Charles Edmond of radio station WPRL (Alcorn State) spent a little time to speak with SWAC commissioner Duer Sharp during the SWAC Basketball Tournament last week in Garland, Texas.

Among the topics discussed were the possible locations of the 2014 basketball tournament, the decision to move the conference baseball tournament to Fort Worth, TX, and of course, the possibilities of playing the SWAC championship football game someplace else other than Legend Field in Birmingham, AL.

A special thanks goes out to Charles for giving TSPNsports permission to republish his interview with the commissioner.

its not a bad laugh.

To me it simply proves that if you give an event like this time to grow it will. Duer mentioned in the interview that a city with a good night life is a key factor when considering various sites for championships. How much better can it get other than Dallas? I'm not crazy about Garland, but the facility where this tourney was held is not bad at all. It is more than appropriate for a mid-major tournament.

i had a ball in Dallas but you took the event away from the majority of your fans. Game must be centralized where all schools have less than a 5 hour drive. Night life shouldnt be important in a event like the basketball tournament.

I agree with you 100%. But Duer stated what the criteria is when searching for locations (pending the approval of the SCP). Dallas has nightlife. Attendance increased over the past 3 years it was held in Garland. He (Duer) is doing just about everything he can to copy the CIAA tournament...even to the point of hiring the same PR firm that manages the CIAA tournament. Moving it from location to location every 2 to 3 years isn't going to grow the event (IMO).

I totally agree you know yes maybe Garland was nice to us sure great but thats not where it should be. I'll say it again: this time not to myself.. If our championship games are not in one of the three New Orleans, Jackson, Shreveport the attendance will continue to be just what you see/get<<<<<<<<< fair
