Essence planners say city lacked mobility

Festival fans hampered by sprawl, they say

Houston will have to address mobility problems that hampered Essence Music Festival fans before the city will be considered to host next year's event, organizers said Thursday.

"It was a difficult city to navigate and that can't be ignored," said Michelle Ebanks, president of Essence Communications Inc. "The end result was a general lack of systems to manage the sprawl. Houston underestimated the enormity and significance of this event."

Festival organizers said they heard numerous complaints from attendees related to the distance between hotels, shopping, downtown entertainment and Reliant Park, where the Essence Festival was held.

But Houston officials said the transportation hiccups that occurred during the three-day festival were the result of taking on the challenge of hosting the national event with less than a year to prepare.

Ebanks said organizers had suggested that free or subsidized shuttles be available to ferry attendees about town but that did not occur.

"Had the city or county invested more we could have had a different result. If a $126 million economic impact doesn't register there's nothing more that can be said," said Ebanks.

Jordy Tollet, president of the Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau, said his office did its best to address transportation concerns. He said providing continuous shuttle service for the far-flung hotel block would have been an expensive undertaking costing between $300,000 and $400,000.

Tollet said his office was able to provide other services such as getting the Metropolitan Transit Authority to extend its rail line service hours and asking cab companies to provide discounts.

He said the bureau promoted the festival in other cities at no charge to the festival organizers, placed the event on more than 100,000 visitor guides and area hotels offered visitors discounts.

"Everything Essence asked, we did it," Tollet said. "We did everything we normally do for a major event. This city knows how to put on a big event."

As with any large event, there will be some kinks, Tollet said. Since this was the city's first time hosting the popular international music festival, there were things to learn.

He added that the city had about seven months to prepare for the large-scale festival when generally they would know years in advance about an event.

While transportation was a major issue for attendees, Ebanks said many also complained that after the late night concerts ended there was nothing for them to do.

Bring it to Atlanta... so I can attend! :D
The GA Dome, the GWCC, Philips Arena and plenty hotels are ALL close together and within walking distance!

I really would like to see it back in the N.O, but Atlanta would be a better choice for the reasons you have just stated than Houston.

Birmingham would have done better than this. :shh:

I love the ATL but the ATL can't handle things like this. In New Orleans, the locals are down with the program. In ATL, the white folks will hamper the party. And if you want to talk about gridlock...you know in ATL, all people do is travel from downtown to Lenox to Buckhead. In New Orleans, people walk to everything.

Just bring it back home where it belongs.
Don't worry...it'll be back home, next year. Mayor Ray Nagin said the SUperdome will be ready, in September of this year.

The Essence Festival was "taylor made" for New Orleans, and sometimes when an event was taylor made for a certain city, it is difficult to move it to another city and replicate it.

There are a lot of "Houstons" and "Atlantas" in the world, but there's only one New Orleans.

The Esseence Festival will either have to undergo significant change to adapt to another city, or they'll have to do like cat daddy said, and take it "back home where it belongs".

Very true...also, the turn-out wasn't as well in Houston, either.

I agree. I hope it goes back to New Orleans soon!

I dont know about that...I saw a shat load of people compare to going to New Orleans for the past four years. I actually had fun. (and I didnt think that I would). I can understand the complaints, I am ready for it to go back to the N O!!

The turn-out, for the concerts didn't seem to be as large as N.O....there may have been folks hanging out, in Houston, but that reliant was empty, compared to the SUperdome.

bottom line Essence is about dollars......if N.O. is not ready they'll be glad to bid it out to a city with sprawl.

Folks knew the same problem with the Bayou Classic would occur with Essence...duh

^^
These types of Events are not made for change.....
New Orleans is the Best Place for these events to continue........

Somebody correct me if I am wrong...but Reliant holds more seats than the dome. I might be wrong though. Also, there is more space to walk in Reliant than in the dome. The dome corridors are tight and you almost always touch somebody when walking....If I'm wrong charge it to my head... ;)

It is better suited for New Orleans though. Steve Harvey (the host) even joked on it...that the hotels were far and there was no where to walk after the game...it aint no Bourbon St.

see i cant compare the concerts. I went sunday night and felt like reliant was packed....but i did see empty seats in the 600 level and I have never been to the concerts in New Orleans so i couldnt compare the two.

I thought the SUperdome was bigger than the Reliant, well seat wise....actually, I believe the entire dome is larger. People look like ants across from you, in the SUperdome, but in the Reliant, I can see everyone.

Reliant seats 71,000
Superdome seats 68,000

That's for football. I don't know how they declare a sell out for concerts in either arena.

Well, the turn out might have been similar then...I don't know how they account for the seats behind the stage though. Those were definitely not available for use just like in the dome... Thanks....

Many at festival say they would prefer New Orleans
Houston sprawl tops the list of venue complaints

-->The party's over.
And for many die-hard fans of the three-day Essence Music Festival, who made their first trek to Houston, they hope next July it will return to New Orleans...........http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/4022566.html

Not to knock NO..............but I doubt it will be ready for Essence next year. The Superdome is not the only thing to consider when you have over 200,000 people coming to your city for three days.

N O infrastructure is not ready to handle a large event yet.

As for Houston,

We screwed this big time base on YT! For those who was downtown that weekend. Did anyone notice a larger venue next to the Hilton empty?

Yep the Toyota Center! Wanna know why? Ask me and I will tell you!

First, I have a question. How often was the Toyota Center used?

I think that Reliant was made for football and not baseball. However, the Superdome was made to hold baseball as well as football games. Hence, in the seats in the Superdome are further away from the football sidelines than in Reliant. So people in the Superdome may look further away than they do in Reliant.

As someone stated there is the Georgia World Congress Center, Georgia Dome and Phillips Arena, which are nearby. Plus there is MARTA and the downtown hotels. But I would be concerned with the gridlook in the city.
