Racism or not

Typical New Orleans sports coverage...

You would see all kind of footage from a Newman, West Monroe, or any other big name high school football game...

(SU could have spanked somebody and be on a 6 game winning streak) All you would see most of the time is the SCORE!!!!!!

The most you would get is a few shots of a few plays, not even big plays. for about 7 seconds tops.....

And now the story you have been waiting for!!!!!

A 5-8 LSU team....
A whole dayum documentary on what went wrong...What needs to be fixed for the next games.

Oh my lawd don't let LSU be winning, SU better not even think of getting no dayum air play here in New Orleans.....

Same with baseball!!! You have a RIckie Weeks that won the highest AWARD there is to win as a NCAA baseball player....NO DOCUMENTARY!!!!! NO COVER STORY!!!!!!!!

BUT LET THAT been someone from LSU....smh.....

SU beats LSU, or gives LSU a close game.....The media makes light of it.....smh

This ain't nothing but another SMALL form of racism....The funny thing most blacks don't even realize it.

GSU don't never get air time in New Orleans!!!!
If you are not clued into the TV you WILL MISSED the SCORE of an SU or GSU game....

Is this the same in other SWAC states, if so that isht makes me feel like we are slightly beneath second class citizens.....:(

They had some white man talking about "Everyone dreams of going to LSU. There's no other place in Louisiana to go" Or something to that effect. The ofays love them some LSU.

I guess they'll be stealing all of GSU and SU's highschool recruits this year.

Well, welcome to the club, my friend.

We had a thread similiar to this a year or so ago. I remember in 1993 the CBS affiliated showed every school that went to the NCAA tournament in Louisiana except S.U. Folks flooded that place with calls. I confronted the sports anchor person at a QB club meeting about the lack of S.U. coverage. The older Southernites did not like the way I treated our guess (snicker).
It is sad to say but the SWAC gets more coverage in Atlanta newspapers than in New Orleans during football season. It is very little but still more than N.O.

It's really a shame....

And just as many blacks praise these PWC's as blacks......

The coverage HBCU's get, is just what the MAN want's.. He wants the young black kids to feel like if you go to a HBCU you caught the short end of the stick.....

Question:

Do you really think the founders of the SWAC, MEAC, and so on and so forth entended for OUR atlethics to be looked at in such a way?

It seems like that is one fight us blacks will NEVER win.....

Seriously, I doubt those founders started the HBCU league so us BALCK kids can have a little fun.....When SU, TxSU, GSU, ASU players go out there and play they are athletes just like any other conference...

Hence what I am talking about is the exact reason Steve Mcnair didn't get a heisman....SMH

Tulane get too MUCH dayum coverage to say they loss so dayum much....

I would say Tulane had an argument if they were winning..

But ummmmmm SU and GSU is always doing the dayum thing..
GSU get NOTHING in New Orleans...

I do believe they are a state funded school as well....

96,

The Baton Rouge media does not have the same problem. The only thing I feel would make the broadcasting more balance in N.O. would be a concerted effort in contacting the FCC with complaints of imbalance in reporting and programming. I did confer with a few reputable AA legal minds and this was their perspective. The consensus was that these people dont understand anything unless you hit them in the pocketbook. These stations are suppose to serve the entire community. N.O. is somewhere in the neigborhood of 67% AA. Surely the numbers decrease when referring to the metropolitan area but there is still slanted coverage.

BTW,

I do not see the aformentioned happening.

Yeah, and the sad thing is SU and GSU brings waaaay more money to New Orleans than LSU ever does?

New Orleans are so much on LSU nutzs, how come LSU don't have a Classic game here in New Orleans to bring money to this city???

Even SU plays Tulane here in New Orleans, and brings money to this city...That game gets close to no play media wise here in New Orleans......

Just another way the MAN is making a statement some of US are to blind to see and to deaf to hear....

Finally a thread that relates to the frustration I was feeling as LSU was winning last night. All apologies to board members who luuuuuuuv them some SEC schools , but fugg LSU. It was getting a bit sickening to see all the SEC solidarity amongst Black folks, both on message boards and in general media.

Perhaps I'm just hopelessly racist, but I can't stand giving the 'good ole boys' in this region the satisfaction of winning national championships, when I know it's indirectly at the expense of our schools. Seeing all the talent Saban had amassed at LSU made me wanna :vomit:. And to be honest, my frustration isn't greatly based upon the talent disparity amongst the schools. (I resigned myself to the fact that 90% of top flight Black athletes are going to sign with these schools regardless. It's practically a lost cause at this point.) What really bothers me is this strengthening notion that such schools are inherently superior to our own-- particularly amongst young Black folks. I noticed that "Everyone dreams of going to LSU" comment as well, and felt myself clinch my fists. I only wish that half the Black kids hearing that comment didn't buy into that bullisht-- but I'm sure they did.

Memories are so short. :smh:

New Orleans is all about making a buck. The Business community at first was against LSU playing in the Championship game for fear that the local fans will not fill the hotel rooms. $$$$ talk. There are more LSU alums in top executives jobs in this city than any other school including Tulane. LSU is the flagship school in the state. We're getting more than we got when I was in school.

I'll tell you what's really sad. A few years ago I attended the FAMU vs Howard game at Howard. I sat among the Rattlers. I never seen so many radios in the stand, all they were interested in was the Florida State score. I could not believe what I was witnessing. I must be a racist also, because I care less about what is happening at Ole Miss or Miss State.

