President Barack Obama announced his intent on February 26 to appoint Jackson State University President Ronald Mason Jr. to the President’s Board of Advisors on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). Mason will be one of 11 members to serve on the board.

The Board of Advisors, created in 1981 by Executive Order, is tasked with advising the President and the Secretary of Education on methods, programs, and strategies to strengthen HBCUs. President Obama signed a new Executive Order on February 26 to re-establish the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities and the President’s Board of Advisors. According to the White House, the action signals the Administration’s commitment to assure increased access to federally-sponsored programs and opportunities for the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

I don't agree with Mason but I truly believe that he believes that this is really inevitable. He doesn't think that Valley will survive.

He was appointed to the board of advisors, so doesn't that mean he'll be advising the President? If he's trying to close down some HBCU's, then I'm sure he'll be advising that to President Obama as well....if so, this is NOT good news.

John Wilson is the Executive Director of the White House Initiative on HBCU's and he is on record as being against the mergers.

According to 13 of the southern states, no HBCU house is in order. They deal with us because they don't want the drama. When they get one of us to jump ship on the others, they rally behind close doors.

He may not have the power, but if he's on the board of advisors, so he certainly has influence...I don't think it's a good idea to have one of our own telling the President yet another way to try and get HBCUs doors closed. HBCUs have enough issues as it is.
