dolphins officials

Saban game now is to wait
LSU coach Nick Saban and Miami Dolphins officials had their face-to-face meeting Tuesday, an encounter both sides termed a preliminary conversation. Now, he must wait for the Dolphins to make an offer. LSU Athletic Director Skip Bertman wouldn't put a timetable on it Friday, but said "I know it won't take much longer."

Dolphins offer Saban job

Wednesday, December 22, 2004

ESPN.com
One year after LSU coach Nick Saban began considering the Miami Dolphins as a franchise with which he might someday return to the NFL, Saban has the opportunity to turn intrigue into employment, ESPN.com has learned.

Saban was formally offered the Dolphins job on Wednesday, but contrary to some reports he has not yet accepted. ESPN.com has confirmed Saban will spend at least Wednesday evening and perhaps even a few more days considering the proposal and discussing it with family members.

Saban's agent Jimmy Sexton spent much of Wednesday meeting in Miami with Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga discussing contract parameters. The two made what one source termed "significant progress" toward a deal, but an agreement was not reached. Some details still need to be agreed upon.

Financial details of Miami's offer are not known. But the contract would provide Saban, if he accepts, near-absolute control over football-related decisions and allow him to help reshape the organization following its disastrous 2004 season. Sexton will review the contract with Saban on Wednesday night.

and worthless Wansted transitions AGAIN seamlessly to Pittsburg,,,,,,,, this guy has more lives than a cat.

Re: Dolphins offer Saban job

Saban is a good college coach. Like Spurrier, he should stay in the college ranks.

Regards.

He was in the pros before college Dr. Mac, at least before he became a known product.

An NFL scout and personnel consultant with ties to LSU coach Nick Saban said Wednesday night the Miami Dolphins offered their head coaching position to Saban, who could announce a decision today.
Chris Landry, an analyst for Fox Sports Radio and a consultant to college and pro teams during their coaching searches, said Dolphins officials feel good about their chances of signing Saban to a long-term contract.

Saban has told his players they can't transfer to Southern.

What was the REASONING behind not allowing LSU players to transfer to SU?

I know, Bluedog; I think it was the Bills if memory serves me right.

He didn't do much in the pros as a Head coach. He had much more success in the college ranks after he left the NFL. He wants personnel control with Miami because he thinks that will give him the same kind of control on personnel in the Pros that he has via recruiting who he wants to in college; it don't work the same way.

He should stay where he is at. But like Spurrier, he wants to see if he can compete at the highest level. He's been in the NFL before and now, apparently, wants another shot to redeem himself. He should know better and just be happy with the success that he has at LS of U.

Regards.

Bluedog:

I got him wrong, it was Lou Saban that coached the Bills. Nick was an Coordinator with the Browns so the Jury is out on him as an NFL head coach. So I guess he wants his shot.

Hope it works out and he doesn't do a "Spurrier."

Regards.

Bertman denies reports LSU upping ante to keep Saban

A Highland Road business voices its opinion on the possibility of LSU coach Nick Saban leaving for a job with the Miami Dolphins.
While LSU Athletic Director Skip Bertman and his staff waited by the telephone all day Thursday for any news from football coach Nick Saban, Bertman denied reports that LSU has offered to raise Saban's salary to nearly $4 million a year to keep him from leaving to become coach of the Miami Dolphins.
"Not true," Bertman said. "There's no truth to that at all."

Bertman said Saban called him at 5 p.m. Thursday and told Bertman he needed more time to make a decision. Bertman said Saban didn't give him a timetable.

"My feeling is Nick should get all the time he needs," Bertman said. "We have not put a timetable on it. I don't think that's fair."

Re: Bertman denies reports LSU upping ante to keep Saban

Dolphins position appealing
Former LSU graduate assistant Chris Landry, an NFL scout and consultant who worked for the Cleveland Browns when Nick Saban was a Cleveland assistant coach in the early 1990s, said the position of head coach of the Miami Dolphins has plenty of attraction to someone like Saban.

Re: Bertman denies reports LSU upping ante to keep Saban

Well if he does leave, the Tiger faithful don't need to look far for a coach. The OC has been sitting there and waiting on his shot at the head coaching job. He has turned down a few offers in the process. If Saban leaves, give the job to Jimbo!

welp, Saban is gonezo. ole Jimbo Fisher huh? an ole Auburn boy. will be interesting to see, but i doubt he will get the nodd. just can't see it. I would think LSU would bring in a hotshot outsider coach.

Butch Davis will be getting a call from LSU AD Skip Bertman, if he has not been called already. Davis and Saban have the same agent.
