GRAMBLING - Grambling State quarterback Randy Hymes' performance in the Bayou Classic XXVIII earned the senior signal-caller national honors Monday.
Hymes threw for 330 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 78 yards and a score to lead Grambling to a 30-20 win over Southern in last Saturday's Classic, breaking an eight-game losing streak to the Jaguars.
Those efforts earned Hymes big-time accolades as he was named The Sports Network's I-AA Offensive Player of the Week, the Southwestern Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week and the GSU Offensive Player of the Week.
Senior strong safety Kalvin Pearson and senior cornerback Calvin Spears were named GSU Co-Defensive Players of the week for their play against Southern. Pearson led Grambling with eight tackles, including two quarterback sacks for 21 yards in losses while Spears added seven tackles, an interception and a pass breakup.
Freshman punter Marcus Yanez picked up GSU Special Teams Player of the Week honors after averaging 40.2 yards per punt on eight attempts with a long of 51 yards.
Another player earning notice from Grambling coach Doug Williams was senior receiver Levi Washington, The GSU Bayou Classic MVP in 1999 and 2000 turned in a third straight stellar performance against Southern with five catches for 128 yards and touchdowns of 20 and 49 yards.
"Levi is Mr. Bayou Classic," Williams said. "You don't have to worry about getting him fired up for that one. He's had a great year, but he always seems to turn it up a notch in New Orleans."
The Tigers, who moved up one spot to No. 7 in the Sports Network Division I-AA poll, aren't taking much time to celebrate the win over Southern as they've turned their attentions toward Saturday's 1 p.m. SWAC Championship game against Alabama State at Legion Field in Birmingham, Ala.
Grambling stands at 9-1 overall and 6-1 as SWAC West champions with the lone loss coming by the score of 45-38 at Alabama State on Nov. 3. The Hornets stand at 8-3 and 6-1.
"We'll have time to celebrate when we accomplished the goal we set for ourselves before the season started," Williams said. "We've made it to Birmingham, but we still have some business to take care of."
