Jackson State University President Ronald Mason Jr. wants to merge historically black colleges into one institution called Jacobs State University.

Sen. Alice Harden, D-Jackson, confirmed this evening that Jackson State University President Ronald_Mason Jr., approached her with an idea to downsize historically black colleges Alcorn University, Mississippi Valley State University and Jackson State University into specialized campuses united under the name Jacobs State University.

"He spoke to me about it, and I don't support it," said Harden, a Democrat from Jackson. "We need to do something, but this isn't it. I can't stand behind this."

I don't agree with Mason but I truly believe that he believes that this is really inevitable. He doesn't think that Valley will survive.

I knew Mason was gone hook up with the Prez some kinda way, especially since Eric Holder and Mason are very close buddies. Holder has always supported Mason, and I'm sure Holder put in a good word to the Prez.

Everyone seems to have a opinion about Mason and his views on merging but none of you all have come up with a viable idea to resolve the problems facing Valley, Alcorn and JSU or any of the other HBCU's.

I am 100% against any merger and will continue to fight against it. However I am very clear that if we (alumni and supports) don't come up with a viable plan to save our Universities we will be focused into a merger.
