Minister Dies From Snakebite at Easter

JONESVILLE, Va. (AP) - A preacher bitten by a rattlesnake as he handled it during an Easter service at a rural church died after refusing medical treatment, authorities said.

The Rev. Dwayne Long died a day after being bitten on a finger during a service at his church, where members believe ritual serpent-handling is a form of obedience to God, said Sheriff Gary Parsons.

``We don't anticipate any charges,'' he said. ``That's their belief.''

No one attending the service at the Pentecostal church sought medical help, Parsons said. Members believe when people die from a snakebite during a service, it is a sign that it was their time to go.

I'm glad we don't have that practice in my CHURCH. The SIGHT of a SNAKE makes me almost pass out.

I was working in East TN and one of the ladies took me to this "gully" where Rattlesnake gather during breeding season. These were Timber Rattlers, some of them were over six foot long and the size of a Mason Jar.

I imagine that is what bit homeboy. One day folks are going to learn that you don not fool with snakes.

Snake handling is common in East TN., although it is against the law.

I know, but what do a Timber Rattler, know about faith, the scriptures or the "fool" that is handling him and that he is not suppose to inject venom because of my faith.

Anyone who has a little sense can see it. It's sad for people to die no matter what there name is nor what they believe except if it's the one and only truth of the Apostles.

I agree that it is sad for anyone to die. However, when a person intentionally handle one of the most aggressive and poisonous snakes in the US is stupid, how can you feel sorry for them, their family? yes, but not for the individual. the happen once in the bible, the Apostle Paul, did not deliberately pick up this viper. Paul was not tempting God.

?And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid [them] on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand?. Acts 28:3

When a person intentionally ?tempt God? My advice to anyone is not to deliberately pick up a rattlesnake, copperhead, water moccasin, coral snake or any other snake poison or non-poisons snake.
