Parent body-slams ref at high school basketball game

One thing that I can't stand is those "soccer moms" or those fathers that try to coach from the stands. I can't speak on where the mothers are coming from, but from the male standpoint it appears that a lot of these crazy fathers a) don't realize that their sons are not as good as they think they are or b)are trying to live vicariously through their sons(i.e. Father was an average or below-average player and now wants his son to do what he couldn't).

Girl, there is a reason I try to stay away from Kristin's and Corey's games ... hell, they talk about the coaches, the players, the refs ... that shat makes my blood BOIL 'til I'm ready to :uzi: ...

I can kind of see it in high school, where the stakes are higher, but City League THIRD graders?? :shame:

High school player's dad arrested for assault on official
Tuesday, February 10, 2004

By Mike White, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

A parent of a Hampton High School boys' basketball player has been arrested and charged with simple assault after allegedly attacking an official and slamming him onto the floor at a game Friday afternoon at Deer Lakes High School.

Peter Dukovich, 47, of Hampton, was also charged with assault on a sports official and disorderly conduct for his actions against official Ron Bell in the third quarter of the Hampton-Deer Lakes game. Bell was taken by ambulance to UPMC St. Margaret. Bell had a severe concussion and was released later Friday night.

Dukovich was taken to the Allegheny County Jail and released Sunday. His wife, Raelynn, also was cited for disorderly conduct for her part in the incident.

"We know there are nutso parents out there, but you never think something like this will happen to you," said Bell, 57, an official for 24 years.

According to West Deer Police Chief John Lape, the incident started after Dukovich's son, Tim, and a Deer Lakes player got into a fight on the court. Tim Dukovich is a 6-foot-3 junior forward for Hampton.

Lape said some fans came out of the stands. Peter Dukovich "picked [Bell] up and threw him onto the hardwood floor, with his back striking first and his head bouncing off the floor."

Lape said Dukovich is "about 6 feet 3, 300 pounds." Bell, a Scottdale resident, is 5-8, 170.

"No wonder I went flying around like I was a wash rag," Bell said. :lmao:

Bell said he believes he was unconscious for a short while after the incident.

"I never saw the guy coming," Bell said. "All I know is somebody came from behind and bear-hugged me. Then he flipped me right over his shoulder and I came down on the back of my head and my shoulder."

Bell was to see a doctor again yesterday.

"My neck is still all jammed and I still can't even move my right arm," Bell said.

Dukovich said he was "sick" about the incident. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Feb. 25 before West Deer District Justice Suzanne Blaschak.

But Dukovich also said the incident was not being portrayed accurately.

"It didn't happen the way they're saying it happened. I really can't say too much more than that," he said.

The game was played at 4 p.m. and the only fans allowed to attend were parents, grandparents and school officials. The Deer Lakes at Hampton game earlier this year was played under the same conditions because of fights among students of both schools at a Hampton-Deer Lakes game last year.

According to the police report, the fight between Tim Dukovich and a Deer Lakes player started in the third quarter. Lape said RaeLynn Dukovich was swearing at one of the officials. Besides Bell, the other two officials were Rick McKernan and Paul Tatarko.

RaeLynn Dukovich was asked to leave the gymnasium three times.

"An officer physically had to remove her," Lape said. "As this was going on, [Peter Dukovich] came down onto the court, onto the floor and picked up the referee [Bell]."

Bell said, "I was blowing my whistle, trying to get the players to stop fighting when somebody came from behind."

The WPIAL has asked Hampton and Deer Lakes to investigate the incident and file reports with the league office. Hampton said it was gathering information from witnesses.

"We've had incidents before where there has been bumping, pushing, shoving, jostling and yelling. But I don't think we've ever had anything that's risen to this level where someone goes to the hospital," said WPIAL executive director Larry Hanley

After the incident, the game was suspended with Hampton leading. Deer Lakes coach Kevin Smetak said it won't be finished and will count as no game.

Ain't nuthin' like a spicy woman with a big booty.

You' shole is right bout that

but chocolate, don't take it overboard with all that loud, vulgar, out of place cussing.

A little feisty is a good thing. :licky:

but all that loud, unnecessary, cussing "my child aint never did nothing wrong" stuff aint all that good. :(

In a nutshell: He should never have touched her. Gotten the police maybe, but never no "official" should have put his hands on her. It would make me snap too.

By the way, I don't cuss all the time. Just when needed. Promise.:D

Well tell us what really happened, DUKOVICH.

