I just arrived back home from Cincinnati watching the Gram vs. Bethune game. All I have to say is look out Swac!!! Here comes Grambling. Here's the breakdown:

1st Half: Both bands were pretty hype in da stands. Bethune opened up with their traditional Lets Go Wildcats. :ebrow: Then Grambling responded a little later with Neck :ebrow: The first half was pretty much a toss up, however Gram did play 400 Degrees.

Halftime: Bethune had an excellent sound on the field. They were balanced and clean. When they played Alicia Keys' If I Aint Got You, it brought tears to my eyes!!!!!!     This song was the highlight of their show. THe rest was pretty boring.

Although Bethune had the better sound on the field, Gram had a more entertaining show overall. They were actually marching!! They also got a better crowd response. I'd give halftime to Gram hands down.

2nd Half: The third quater was kinda a rest quarter, although a few fanfares were played at the end. Here are the winners:
Trumpets: Bethune    (Grams trumpets were nice too but Bethune was off da chain!!!!!!!!!!!)
Trombones: Slight edge to Bethune because Gram had some cut off problems
Mellos: Gram
Baritones: Bethune (although Bethune didn't play a fanfare they were the better sounding section)
Tubas: toss up
Saxes: Gram please tell your saxes to sit down and be woodwinds!!!!!

During the 4th Quarter Gram played ESPN. Oh my goodness!!!!!!    I must admit, Gram is bigger and they got power!!!!!!!!!!!

Overall Bethune was the more musical band but Gram won the power category. Both bands sounded good. Look out swac, if Gram gets a book and continues to improve, its gonna be a long year. This game was a toss up but if I had to crown a winner I would say Gram based on halftime.

MTCx85 from the 5th Q.
I have never seen either band perform before, so these are completely unbiased comments. I sat on the 45ish so I was in the middle, so I had equal range from both bands. These are my OPINIONS, not what others may think so they can post their own thoughts.

1st Quarter

Bethune-Cookman
I couldn?t hear their first song because they were playing some crap song over the load speakers, but it had well pronounced tubas with nice balance within the section. Trumpets had slight difficulty matching the bands balance.

Grambling State
Spent the first half of the quarter rearranging the tubas. They stood up once, but sat right back down when they got scored on.

Bethune-Cookman
?Lay Low? ? Nice trumpet sound and trombones had a nice counter melody.

Grambling State
?Neck? ? Shortened due to a fumble. Their first song of the day and it had a very good bass line accented with a nice tuba sound. Compared to BCC, their tubas didn?t have as good a tone. Mellophones seemed weaker than the band?s volume.

Grambling State
?We Ready? ? Tubas had a very good intro. The solo tuba had a nice range and didn?t struggle with tone in the high range. The other tubas had some poor technique unless it was for effect.

Bethune-Cookman
?Neck? ? Fuller band sound than Grambling State. Good bass line.

Grambling State
Starts playing something while BCC is playing, but I couldn?t tell what it was because BCC was a hell of a lot louder.

2nd Quarter

Bethune-Cookman
They continue playing ?Neck,? which is filled with nice strong trombones and baritones.

Grambling State
Lucky for them, BCC stops playing and we can hear Grambling State. They had a nice mellophone and trumpet chord thing going on. The mellophones also had this nice punch in between the chord changes.

Bethune-Cookman
I didn?t know the name of the song they played, but it sounded pretty dayum good. BCC has a very nice overall sound. It didn?t last too long because Grambling was about to take a snap.

Halftime (I really didn?t take notes from this, but I wrote down some general things.)

Bethune-Cookman
Solid trombone sound. Mellophones wail. Nice crescendos by the whole band during ?If I Ain?t Got You.? Also, I noticed a small phasing issue from the trombones and baritones. It cleaned up in a couple measures. Tubas offer a solid background in no matter what they played. Baritones have very nice tone in ?In The Stone.?

J-Kwon came on and started singing ?Tipsy? while running around the field.

Grambling State
They were more entertaining than BCC on the field. They may not be as loud or as clean as BCC, but they sure got more crowd appeal. I liked it when the Grambling State directors got on the field and started dancing to some R. Kelly. Their show had more movement around the field.

3rd Quarter

Grambling State
The mellophones play a fanfare, ?Imperial March? from Star Wars. It was pretty weak because I heard some wrong notes when they took it up, BCC does nothing in return. Grambling State plays another fanfare, which sounded a whole lot better; although, the upper part sometimes becomes engulfed by the lower.

Bethune-Cookman
They play ?Big Ballin.? There was some nice trombone articulation during the intro. During a play on the field, you can hear the piccolos. Grambling State starts playing during this, but you can?t hear them over BCC?s tubas roaring. They have a beautiful mellophone sound.

Grambling State
After scoring, they start playing ?ESPN.? The trombones overpowered the tubas for most of the song. Trumpets die off at the end of phrases and the mellophones just take over the whole band. This turns out to be a challenge towards BCC. No response, so they play some punches of ?ESPN? after every play.

Grambling State
The mellophones try again, but no reply. So they whole band gets up and plays ?Jesus Walks.? Sounds like some phrasing issues, but overall nice trombone sound.

Bethune-Cookman
They reply with ?Hay.? This interrupts GSU and overtakes them volume wise. Some problems with the trumpet sound being heard over the band. I don?t like their arrangement as much as NC A&T?s.

4th Quarter

Grambling State
Mellophones challenge once again, but still no response.

Bethune-Cookman
They whole band replies, but I don?t know the name of the song. They score during this song so they start playing the ?Fox Football Theme? then some other song that I?ve never heard before.

Bethune-Cookman
The tubas play a fanfare. They had a nice sound that was very energetic and projected throughout the stadium.

