PV vs. TSU outcome

The thing some of you fail to realize is that these band members fall under the jurisdiction of the band director. When the director says no, that's what goes. Period. Point blank. And, IMO, people re losing sight of that.

A true statement... FINALLY AN UNBIASED OPINION FROM A MEMBER OF A RIVAL BAND. Certain members of TSU are waiting from there props....Well there it is!!! As a "retired member," I felt as if the only difference from PV to TSU were sections. Individuals don't make the sections. People keep refering to Old Head Legends, but how well will a sectional battle go if only one person is playing. Save the individual battles for the parking lot and cameras. The level of playing from the entire section is what makes you better than your opponent. True, Kenny and Kevin(WHAT"S UP FRAT) are premier players, but that's all you hear. Bass drums.....word of advice.....balance within the bass section/entire section/band. "Better to be felt than heard"---Prof. Edwards. Cymbals...Pretty even. Tenors...I'd say they were even too. Quads/Quints/Sixes....TSU has always been a lot cleaner, but PV has always played more difficult stuff. I'm not downing TSU by any means, much respect goes out to sections who play more than 2's and 4's. But the entire level of playing in not even. Not by much, but not even. True, the BOX isn't murdering people like in the past, not because we're falling off, but because we set a standard that people are realizing. Just like computers....Microsoft is still the leader, but Apple is creeping up the ladder not far behind.

Dude, did u not read what I just wrote. Kenny and Kevin are far greater than the average snare player. But they also bring up the talent level each year. I wish I could prove to you BOX dudes that we not blowin steam when we say that we better than yall. All it takes is one run-in and its over.

well why this past weekend when my cb's (cliff and jose) told them boys to come through for a one on one they wasnt havin it?

I was at the game and the way I saw it was TSU and PV both did a great job. TSU had the edge on the field only because I had seen PV's show in Dallas. TSU did some of the same things they did in Grambling but the closet brought them through. In the stands, TSU had a raw brassy sound and PV had a more controled/rounded sound. It just depends on what you prefer. I myself prefer a more controled sounding band so I give the win to PV in the stands. It was nice as always to hear "All Blues" from PV in the stands. Both schools played good song selections in the stands which made for an interesting battle. Both bands should be proud of their performances!!!!! :nod: :nod: :nod: :nod:

SO WHATS MAKES YALL THE BEST? KENNY AND KEVIN? TO BE HONEST, KENNY WILL TELL YOU WHO WOULD WIN THE BATTLE. I WENT TO HIGH SCHOOL WITH KENNY, HIS SKILLS ARE NOT THE SAME. Now how can u say anything about one on one stuff when we came to ya'll house but the only person who would battle was Marcell? Come on now he's a veteran. And ya'll know we dug in ya'll arses at the game. And what happen to ya'll coming down this year. Daddy wouldn't get his foot off ya'll necks again I say. Or so ya'll say. So until ya'll go up against someone other than Grambling ya'll are consider in my and a lot of other people minds and hearts - that are not from the outside looking in- to be the sorriest in the swac. SO just for the record YES it is OFFICIAL the TRAIN IS TAKING OVER THE SWAC!!!!!!!! Whether it be becuase of Kevin and Kenny or GOD himself. It's Happening so get used to it cause we gone be holding the spot for a while.

:redhot: Alright, playa. Now you starting to get me hot. Especially with the statement that BOX only goes against Grampax's "Chocolate Blunder" every year. Is it me or is 2 years not that long ago? If I'm correct didn't we run through and face every percussion section but J-state back then? This includes football games, the Birmingham concert, and the SWAC Championship? And then back door for the first time at the Honda? Now, I know that the amount of exposure and matches we had that season does happen every year but Hershey's Blunder and Amtrak are not the only two sections BOx faces. Let's get it together, my fellow H-Town brother :tup:

Trombones and baritones over at PV, good job. I applaud y'all. Honestly, TSU trumpets were better. BOX, y'all didn't impress me as much as y'all did in '02 and '03. I will give you a thumbs up for it though.:tup: Tubas, TSU had the edge. Halftime, TSU took it. When Bun B was rapping on PV's side, nobody was really hyped up about it. He came rapping with Slim Thug on TSU's show just to, from what I believe, get some shine. I loved the arrangement of "All Blues". Very classy PV. Nowadays, you can't say who has a true W unless it is obvious like when the Ocean blew the living hell out of Alcorn. I will leave the dealings of Ws and Ls to y'all.

Good assesment. I agree with everything except the tubas. But it was a lot closer than BOTH sides will lead you to believe.

Thanks. It was kinda tight for the tubas. Only reason I said ocean tubas were better was because of their choice of songs. The Smooth Criminal was entertaining to hear from a tuba section alone. 14k did start some mess by playing the TSU Fight song. Besides that one "fanfare" 14k gave a good battle.

I found it kinda funny. I see how some could take offense, but oh well...That was the hardest section to call. I haven't heard the 14K sound like that in a while.
 
Why are you guys still harping on drums? Check out "If I Should Die Tonight" by Marvin Gaye. The drummer on the set gets the "hits", right, the accents, the transitions, embellishes the phrases within the song and even maintains consistent time and stays consistent with volume during creshendos and decreshendos. PV's drum section is more of a drum and bugle style section, yes. Funk Train is alot more similar to this cat on the set...well, it's supposed to be. (see Tenn St. for example) There are some really really good things going on at TSU in the Funk Train, with my most praise to the cymbals because they've got the show and the old-school style almost to a T. I honestly wasn't at the game but from what I can gather, a sectional battle would prove absolutely NOTHING. There's nothing to challenge on except maybe basses. You "drum-heads"...snicker.....I said drum-heads, tee hee.... are making fights over something unnecessary. And on 1 on 1 battles there really isn't much there either. Here's an example, I played "Blue Bells of Scotland" in High School on the trombone. It's a staple for an upper level trombone player but I don't remember it AT ALL. And if someone did and played it AT me in person it would make the crowd go "gosh", he's on point better than lilC. But I sight-read "Comfirmation" by Charlie Parker at 124bts, yeah....sight-read.....and played it good and got most of the accents right and even improv'd on it pretty sweetly. Again though, I don't remember it to play it by heart unless I'm in a combo or big band situation....dig? Same thing with drum cadences.....tomato tomahtow. Outside of rudiments you're all just a bunch of beating freaks.
