Question regarding the Turkey Day Classic....

Not at all Beans. When I was a student I called it the same thing.

When an 18 or 19 year old witnesses alumni from BOTH Universities (your GRANDPARENTS age) HYPE as HELL wearing greek letters, laughing, drinking, fellowshiping, and illustrating the ultimate in school spirit, it makes you realize how special it is to them.

The TDC is unlike any other classic. Of course many students go home silly. It's Thanksgiving. The kids want to be with thier loved ones during the holidays. Because it's played on a major holiday...some of the kids are probably homesick. As said earlier, it's a smaller version of the Magic City Classic.....but has a more "personal" flava to it. That's why I could never attend the Bayou Classic as a student. It was always played the FOLLOWING saturday after Thanksgiving. By then I was hype about getting out of that band uniform and going to see my family.

And there it is.

Biff, most of the time, I didn't even get out my uniform......right after the DM's dismissed us, I threw my horn in the back seat of my car (it was already packed and parked at Crampton Bowl), threw da deuces, and got da fugg on up 85N to 280. :emlaugh:

Ok.....so Dahill tells you what SOME people he knows calls it that. You immediately assume he speaks for THOUSANDS? Come on mayne. See PsiSnake's reply. He basically sums it up in a nutshell.

Isnt that's how it's done on this board? I didnt know how the young folk look at this tradition and if he says that some students look at it like this, then should I presume that other young folk dont? We already having discussions on SWAC attendance on another thread and how some have been declining.

You are more likely going to see locals, in-state alums, and maybe a few out-of-state people who live within a couple of hours at the game. The rivalry is heated. State and Skegee are less than 50 miles away from each other.

The TDC seems to now be evolving into more than just homecoming for alumni. The city of Montgomery is becoming more involved than ever with the University's festivities. It has always served as an unofficial homecoming for Blacks who have moved away from the city. This game will have alumni from more than ASU an TU in the stands and at other events on campus and throughout the city. When I was a student The only TDC I missed was my freshman year. After I made my first one it has been hard for me to miss another one. My mom and sister can't seem to understand why I have to leave every Thanksgiving, but I tell them they can have as much of me as they can stand in 4 weeks. As for the comments made by Dahill; it sounds like something coming from someone who doesen't know the history of Thanksgiving and Black College Football and the importance that alumni serve to the university, but I guess that is to be expected from someone who is still twenty something:smh:. ASU and TU aren't the only schools and probally not the first HBCU's to participate in a Turkey Day Classic but we are the two that have kept the tradition alive.

I dont see it as a shame... but honestly... how many out of area college students are going to miss going home for Thanksgiving to go to a football game?

This type of thinking is why black football is in the state that its in....If you do your history some black high schools use to play on Thanksgiving on an annual basis...I believe Phillis Wheatley H.S. and Jack Yates H.S. in Houston use to play a Turkey Day Classic Football game on Thanksgiving...I blame 106 & Park and MTV ROOM RAIDER for all the ignorance the yungins have brought to all of our tradition!!

What???? When Yates and Wheatley fans, players, bandmembers got through playing on Thanksgiving they could go HOME and be with their families. Much different in college where most people are miles away from home. You cant compare the two situations.

ASU and Tuskegee players and band members sometimes go home after the game too. They still have three whole days to be with their families over the long holiday weekend.

The fact of the matter is DAHILL, that you simply don't understand the history and tradition behind
THE OLDEST BLACK COLLEGE FOOTBALL CLASSIC ON THE PLANET.

I have never attended this legendary Oldest Black HBCU classic. I will be there I hope next Thursday. I wanted to know for those that have been. What is the atmosphere like. What do i need to look out for....ETC

Now, back to 1SGT's question. Look out for the "Inaugural Hornet Walk", should be some great images to capture.

SENSELESS STATEMENT :retard:

.......dont understand why you and Scott gettin bent out of shape because of what DaHill said.

The key word in his statement was, "students and alumni he knows"; what, he'en suppose to say that. H ell there are Bama State alumni thats in MY circle that dont go/aint going; and the reason being is because of them rather celebrating Thanksgiving with their family. Now please believe that if they lived in Montgomery or in the vicinity, they'll be there.

Nobody has said that the TDC is bad; its far from that...I love the tradition, but I feel that yall need a regular homecoming so that more students can participate as well as those alumni that would come back when its not a holiday. Here in Atlanta; YEARS ago, Morris Brown and Clark played each other on Thanksgiving Day, and it too was labeled the TDC. The game was well attended mostly by a bunch of those schools alumni folks that lived in Atlanta.

And there are A&M folks in MY circle that don't go to A&M's homecoming. So what's the point?

Now please believe that if they lived in Montgomery or in the vicinity, they'll be there. The Turkey Day Classic draws people from all over the country. Both ASU and TU alumni come to this game from Detroit, Chicago, the West Coast, East Coast and everywhere in between. Some of you sound as though you're trying to make this like it just a local ASU and TU thing. Its not.

