French Open odds and picks 2018, women's singles: White-hot tennis expert fading Serena Williams

The 2018 Women's French Open gets underway this week on the clay courts of Roland Garros. Simona Halep is the Vegas favorite at 11-2, followed by Elina Svitolina at 8-1, Garbing Muguruza at 9-1 and Serena Williams at 10-1. In total, 11 players have 2018 French Open odds of 20-1 or shorter, so the title is truly up for grabs this year.

I do not expect the Williams Sisters to do much here. Clay is not their best surface. Serena has only won the French Open 2 maybe 3 times. I don't think Venus has ever won the French Open. I hope they prove me wrong.
 
I have low expectations as well for the reasons you mentioned, but Serena does not have much real match experience since having her baby. Its sad the WTA does not respect its players.

Serena Williams returns to tennis dressed like a superhero, and fans are freaking out

Serena Williams made her return to the Grand Slam circuit on Tuesday in the first round of the French Open. The 36-year-old hasn’t played in a major tennis tournament since winning the Australian Open in January 2017 — while pregnant with daughter Alexis Ohanian Jr.

About nine months since giving birth, she hit the court to take on Kristyna Pliskova, who’s from the Czech Republic and is currently ranked 70th (Williams, formerly No. 1, entered the French Open unseeded and is ranked 453rd in the world).

To do so, Williams suited up — quite literally. Usually one to make sartorial statements, the athlete opted for a black one-piece from Nike with a red stripe across her midriff.

The sisters dropped the first set before coming back to beat the 14th-seeded Japanese pairing of Shuko Aoyama and Miyu Kato 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in front of a Court 3 crowd that raucously supported the Americans.

The Williams-Williams duo last competed at a major tournament together at Wimbledon in 2016. They won their 14th Grand Slam title in women's doubles at the All England Club.

French Open 2018: Serena Williams battles past Ashleigh Barty

Serena Williams' Grand Slam return continued with a three-set comeback win over Australia's 17th seed Ashleigh Barty in the French Open second round.

Williams, 36, gave birth to daughter Olympia in September and has only played a handful of matches since.

The 23-time major champion faced a tough test against Barty.

Australian Barty, 22, took the first set, but Williams' rhythm improved as she fought back to win 3-6 6-3 6-4.

The American will meet 11th seed Julia Goerges in the last 32 after the German beat former French Open quarter-finalist Alison van Uytvanck of Belgium 7-5 7-6 (7-5).