Truth be told before I graduated from HS I never even knew what an HBCU was lol. I've always loved goin to UGA, GT, and Auburn games though....does that make me a racist, nope.

This is why I love hot dogs, apple pie and Black College Sports. I love me some SWAC Sports. I don't need to worry about what LSU, Auburn, Alabama or any of the PWCs are doing. I just wish I could attend the Soul Bowl, Fish Bowl, Turkey Day Classic and the rest of the good black College football games. At one time we could make three BCF games in the same weekend. I can recall headed for one game and change our minds and attend another game.

One of OK players is majoring in University Studies. :D

You cannot practice racism unless you are in control.

Just had a great weekend by traveling to Jackson to see AAMU play basketball. We lost the game but we saw some outstanding play and had a great time at Pearl River Resort Casino (can't tell how much I left back there but it was great.)

Worse, still, is HBCU alums who steer their kids away from HBCU's to PWC's citing "better opportunities at those schools." School is what you make it: it if helps you to develop your skills and ability to think, then it has done its job.

Most of the black kids coming up now-a-days and even many black young adults have bought into the mass marketing persona that suggests that PWC systems are tailored for any and all students "regardless...............". That ain't necessary the case. Many also buy into the notion that if its one of "their" schools its better and if its one of "our" schools its inferior. That kind of self-hate, along with the belief by some that in order to show oneself as not being racist you must ignore and pretend racism does not exist, sickens me. Respect of oneself by demanding respect of oneself from others is the only creed America understands. Too many of our people violate this creed by their assumptions that black products and systems, and by default themselves, are automatically inferior.

Regards.

I feel the same way about Ole Miss and MSU. Don't leave out Southern Miss.

Also in my hometown, you would get sick and tired of the same ole top stories of Ole Miss, MSU, USM and even Delta State. These four teams can get their heads blown off and still get top story in the sports section. Let JSU beat the breaks off of someone, you would need a dayum magnifying glass to find the story.

Now in the Clarion-Ledger, JSU gets some kind of respect. I don't know if it is due to us being in the Capital City or what. But, I do feel sorry for Valley and Alcorn because they barely gets love until they play us.

I don't think it's so much racism as it is classism. This is a major reason I dislike LSU so much-no respect for other state schools from them or their fans.

As for ole boy saying, "I don't know why anybody would go anywhere else," that's kinda what I meant, although he is/was one of Clinton's right hand men.

trp96, welcome to the world of The Times Picayune. Sorry, but that's the bottom line. You'll get a SU article the day of the game, and the day after (thanks Nikki Bannister), but don't expect nothing more.

Not only do the Tulane folk complain, but look at what little coverage UNO gets during basketball, and baseball season, and what little coverage the other state schools get in the TP.

LSU has always been the papers poster child, and now that they've won a share of the national title, look for the coverage to get worse next year.

Until folk in New Orleans start voicing their displeasure with the paper, and stop buying it, don't expect much more.

Also, you never have to worry about LSU moving a game to New Orleans, let's be real here, they play in front of 90,000 + @ home, why would they move a game to New Orleans, when their stadium's capacity is bigger, and they can keep the money at home, and not to mention the tailgating.

Personally, I think it's just the TP way of doing business. They love their favorites. Case in point. Kordell Stewart was leading the Steelers into the AFC Championship game, and you know what story was the lead in the sports section the entire week leading up into that game, even though it was dayumed near a month later? Peyton Manning losing the Heisman Trophy to Charles Woodson, that's what.

Even though Kordell is a New Orleans child as well, Peyton dominated the paper for an entire month.

NICE

It's the same here in Arkansas with UAPB as well. Oh, when UAPB was going through those allegations in 1990 with Archie Cooley, UAPB was front page news. ESPN sent Cris Fowler during UAPB's homecoming in 1990 to do a report on the situation. When UAPB played in the 1995 NAIA championship, ESPN was not even there.

You got to realize where the people working at these media stations graduated from. Most of them graduated from PWC's.

Even BET and "Blackmen"magazine don't report on the SWAC and MEAC. They report on Black athletes that play at White schools. Are they racists.....no. But they just forgot where they came from and they are not conscious of the HBCU's. Being in the media is a very, very, very powerful position. For some sad reason, our people who work at those stations don't realize this.

Now Southern has the best coverage of any school in THE ADVOCATE. They should, being that Baton Rouge is over 66% Black.

Sad but true, I'll say this. Me a as black strong oppinionated man, I will do what I can to TRY and stir things in the right direction.

Although I am an SU alum, I hate the fact GSU get NO play in New Orleans......

In order for any inner-city kid to understand a piece of what I experienced in the HBCU world I have to show them a dayum SWAC BAND tape....

I made it my business to take 3 of the kids around my house to SU homecoming......From there they were SOLD, they now march for SU, and been there 2 years do excellent in school.

Can we all be honest here? I mean really can we?

The truth is that in the state of Louisiana, it is LSU......and then everybody else. We get poor coverage around the state as HBCU's and so do the other schools. No one gets covered like LSU in the state of LA, and to be honest coverage is dictated by readers and viewers, and LSU has a much larger fan base around the state than any other school. And if any of you disagree with that concept, then I know that you simply just want to start some bull corn. I am sure the same can be said for most other small colleges. I think many times we think and feel that the majority cares as much about HBCU sports as we do on this board, when we are the excption.....not the rule!

There are cases where we are slighted, such as the basketball issue discussed previously, that is a legit gripe, but because our sports teams don't command as much coverage as LSU is just the nature of the beast. It is as simple as supply and demand.
