Props To SU and Tulane

For pulling this off. I think it's about time that one of Louisiana's D1 schools cross the divisional and racial lines to play SU or GSU.
This game makes a lot of sense and cents.

Tulane's attendance numbers are horrible! They realize that they need to boost their home attendance numbers. This game will be a tremendous draw. The only school that would bring more fans to the dome to play Tulane is LSU. The loyal fan support of the jags has made them a valuable draw.

I personally hope that this game tops the 60k mark and maybe spur both LSU and Tulane to schedule SU, GSU, LaTech, ULL, Northwestern, ULM on rotating basis. Instead of LSU opening up
with Utah State (and paying them $500k), that money could remain in La. It's time to make it happen.
 



LSU will never play any other school in the state but Tulane. Count SU and GSU out. It'll be a dumb move on our AD/Administration to consider it. Tiger stadium hold approx 93K those seats are full week in week out. Now where will of fan be to support the team, where will the band be. A game of that magitude in Baton Rouge against SU or Gsu every black person in the state will try and buy a ticket to. No sense of having our team on the field and the fans outside tuning in on the radio.

Never say never...old traditions and attitudes die hard, but they do die. As people become more practical in their thinking, as the economic benefit become obvious, as sensibilities and perceptions change, things happen that were once considered impossible.

It could happen. If not, well we've existed this long without it. But it is something that our AD's should explore. Let it be known that the schools within the state could help the state and each other by playing home and home for two years, move to another La team to play home and home for two years, and so on. If Tulane was smart, I would make The Big Easy Classic an annual game. I think SU will be the biggest draw it could possibly have, but that would not deter me from scheduling the teams on a rotating basis (ULL, LaTech, GSU, NWSt, McNeese, Nicholls, SU).
 
We'd probably get about 10,000 tickets for an SU-LSU game and the rest would have to be bought at LSU. I think SU could realistically have about 15,000 fans in the stadium.

But think of the media coverage it would bring to SU.

Also, consider the marketing aspect. You expose SU and the quality of your fans and program. SU fans would tailgate over at Tiger Stadium. When LSU is out of town, you might draw an additional 1000 fans over to your game. Eventually, SU needs a 35k stadium. There will be at least two games each season that LSU is off or out of town. LSU fans will learn that they can support both teams.

I agree with Mike on this one. With Saban as the coach and Bertman as the AD now, things will change at LSU. While Bertman was baseball coach, LSU played every in-state school on the Diamond except LA Tech. Saban has also talked about scheduling in-state schools on a rotating basis. Now I doubt that he will play SU or Gram, but I could see them playing ULL, ULM and Tulane on a rotating basis.

You are right on point Mike. Look at the relationship between LSU and SU on the baseball field. Now, when LSU is out of town during baseball season and SU is the only game in town, many Tiger fans will roll up to SU to watch the SU game.
 
MikeBigg, how many tickets does LSU offer their visitors from D-1AA schools? How many did Toolame get, although they didn't sell all their allotment. You would have to have a lottery for SU fans to purchase the limited amount of tickets available for that game. Any other way would start a riot. Not being negative, but the tickets alone would be a show stopper. Live broadcast on public TV or cable asset station will solve that problem. Peace.

With all respect, the number of tickets given to SU fans should not be significant. SU fans should be willing to sacrifice being in the stadium (in the numbers they usually have) in order for SU to play such a game for $500K. The AD's can make it a pay per view event throughout the State and split the revenue on an agreed upon amount.

Nothing but goodwill from such a game. Makes sense to me!
 
Playing Tulane makes sense financially and competitively. With the present state of our programs, it makes absolutely no sense to play the likes of LSU. Ask Billy Joe how he feels about taking his squad to Miami next year for the last time. After that game is over he will be saying "Free at last, Free at last, thank God Almighty...".
A multi-million dollar program will slaughter a one million dollar program 90% of the time. They recruit better player and more of them. They train in better facilities. This ain't baseball or basketball. We could have beat LSU's baseball team in many of our meetings. The hope was always there, and last year, it came to pass.

It just doesn't make sense to me. Think about it...
Does it make the team any better to be completely over matched? No. I personally think it sucks to go into a game with no hope of winning and seeking moral victories like "It wasn't a shut out." No offense to the Panthers, but it must suck to play or cheer for PV's football team.
Do you get positive recruiting exposure? Hmmm. Let's see. If LSU beats Southern like 85 - 7... No.
Is it financially beneficial? Sure, 500k would be a nice take-home check, but wouldn't you like to think that you could possibly win.
Can you get the same amount of financial benefit from playing another Classic? Yes.

Just my opinion.
 
That's always a concern, but remember you are playing them on occassion not every year. Also, SU and GSU has got to start looking at raising it's revenue beyond and in addition to what the BC generates.

Eventually, SU and GSU will have to be viable candidates for DivI status as a mid-major. We are experiencing tremendous popularity right now. With the right scheduling, we should be having 35k crowds at SU and 28k crowds at GSU. But it's gonna require building ourselves up to being able to get a home and home with other regional mid-majors. I don't see why SU couldn't consistently fill a 35k seat stadium against traditional SWAC opponents and some new local rivals. GSU can get by with a 25K-30K stadium because of the availability of 44k Independence Stadium in Shreveport. Look for GSU and SMU to renew their Shreveport battle in the near future.

FROM MY CONVERSATION WITH S. U. ATHLETIC DIRECTOR FLOYD KERR THE "BIG EASY CLASSIC" NAME RIGHTS BELONG TO SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY. THE FIRST TWO YEARS ARE SCHEDULED FOR S. U. AND TULANE GAME TO BE PLAYED IN THE DOME, SPLITING THE GATE 50/50. THEN AFTER THAT, IF TULANE AGREES THE GAMES WILL BE HOME AND HOME IN THE DOME ONE YEAR AND THEN AT SOUTHERN'S MUMFORD STADIUM THE NEXT. IF TULANE DON'T AGREE, THEN SOME OTHER SCHOOL WILL BE SCHEDULED TO REPLACE THEM.
 
Now that's some good isht. Way to go Kerr! I'm sure SU will prefer playing it in the dome each year. Especially if attendance stays around 50K.

I would keep the opponent Tulane...that way if the local Hotels try to inflate the price as a special event, every SU law school grad in the land should sue the isht out of them. They have always contended that Tulane games were not special events and therefore no rate hikes for Tulane and LSU.

Just a note: FAMU beat Miami the very first time they played. Of course that was before they became a powerhouse, but nevertheless FAMU won and took home a big pay check.

Maybe, just maybe LSU wouldn't SLAUGHTER Southern. The money sure would be great to have. Anyway, worth thinking about.
 



Kerr has vision

Look for the Big Easy Classic to move to the Labor Day weekend
at the end of the Tulane contract. Tulane may or may not be the opponent in the future.

Kerr plans to make the classic a kickoff event at the beginning of each season. If TU choses to discontinue participating look for teams with good following to be invited.

The goal is 50,000 attendance.
