What you say is definitely reality here, and I agree with you totally. However, my peeve is when Blacks expouse all this love for these white schools as if they are actually included. While in Baton Rouge, I came to the conclusion that Southern would never get the airtime as LSU. I was surprised that channel 2 even played the SWAC Championship game. For them, it was a gallant effort at community relations. Yet, after the game, and the subsequent BCF Champion was named, it was noted with little fanfare. But, according to my friends there, this past week was ridiculous. I was home for New Years and I saw it myself. Both local channels did their newscasts from outside the Superdome. All week. It was bananas. I talked with my mother last night and she said that there is no other news, but LSU football. I am so glad I'm not in Baton Rouge right now.

Dude face reality....LSU just won the national championship since 1958...that's all you are going to hear. LSU is, whether black folks like it or not, the top school in Louisiana in sports, especially football. We have at least 4 1-A schools and the only one making notice is LSU. Dude I'm telling yall.....Louisiana ain't got nothing on Arkansas.....man they sell Razorback ***** at the dayum rest stops...even when they are losing.

That's the same with LSU.....


I just wish for one time it would be a HBCU team that is SOOOO powerful that it could take any school in any bowl game.....

That's what the founders meant for our division to be..."the best"..
Although it's not, we have no one to blame but the black folks."PARENTS" that buy into the system.....

I been learn we are hurting ourselves....

If you all don't know it, you can get a GRADE A education from ANY HBCU school...

I learn this when I interviewwd for a job as an engineer and beat out 2 stundentt with 3.8 from Stanford, 1 from Prinston and another from OU (Oklahoma)....

If only our young BLACK atheletes can understand they are the ones DOING these PWC a favor......Then things will change....

The they make it seem as if they are doing our great atheletes a huge favor.....


Why do blacks go to PWCs?
Because they tell them they can get a great education

SHAT you can get a great education anywhere if you apply yourself

How much exciting do you think any of PWC games would be with those BLACK stars?


I guess our young kids look at it a a sure way of getting into the league.......

But if all that talent stays with in the HBCU programs, you better bet the scouts will on the SWAC and other HBCU games like white on rice....
 
Man it kills me when a black says their education was better at a PWCs.....dude I see so many black kids come to Arkansas and graduate with piss poor GPAs....especially athletes.....and then they can't even attend their alma maters for graduate school.

HBCUs are generally going to get the short end of the stick for a number of reasons - and particularly those that are unfortunate enough to not be located in a metropolitan area.

There are a number of reasons for that - not the least of which is the general perception that African Americans neither read nor subscribe to the newspapers, nor watch news/sports reports on TV.

Another reason to consider is some of our SIDs/ADs/coaches and their lack of media savvy. All of our folks need to take classes on what to say, when to say, and how to say. They need to be prepared to deal with the beat writer (or whomever is assigned) and try to establish a relationship with him/her. These folks can make or break your program - whether in print or on film.

Those of us who subscribe need to continuously let the publisher/editor know our feelings and if necessary, mount a campaign via your alumni and/or athletic assn. If your school advertises in the paper or on the station, ask them to consider running the ad elsewhere. Send letters, faxes, e-mails to the reader rep and the sports editor - as well as letters to the editor. This type of campaign needs to take place BEFORE something negative is written so the powers that be can't brush it off as reaction to a negative article.

Most of these folks only respond if there is some type of possible revenue loss - and while advertising is really what pays for the paper, you need subscribers to continue to charge exhorbitant ad rates.

I don't know what type of coverage SU get on a daily basis, but SU sure did get a lot of coverage when we played in BR in October 2003. We were in BR for two days and everytime we turned on the TV or picked up a paper nothing but SU playing the Dawgpound. On Sunday the sports page was covered with the win. The TV folks even talked about the band building.

Maybe you received all this coverage because the bamas are an exciting group.

Only the major universities are covered state wide in every State, but in our paper all the SWAC Schools are covered during the season on Sunday.

Man ya'll killin me with this, like someone stated earlier it's lsu face it, they are the flagship university and to be honest to hate on them because they love their school is simply wrong.

Now I'm old enough to have real reasons to hate on the system which has more to do with our state than it does lsu, but the facts remain that SU gets better coverage than "ANY" DI-AA school in the country let alone an hbcu.

How many of them do you know that has their own cable contract,coaches show (tv and radio) not to mention SU things sold in every wal-mart in the city and parts of the suburbs?

As long as they don't hinder us from getting ours more power to them and as for them showing the football game they did the same thing when they went to the Ncaa tourney in 93, so i see that as clearly them appreciating what our kids have gone through the last few years with all the injuries and bad breaks.

Come on guys i know confession is good for the soul but lighten up, you too PNeck. :D

New Orleans....You ain't going to SU no were in NO sporting goods store.......maybe a 2 different shirts around BAYOU time....

Don't get me wrong it ain't LSU fault...But at the same time by supporting LSU a great deal we are only making things worst..
 
I feel what everybody is saying and trust me i know SU gets no pub in the big easy until BC time.

At the same time is that even lsu alum's fault? I mean they are doing no more then we wish that we could do, granted the scales are slanted but like someone stated earlier maybe we need to get together as a group and go to the Fcc about it.

If we don't takes steps to correct the problem than do we really have a right to gripe? Just asking.

The biggest problem as I see it here in la. every other school thinks they're the next best thing to lsu and therefore the crab in the barrel syndrome is in full effect.

We've talk about for years how most of these schools didn't even want to play SU at their place let alone away now all of a sudden we're the in thing.

IMO if this would have been the attitude a long time ago a lot of these issues wouldn't exist, but they help perpetuate it with their arrogance and ignorance. Just my opinion.

