Parent body-slams ref at high school basketball game

Tuesday, February 10, 2004
PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania (AP) -- A parent body-slammed a high school referee after he ordered the man's wife out of the gym for allegedly yelling obscenities during a basketball game.

The referee, Ronald Bell, 57, was treated at a hospital for a concussion and released after the attack Friday night.

Peter J. Dukovich, 47, was charged with simple assault, assault on a sports official and disorderly conduct. His wife, RaeLynn, who claimed the ref was making bad calls, was cited for disorderly conduct.

After Bell asked security to escort the woman out of the gym, "her husband came down onto the court, picked up the official, threw him on the ground with his back striking first and then his head hit the floor," West Deer Township police Chief Jon Lape said.

Officials say the rivalry between suburban Deer Lakes and Hampton high schools prompted administrators to allow only parents and grandparents to attend the game.

"We have parents who are supposed to be role models but instead we have problems occurring with parents fighting," Lape said.

Dukovich declined to comment Monday.

Can rivals be this serious? Well, I can think of that Bulldog and Hornet incident.............................oh well.

As a Sports Mom that loves to yell at officials (including obscenities), I will say that in the heat of the moment, you sometimes lose your mind, especially when its my baby at bat/fouled/tackled, etc.

In my opinion, I think the referees are acting like punks--can't take criticism, think they run the stands, want to censor parents, etc. Not saying that I actually would have tackled the referee but I dayum sure have wanted to.

They get outta hand....! The worst part is that the children aren't seeing good examples of being a good sport if their dog gone parents are out there actin stupid...:splat:

Take a deep breath Topaz. :D

You ask me the man got off easy by being body-slammed. Least he's still breathing unlike that other incident that happend when a father got pissed.

Did I mention that they tried to throw me and my husband out of a game too? Referee actually had the balls to stop the game and come off the field to say something to us. Bad move. Thought they were gonna call the cops. My ex cussed him every which way but loose and i did my job and echoed each sentiment plus some. But the ref was flubbing up bad. Everybody was complaining, just didn't have the guts to say anything.

The Ballpark manager came over and spoke with us and we spoke right back. Eventually, he asked us to not shout, just talk when telling the punk azz referee something and took his other race behind on. The referee quit after that game.

Chick, at the moment that I'm clenching the fence and cussing for all I'm worth, I'm actually thinking that I'm showing my kid how to stand up for himself where there is OBVIOUS injustice. Not the best example, but that's what my adrenaline crazed mind is telling me at that moment.

Yes, I'm breathing deeply and working on this little mental sitchiation. :) Pray for me.

Are you talking about the time one parent beat another parent to death? I think their boys were playing hockey, right?

Most people on this board will not tell you this but you and your ex should have been kicked out of the event and banned from the games for the rest of the year. I'm sure you aren't the only parents out there who does not agree with the refs. Can you imagine how embarrased your child will be whenever you attend his games from now on. I know the other kids are laughing like crazy about this. The only thing you are showing your kid is how to make an ass of yourself. Most of these refs aren't professionals and they do make mistakes just like your child makes mistakes when he/she is playing. If there are no refs then there are no games. If there are no loud mouth parents everybody is happy and enjoys the game.

I wasn't directing that comment towards you...There IS a difference between saying,"C'mon Ref!, *&@*%^!!#!" and jumpin' outta the stands puttin your hands on em'...In the end, it just a game...:p They just wanna ensure the children are learning to be good sports...:p

damn chocolate topaz

From now on, maybe you just need to stay at home and bake some cookies and wait for the game to end.
:(

but I aint gon lie, if you go to any game, you'll hear all kind of cussing and threats coming from the stands.

Say what you want 'cause opinions are like azzes, everybody's got one.

Refs should EXPECT harrassment. If you can't take the dayum heat then step the f*** up off the plate/field/court, etc. Don't whine like babies and try to act like the park manager is my Daddy, cause he ain't.

Don't give a dayum what the other kids thought 'cause their parents gave us high fives when the schitt was over.

Can't ban us because we very verbally abusive but not physically abusive AND we PAID to have our kid play in this league.

And if there are no loud mouth parents, there is no need for a ref to "be on his toes" and bad calls will proliferate.

Freedom of speech is a beautiful thing.

Nope, not still married. Most sides covered right now.;)

Just for the record, my child is pretty mild mannered about the whole thing. He also stands up for himself at 13 against children as well as adults. He doesn't make excuses for them, he lets them answer for themselves.

Also, I don't come to the games ready to fight. I just am willing to fight when the need arises. There is a difference. There is just as much poor sportsmanship in a ref throwing a game and making bad calls as a child trying to kill another child.

L, I just think i spice things up.:D

LL13,

High 5's -Don't know, don't care cause that ain't the way it went down.

Not worried about it biting me, 'cause I've got a BIG booty.:D

YOU DUN SED SOMETHING RIGHT THERE!

However, one of the reasons I stay away from Kristin's games is because I can't abide by the behavior of some parents. That **** pisses me off. You might not be shame, CT, and neither might your son, and you might even be right ... but that voice you hear saying, "DAMN!! IT'S A GAME!! SHUT THA FUGG UP!!!"

That's me! :D
