"Mississippi Woman"
When we were young, some of our parents made us sit at the table until we ate everything on the plate. (Big ups to the Grandmas who emptied our plate when Mom wasn't looking)

Do you make your child eat everything on the plate? Is this wrong? What is your view?

I don't make Devin eat everything on his plate when I know he's full, but I do make him eat. Kids have a tendency to forget to eat when they're being consumed with playing. He doesn't have to clean his plate completely as long as he's eating and I know he's had enough.

Hellfire and Damnation are sitting at the table as we speak trying to finish their breakfast from Monday.

i am not a parent, but i have 5 lil ones w/ one on the way from my sis and a newborn from a bro. when i have them for periods of time, i know when they eat, so when they do eat (dinner) they clean the plate when there are veggies involved....gotta keep them healthy. especially if they want some sweets! and i am only 21.....doing pretty good hugh!

I don't have any kids but I know that if I do then I will not force them to clean their plates. :( This statement always makes me hot:( "Don't waste that food there are people starving.") I used to always wonder  if eat or don't eat the starving people aint gonna get it anyway. This practice to me breeds bad eating habits in the future. i.e. over eating. Why not encourage to get smaller portions and if they want more when they are finished then let them get it. That way you can minimize the wasting of food.

I never had a problem making mine eat. Looking back: My oldest
(daughter) was an average eater; My oldest son made me apply for a government grant; and my youngest was somewhat picky but had a good appetite...then again, maybe he was watching in shock/disbelief as his older brother worked his magic act (made food disappear).

My parents made me eat everything too, you know starving kids in Africa and all. The problem was that my folks weren't "portion conscious". Meaning giving a kid, a grown folks helping (except the chicken!) and expecting them to eat all those veggies was torture. I try to be more "portion conscious" with my son and he eat everything on the plate on his own. So, yes I want my child to eat reasonably but not with unreasonable goals.

My mom didn't have all that time to be talking about other folk starving in Africa. As far as I was concerned back then, I WAS in Africa.

I had to sit there and eat everything (although I did crunch up the cornbread to make it look like I had eaten it all). :D

If and/or when I have children, they will eat er'thing on dey plates, or they'll be sitting at the table, too.

My brother doesn't make his kids eat what's on their plates, and now they are so picky, you would need a chef to please them. They eat one or two veggies, don't drink milk, and they are the skinniest things around.

It'll catch up with them sooner or later, though. Let's hope they start eating more food before that food is discontinued. :(

I'm not a parent, but when I do become one, I'm not going to make my kids clean their plate. I think it's all in knowing your kids eating habits. You just have to know when they are full and when they are just saying they are.

Whooo! Good topic!

As a kid, my mother made me sit until I ate everything and I luckily did not turn out to be overweight. It kinda makes you appreciative that you have food at home to eat. My waist is small but I've got some hips (but the hips are hereditary) ANYWAYS~~>But I constantly think about eating, and I don't know if that's because of that. I don't think that children should be forced to eat everything on their plate, BUT I don't think they should waste food, because they will begin to make a habit of it and then get hungry later and want some McDonald's or something. When I throw away food now, I think about the people starving overseas and here in America, so I try not to overindulge in food (at a buffet) and waste food.

Growing up in a large family, everybody was on time. Better not turn your head because your chicken might come up missing. Everyone kept their eyes on their plate. Had to keep one eye opened during Grace. :D

Now that is one thing that my parents never made me do: clean my plate. I wouldn't do that to my kids either.