Grambling State
The tubas responded. They had a nice lower register sound and had a uniform section style. It sounded a little more ?complete? than BCC?s fanfare.

Grambling State
The saxophones play a fanfare. I couldn?t hear it from where I was sitting because the BCC cheerleaders were louder than them?

Grambling State
Trumpets play a fanfare that a nice powerful sound that was balanced and loud.

Bethune-Cookman
The trombones started playing some fanfares. They played three different ones before they gave GSU a chance to reply. I like how you could hear all the different lines when they played.

Grambling State
They respond, but the counter melody was stronger than the melody.

Bethune-Cookman
The trumpets finally reply to the earlier challenge. It wasn?t as good as GSU?s. GSU produced more volume from a smaller section; although, BCC used more ?notes? in their fanfare.

Grambling State
The trombones play three different fanfares again. They sounded deeper than BCC, but same as with the trumpets, they use less notes, persay.

Grambling State
?Neck.? Again? I?m sorry, but the same song twice during a game is lame unless it?s a fight song or being challenged.

Bethune-Cookman
They start playing something, but I didn?t really get a good sense of it because it conflicted with GSU?s ?Neck.? It started off with some chords and you could once again hear piccolos when they soften for plays.

Grambling State
They almost lose the game for their team. BCC has 3rd and 11 from their own 16 or so. Grambling is blasting something and the refs flag them for unsportsmanlike conduct and give BCC automatic first down with 4 minutes to go and Grambling down by 2. Grambling didn?t play for the rest of the game because of this. They just sat there.

Bethune-Cookman
They were going wild in the stands until they lost.

Grambling State
They kick a field goal with 9 seconds left to win 24-23.

After the game:

Concert by Twista and Ludacris. Ludacris gets a group hug from the entire BCC cheerleader squad in the middle of singing ?Stand Up.? They cut of his mic from some reason before he is done with his last song.

Battle of the Bands:

Grambling State took their win from halftime and left early. I guess they need to head home for that 18-hour bus ride. Bethune-Cookman gets the win at the BOTB because they were the only band, but it was the same show as Defeat the Beat.

Results:

Grambling takes halftime only because it got more crowd appeal. They weren?t as loud as BCC or had as good musicianship, but they got their groove on. Section battle are as follows:

Trumpets: Draw on fanfares, but BCC?s were screamin? during halftime and BOTB.
Mellophones: Grambling
Trombones: Bethune-Cookman
Baritones: Bethune-Cookman
Tubas: I like GSU?s fanfares better, but BCC had overall better performance.

BOTH BANDS DID GOOD, BUT GRAM WAS ON THERE GAME MORE. BETHUNE ACTED LIKE THEY WERE PLAYING IN THE DAMN CONCERT HALL AND GRAM CAME WITH IT ON THEIR MIND. BETHUNES BAND SOUNDED GOOD BUT NO MACH FOR GRAMS' POWER, I'M SO USED TO THE SWAC SOUND AND THE MEAC JUST DOESN'T DO IT FOR ME. HALFTIME WASN'T EVEN A CONTEST GSU HAD THE CROWD FROM START TO FINISH. IF GSU KEEPS THIS UP WHEW IT'S GONNA BE A FIRE ARSE YEAR IN THE SWAC. BETHUNE IS HIGHLY OVERRATED. I EXPECTED MORE.

I think that both bands did an good job...

BCC--ALthough they were not as entertaining as they normally are,but their show was basically flawless and their sound was very powerful and balanced as usual! Considering the fact that they have had limited practices this season b/c their school has been closed for most of the season due to hurricanes, they did a good job....I wouldn't say that they are overrated because I see them often and I know what they are capable of!

Grambling--was a huge suprise for me and most people who are use to seeing them! Not because they were that great, but when you don't expect much from a band from the jump, you get a little shock factor once they exceed your expectation by a hair. Grambling was loud (they beefed up on the brass), but they didn't sound good! From an entertainment standpoint their halftime show was better...they did a good job of giving the crowd what they wanted. I think that they will continue to exceed other bands expectations in the SWAC when they face off!

OK FOR ONE THING YOU ARE SO WHOPSIDED. GRAM WILL EXCEED OTHER BANDS EXPECTATIONS IN THE SWAC BUT THEY DIDN'T SOUND GOOD.

GRAM SOUNDED GOOD SO KEEP THAT MEAC BULLSHAT TO YOURSELF. BCC WAS BORING, I KNOW THEY HAD LIMITED TIME TO GET THINGS TOGETHER. I HOPE THAT WASN'T A PREVIOUS SHOW THEY PERFORMED BECAUSE THAT WAS BUDDY LOL I HATE TO SAY IT. IF GSU HAD ONE DAY TO PREPARE THEY STILL WOULD HAD OUT PERFORMED BCC. DON'T GET ON HERE LIKE BCC WAS SO POWERFUL BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT, MANY PEOPLE IN BCC'S BAND STATED THAT GSU BLEW THEM SO DON'T COME ON HERE WITH THE LIES. THE SWAC REPRESENTED AND THAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE, BECAUSE GRAM SAID SO LOL. BCC DID SOND GOOD BUT THIS IS NOT CONCERT SEASON I GUESS WE WON'T SEE EYE TO EYE BECAUSE THE SWAC AND MEAC ARE LIKE NIGHT AND DAY. THINGS ARE DONE VERY DIFFERENT.

From the sideline view in ohio both bands were good both bands had strong points and weak points
1st off Gram took the show on the field BCC had a boring show
2nd BCC is way over rated I expected more from them to me it was a waste of time Gram has made a big come up in the last couple of years so beware

Is this true what they're sayng about gram? Could they have came up over the past few years? Stay tuned for the next Red River Classic for the final results will be posted.