As for the NOLA media... *sigh*

They are sporadic with their Tulane coverage. We had some great press in 1998 and 2002. After the review, we had some good coverage, and some press at the beginning of the season. But the Baton Rouge Advocate has had consistantly better coverage of Tulane than the T-P (appropriate initials). Now, if the T-P isn't going to consistantly cover the LOCAL teams, how can you expect them to cover teams from other cities in a lower classification? I'm not defending their lack of SU coverage (the Richie Weeks thing was deplorable, IMO), but I don't know what you're so surprised about. C'mon, we're talking about the same group of people who think that the Saints let the wrong QB leave when Delhomme signed with the Panthers...

The comments about the merits of attending the college of one's choice are extremely shortsighted, lack basis, and reek of what SEEMS like an inferiority complex. I would recommend not putting down others when trying to prop yourself up. Not every Black student or alum of an historically white school believes that education is "inferior" at HBCUs; in fact, that thought is usually not on their minds. The people whom I know made their choices for MANY reasons, and none of them was "HBCUs don't offer quality education". Some of it is financial, some is the desire to be in an urban (by "urban", I mean in the sociological, not music industry definition) setting or even the city itself, some of it is academic (certain degree program, etc), and other reasons. The point is that an oversimplified rant is not the best way to go in a discussion such as this one. It makes you come across as bitter and petty, and I know that you aren't that type; I've read to many of your posts to think that.
 
Should a person go to an HBCU just because they're black? I think not. The way I see it a school is a school, some have pluses, some have negatives. Question, being that i'm an engineering major and if I wanted to choose the best engineering school period, whether it be PWC or HBCU, which one should I choose...based on research, grad rates, alum ties, and job placement? And no, that isnt a rhetorical question. I've been to both PWC and HBCU, so I want to see where those of you who havent are coming from. Truth be told, in LaGrange you'll NEVER hear a guidance counselor and rarely a teacher to suggest you go to an HBCU. Hell damn near half of the class went to Auburn. I dont think the decision should be PWC/HBCU based, but I do agree that the assessment that PWC is automatically better than HBCU is incorrect. I did a semester of exchange @ Howard, and to tell you the truth i'd pick their school of business over Georgia State's anyday. However.....never would I ever pick their engineering school over GT's. The way I see it, its just gettin an education and I dont think it should even be looked at as white/black.

To state as "facts" that SU gets better coverage than "ANY" school in 1AA is crazy, if you havent researched the coverage that all schools in 1AA gets.

I'm sure you'll come back with your usual BS (that's how you are), but please don't pretend that you're aware of the coverage of all 1AA schools in the country.

speaking of growing up, you need to try it yourself. Maybe then, you wouldn't throw a temper tantrum ANY time somebody on this board disagrees with you.

I'll tell you this, SU has the best engineering program in the STATE of LOUISIANA.......

This SU engineering grad beat out some of the SUPPOSED best in the country for jobs, with technical job interviews....

I been to Stanford, I never thought them cat over cheat the way they did...Heck the teachers over there knows it, they give the same test (each class) they been giving since like 76....Of course all of the students know this......

The general student told me, he gaurantees if he make atleast 3 classes he'll come out with atleast an C.. And the rest of the group TOTALLY agreed......

That explains why an SU student of PV student can beat any of those kids out of jobs....

It ain't no games in these HBCU's when it comes to engineering...

But you will never catch them questioning Standford's engineering program...:rolleyes:
 
I know Champ's in Lake Forest Mall, and The Esplanade Mall carry SU stuff. Everytime I go there, there's plenty of SU, and GSU stuff on sale.

You just have to look around.

I agree with you on this. As a matter of fact to take it one step further, I would go to the French Quarters or Metairie to pick up an Advocate to read about S.U. back "in the day."

Man some of yall Southern people get on my dayum nerves with statements like this.....dude when was the last time SU won a 1-AA championship? With that in mind I'm sure if you went to Lake Charles this season you would have noticed all the pub McNeese gets; or for that matter go to the home state of the 1-AA champion this year.

Man yall act like SU created 1-AA football and honestly it makes a lot of people want to fugging throw up. Dude your school has not done anything that Jackson State, Grambling, and Alcorn has not done. The only thing the SWAC schools has not done is win a 1-AA championship which should be the focus of our football programs. Our schools are so dayum content with winning the SWAC crown and proclaiming that we are Black College Football Champions until we are limiting ourselves and being complacent. Yes our money is in the classics that we play, but dayum....how and when do we get the respect of top 1-AA programs. Grambling got respect by playing McNeese.....whether people like it or not. Southern was getting respect from me UNTIL your schedule last year. And really you get none from me this year, eventhough Grambling lost....the reason is simple....what did you prove to other 1-AA teams who are your counterparts? You prooved nothing.....you played NC A&T and two 2-AA teams. Yet, since you are the SWAC Champions and black college football champions you get a lot of pub.

I'll tell you this....go anywhere and mention Alcorn...the first thing someone is going to say...is Steve McNair.....mention Grambling....Doug Williams....Eddie Robinson....Tank Younger......mention Southern....you may get Aneous Williams...mention Mississippi Valley and you get Jerry Rice. Furthermore, does ANY coach from Southern have an award in his name to be awarded to a 1-A coach every year? No....yet yall brag on how large your program is and how it is the innovator of football....whatever.

SU you will be in a parade of champions with the NATIONAL CHAMPIONS.....face it...SU will be the red head step children of the event....

This tirade of yours is whatever. Eddie Robinson has an award in his name. Great. How many of the white coaches give a damn about it? Good for Grambling. Blah.

It's negroes like you that tap dance and beg for acceptance and rewards from the white man. Why should a Black school not want to win a Black championship? Why would a SWAC school not want to win their conference? What parade will Grambling be in on the 24th?