Nobody has said that the TDC is bad; its far from that...I love the tradition, but I feel that yall need a regular homecoming so that more students can participate as well as those alumni that would come back when its not a holiday. Cramton Bowl is packed with over 26,000 people every year. Dayum. Who is it that wants to come back that hasn't been able to come, and if they came where would they sit?

Here in Atlanta; YEARS ago, Morris Brown and Clark played each other on Thanksgiving Day, and it too was labeled the TDC. The game was well attended mostly by a bunch of those schools alumni folks that lived in Atlanta. Good for them. Too bad they don't play it anymore. But Bama State and Tuskegee still do, and we've been doing it since 1924.

:smh:

Come on folks stop being so sensitive. 18-20 year old kids do not think the same way 30-60 year old people think. Heck most of them think you are getting social security at 40 so what makes you think anything involving older people isn't going to get labeled old folks classic by them. Come on now stop acting brand new all the time. The TDC is special and no one is putting it down. Folks have their views and you can't do anything about it but keep it moving.

...I love the tradition, but I feel that yall need a regular homecoming so that more students can participate
I've heard that before and I think that was the thinking in moving some of the events to the week prior, labeling it student spirit week. Way back when I was in school, that wasnt the case, as I recall.
Now things kick off earlier, before students go on break.

And this year, theoretically, it should be even better, seeing that we're hosting Auburn in basketball on Friday night.

but beyond that, and just for the sake of conversation,

should the homecoming game be geared toward alumni or the students?

From someone with a 'Skegee perspective;

It's always a great time. Great atmosphere. For many Tuskegee people the TDC is like a second homecoming for us. For those of us who live out of state, it's a time to go back and get some more of the "Tuskegee Experience". I live in Detroit but my family is in Birmingham, and when I go home for Thanksgiving, going to the TDC is a must (like this year :D ).

The comraderie between fans of the 2 schools is great too. One of the best times I had at the game was in 2001 when my Dad mistakenly got us tickets on the ASU side. I sat there with the ASU folks and we talked smack the whole game. When it was over we wished each other happy thanksgiving and went on our separate ways.

WELL I HAVE BEEN ATTENDING THE TDC FOR THE LAST 11 YEARS ( I MARCHED IN IT FROM 96-99) AND I LOVE IT! AFTER I GO TO MOBILE FOR THE NIGHT THEN HEAD TO N.O FOR THE BAYOU. ITS THE LAST REAL WEEK OF BCF SO I BALL OUT OF CONTROL. I DID NOT KNOW THAT TDC WAS THAT BIG BEING IN THE BAND MY FIRST FOUR YEARS. BUT WHEN I GOT OUT THE BAND MY EYES OPENED. THE VENDORS, THE TAILGATING, THE SCHOOL SPIRIT, THE TAILGATING, THE FELLOWSHIP, THE TAILGATING, THE ATMOSPHERE, THE TAILGATING. IT IS A WONDERFUL EVENT.

One more thing.

A&M had 13,745 people at its homecoming. http://www.swac.org/swacftp/fbstats/2007/aamu.htm

Bama State always has between 22,000 and 27,000 people at our homecoming.

I really don't think you all are in any position to be giving advice to Bama State on what to do for homecoming.

Well as long as we keep beating Bama St for the classic we will celebrate it as our homecoming too. :emlaugh: Guess will have two in 08 also. :emlaugh:

.......I see where yo head is. You on this A&M -vs- State tip. Man gone somewhere with that isht. Aint nobody tryin to belittle the TDC, and I made it perfectly clear that wasnt the case.

Now look, I got sense enough to know that folks travel from all over the country to come to the TDC; but I also got sense to know that they aint the ones thats filling that stadium up; h ell your very own in this thread done admitted that. Besides I associate with enough State folks AND Montgomery natives to know the deal down there......not to mention my girl Bama State.

first of all, not sure if you have been to Crews... but EVERY games attendance numbers are off.. Our home side can be filled and they will say 12,000 (when our home side seats 16000) and students are NOT counted in attendance. Also there are over 20k outside the stadium tailgating. But like Snake said this isnt an AAMU vs ASU thing, so Im not sure why that even came up.

No, I'm not on an A&M vs State tip. If you had been from JSU or SU or whatever, I would have still made my same point. But you need to also know that folks coming from all over the country aren't the ones filling up A&M's stadium on YOUR homecoming either. Yall got 7,000 students, an on-campus stadium, and the game ISN'T ON A HOLIDAY. And our homecoming still draws twice what your's draws. This isn't to put down A&M's homecoming, but rather to show that the game being on Thanksgiving is a positive, not a negative. Having a four-day weekend during homecoming actually helps alumni who have to travel from long distances.
