Ranking The SWAC Head Coaching Hires

Now that each of the open SWAC head football coaching vacancies have been filled, it’s time to attempt to make sense of it all. Of the four hires (Rick Comegy, Harold Jackson, James Spady and Broderick Fobbs) only two had previous head coaching experience at any level of college football prior to joining their respective schools, which should make for an interest 2014 season. So this begs the obvious question: Which school, before a game has been played, made the best hire?


4. Harold Jackson – Jackson State
Harold Jackson has the most overall football experience and knowledge of any coach in the conference. Jackson played more than a decade in the NFL and also was an assistant at the pro and collegiate levels as well.
However, he’s been out of the college game for six years and only had a pair of unimpressive brief stints as a head coach at the Division II level in the mid-90s. While Jackson might be privy to more X’s and O’s than anyone else in the SWAC, his age 68, might also be a hindrance since he is expected to win now and it doesn’t appear (with a three-year contract) that he will be in it for the long haul.

Also, Jackson was never a coach at the D2 level.

Jackson took over a 1-7 team that ended up 1-9. He was only an interim.

When he was at Benedict. He was only hired to start the program up. They were a club-level team. NOT division 2. He got them accepted into D2 and then he stepped away to go back to coaching 1-A ball.

that's the dumbest thing I have ever heard in a long time, if these coaches can't win on national signing day, they won't be able to build a winning program, APR issues occur when you try to build a team off transfers and junior college guys

For most of us, the real work happens after signing day. Some of our better players have come after NSD. You can pick up a lot of good players who fell thru the cracks, were asked to grayshirt, late qualifiers, etc. And of course transfers who leave after spring ball and JUCOs who didn't graduate until the summer.

APR issues occur when you don't hold on to the players you have.
 
I am interesting to see if Spady can make that Pistol work in the SWAC (and get the proper athletes to run it).

Yes. I remember his first year we signed 55 players - most never played a down for us and 90% were gone within 2 years. Something to remember Valley when Comegy signs that monster initial class.

Hell, cause he cut 40 of us. Some of us almost bought "I survived Rick Comegy" tshirts.

Naw. I am just a realist. Fobbs has no experience as a head coach or coordinator. He walked into a very ugly situation at Grambling. I believe that experience was needed at this point. I just hope and pray that he can coach. This has nothing to do with Doug. If we would have hired a proven winner as our coach for this year, I wouldn't have anything to say at this point. I have Fobbs under Jackson because the situation is worst.
