Sanford tells newspaper he was in South America

Gov. Mark Sanford’s staff continued to tell the public Tuesday night that the governor was hiking along the Appalachian Trail even after a reporter greeted him at the Atlanta airport on his way home from a vacation in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Sanford told the State Media Company that he decided at the last minute to go to South America to recharge after a tough legislative session. He told his staff he might go hiking.

"But I said 'no' I wanted to do something exotic ... It's a great city," he said during an interview at the Hartsville-Jackson International Airport.

Sanford said he was alone on the trip and declined to give any additional details other than to say he drove along the coastline.

He told the reporter he didn’t know why his staff told reporters he was on the Appalachian Trail.

The Post and Courier e-mailed the governor's press secretary Joel Sawyer at 5:40 p.m. Tuesday and asked about a tip that the governor was in Aruba or Antigua.

Sawyer returned the e-mail and said the tip was wrong. When our reporter pressed him for more information about 8 p.m., Sawyer wrote: "My understanding is that he's on the (Appalachian Trail), or presumably on the way back at this point. ... We haven't said where on the AT he is because I don't know specifically.

"Also, as I indicated first thing this morning (go back and read the statement) the governor called in to his Chief of Staff first thing this morning."

Messages left by The Post and Courier for Sawyer this morning weren't immediately returned.

Sanford told The State reporter he left Thursday night from the Columbia Metropolitan Airport. Media reports said a State Law Enforcement Division SUV the governor drove that night was spotted in the airport's parking lot. Sanford said he decided not to return via the Columbia airport to avoid the media.

South Carolina will be waiting for the governor’s explanation today.

Republican Gov. Sanford admits extramarital affair

(CNN) -- South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford admitted Wednesday, amid speculation over his whereabouts for the last several days, that he has been engaged in an extramarital affair with an Argentinian woman.

"I've been unfaithful to my wife," Sanford told a news conference in Columbia, the state capital. "I developed a relationship with what started as a dear, dear friend from Argentina."

His voice choking at times, Sanford apologized to his wife and four sons, his staff and supporters, and said he would resign immediately as head of the Republican Governors Association. The affair was discovered five months ago, Sanford said.

The South Carolina governor had not been seen in public since June 18. When questioned, Sanford's staff had told media outlets that he was hiking in the Appalachian Trail. But Sanford was spotted Wednesday in Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

Sad story. I hope the Lt. Gov. is read to step up. He'll be resigning soon.
And I remember him on TJMS trying to convince the listeners why he was right in not taking the stimulus funds. Then all of sudden he couldn't hear the crew asking him questions. :smh:

The white girl behind her laughs, also, and the black girl on the right laughs once. Notice that they appear to do so after looking elsewhere, in the case of the white girl when she looks down. I'm thinking someone is texting them or they are texting each other.

Personally, I couldn't care less whether he resigns or not. But given where he comes from, I had to pick what he preached...

Yeah that blew my mine too, and the scary thing about it is there isn't any law to protect against it and doesn't seem to be any coming down the pipe no time soon

His wife doesn't care. She put him out over two weeks ago. She knew of the affair. He flew to Argentina to be with his lover over the Father's Day weekend...damn spending time with his kids. He admitted it yesterday to the world of his affair and less than three hours later his wife said that her husband deserved a second chance. :rolleyes:
 
I notice two thing when ole boy was speaking yesterday. He sounded like a man that had been P whipped reeeeal good and it also sounded to me like he was missing something at home.

I mean the dude said he had a serious conversation with his father-in-law about HIS daughter.

Wow!

I think it's safe to say he ain't never done anything like this before.