He didn't touch her he asked her to leave. She should have left. I hope he sues him for everything he has even the goldfish!!!

It is easy to get worked up over a game...I see it happen all the time. Especially when YOUR children are involved.

The ref did not touch her though. If her husband wanted to touch someone it should have been the cops!!!

It doesn't matter whether it's a father or mother they're both parents and they should act accordingly.

Theres isn't any one that get's on the officials any worst than I (BASKETBALL) but taking it to the point where your using foul lanquage in public like that is freakin ridiculous.

These would be the same parents wanting to run a coach out of town if he's rumor to have done something improper base on the fact they're suppose to set an example.

Btw in case some of you WWF parents have forgotten, using vulgar lanquage in public is against the law and they have every right to knock you in the head with a damn nite stick.

You know, from my experience of coaching kids, I know that refs have feelings an if you, your players, or your fans start to haggle the refs, he's gone make it worse on you.

Its easy for parents/fans to sit in the stands be critical of a coach, player and/or ref. It is my belief that most parents bring their kids to practice and to the games and EXPECT their kids to be the best on the court/field. They usually don't work with them at home, don't put them in camps or anything.

I never GO OFF on a ref, no matter the circumstances. I feel those kids look up to me and I rather keep my cool. My kids tell me every game, "Coach, they fouling me and the ref won't call it". I simply say, "Play thru it, you won't get every call".

I think if most parents would go see those tapes on how a parent is not to act, (4 hour course/video), we wouldn't have these problems.

That's the way it should be. Whiny arse parents produce whiny arse kids, so when the parents are in the stands bytching and moaning about a bad call or a no call it only passes down to the child. The next thing you know, you have teams full of "superbrats" running around. These kids need to learn that everything will not go their way either on the court, in the field, or in life in general and they can't just throw a bytch fit everytime something happens.

:uzi:

I will tell you this.....if that was my husband that man slammed by now there would be some "Slow Walking" and "Sad Singing" in preparation of someone's "Home Going Celebration". Parents need to stop......................I bring my camera and take pictures which allows me to keep my mouth shut.

I went to my son's game back in January.....they were calling his name so much in a game I made sure I kept my lips zipped. I asked my son how he felt about his name being called so much and he said I "really" get tired of it to the point I just tune it out. I have always told my son and daughter whatever the sport, they are playing against the "Refs" and the other team. Play your game to to best of your ability and don't worry about the rest. My husband said "Little League BaseballL" is the worst to officiate, and he will not do it. Him, the official but a parent in the stands has been put out the park but he knew the game and the official did not.

Y'all pray for me too.

I was recently permanently ousted from a Church gymnasium for using foul and obscene language. I lost it (again)... :shame: I won't repeat it for God doesn't like ugly and I was preaching an ugly sermon up in thur. :smh:

I try my best not to attend my daughter's bball game or her baseball games. I get too worked up w/ her if I feel that she isn't giving her all. :( I literally have to grit my teeth. :(

Like I said before, "I don't care what they say about me."

I feel like I'm teaching my kid to stand up for what's correct. I can't lie down. And by the way, I yell WHENEVER the ref makes the bad call, whether my child or not. It a TEAM thing.
:D

Y'all probably wouldn't believe me if I told you I got the TEAM SPIRIT award voted on by the parents, would you? And no, it wasn't a black thang. My kid was only one of two blacks on the team.

Guess we 'tolerate' more down here or maybe everybody acts like me.

Where you @ gul so I know not to sit next to you while you gettin' all worked up and all. lol

Seriously, there's a way to say it w/out becoming offensive. Cursing isn't the thing to do. There are very impressionable kids looking at you and looking up to you. Take a thesaurus w/ you and slam those big educated words on'em. That'll scare the "L" outta' certain refs. lol

We all get worked up. There's just a "good" and tasteful way to get your point across w/out vulgarity.

I guess we are blessed this year. We have a ref in our league that does our games every Saturday and he is about 60+ years old. He really has that 'Grandpa" personna. We call him "Pops" (he's an old white man).

He calls a perfect game. The other ref is a yound 20 something old white boy that does a good job.

My daughter has meet majority of her friends via these youth sports. Each Saturday her and her friends try to see who is going to host the SLEEP OVER. Its really no use getting worked up over the game when all the kids want to do is COMPETE and COMPLETE. They could care less about a missed or bad call. All they want to do is play hard and hope to go over their friends house after the game.
