Actually computer rankings used a lot of different ways to come up with their numbers. Some use things like SOS, win/loss record, points scored, points scored on, polls, etc. The creator then put those he thought were important into a formula in which they created and then it spits out a number. Rankings are based on the opinions that they, the creator of the ranking, came up with. Giving strength to what they see fit and taking away from things that they don't see fit. It's all biased. Now, maybe yours don't use polls but some do.
That number does not say if Team A will compete with Team B or if one is better than the other. All it says is that Team A has a better schedule, a stronger conference, scored more than, got scored on less, or has a better ranking than Team B. None have any holding in a real game... They are just numbers. All Team A has to do is leave in their starters a little longer than Team B in blowouts and changed those rankings all together. Or, schedule the third or four best teams in a particular conference rather than the fifth best.
According to your beloved GPI, McNeese has a 30+ point differential from Grambling. I would tend to disagree. I would say they only have an 11 point difference but what do I know. I'm sure you believe that Harvard is the #11 team in the country and FAU is #12, too. It's laughable at best. Looks like Grambling would finish at the bottom of the Southland conference according to your lovely GPI. Thank God for Sam Houston State or we would be below their whole conference.
Or should we give your GPI more time to level out like those creators of the rankings like to say? I guess it will all even out as the season goes on, right? I could go through the whole thing and point out many ridiculous rankings but who has time.
