One thing I've noticed about high school football in GA

Over say, the last 5 years or so... the black high schools here have definitely caught up to the rest. Between Cedar Grove, Langston Hughes, Creekside, Westlake and Mays they are no longer pushovers for the big Gwinnett and Cobb County schools. If I'm looking for talent that may fly under the radar... Im just sayin.

I had been keeping up as my lil cuz RJ Johnson was the QB at Westlake the last three years. He finished his career as the 9th most prolific passer in the state of Georgia.

Watching several of his games in person over the years like against Creekside and Carrollton last year, I was shocked about the speed and size of Ga high school football. I am so biased towards my native Louisiana, but the South Fulton teams like Westlake, Creekside, and Langston Hughes are no joke at the skilled positions.

I remember I think it was Creekside’s band had a heavy Sonic Boom influence too.

Creekside is a Cookman style band now

Westlake is led by a Bama State alum but their drum majors March like Tennessee State

Langston was one of the only 2 SU style bands in Atlanta but their old director is at Howard now, & the new BD at Langston is a Morris Brown alum. I can’t wait to see them

As far as football, I’m extremely happy to see our kids stay home instead of going to the white schools in Gwinnett. I’ll take Westlake, Langston & Cedar Grove against anyone in GA (except Buford 😂)

Hopefully this trend happens in basketball as well. Wendell Carter wasn’t supposed to be at Pace Academy, & Anthony Edwards was an APS (Atlanta Public Schools) kid before they came and snatched him up & put him in some rich private school on the northside

Yea Buford has been hell ever since I was in high school. We used to hate going there and Parkview back when they were hell. And they've done it on nearly every classification too lol. When I was in school they were only single A.

I saw Pebblebrook band two weeks ago and sound wise, they were mid-season form! Not sure where their director is from but they sound real good.
I went to the Langston vs Carrollton game last night and that was an instant classic! Langston's band marched in like SU with the lil chant they do...didn't know the director was from somewhere else.

It's funny how schools like Pebblebrook, Morrow, Riverdale and the likes are all black now. When I was in the band all those schools were lilly white to the core. Damn near everything on the west side all the way out to Carrollton is becoming mostly black. Douglasville, Villa Rica, Winston... all largely black now. Hell Douglasville has 2 schools that are all black now. Migration in this area has been crazy.

Oh wow! Now that is interesting. I never thought in my lifetime Douglasville, Villa Rica and Winston would be largely full of us. So does Valdosta, Lagrange and Macon still have good football teams? Those schools use to beat the breaks off of APS back in the day. lol

Callaway is basically LaGrange now.. they beat Fitzgerald to win their first championship in 2020. Troup went to the final 4 last year and they're expected to be pretty strong this year. When they built Callaway it took a large chunk of the black kids from LaGrange and sent them to Callaway and Troup. Ironically, the two teams that are dominating down there now. LaGrange never really found their footing again after Steve Pardue went to Kentucky. When I was in high school our schedule usually looked something like this:

East Coweta
Newnan
Valdosta
Griffin
Parkview
Northside Warner Robins
Carver Columbus
Southwest Dekalb
Redan
Colquitt Co
Spalding
Shaw
Troup

Imagine having to run that every year. I know they were relieved when the school dropped a classification because those schedules used to be brutal.

My wife is a Valdosta alum and they are still steady but no where near where they used to be. They got beat pretty good yesterday in Ohio.
Lagrange is still decent but Macon schools have nothing! All the good kids there go to schools in Warner Robins or one of the private schools.

The Westside Classic between Washington High and Douglass Aka Hightower Train Station school is coming up. I haven't been in over 20 years. I make come up. It will be good to see some of the folks from the westside I haven't seen in decades.

Gwinnett County became a solidly GOP county during the mid 1980s. A few of their schools were good to excellent in football while the others were average to below average. Now, Whites are a minority in Gwinnett overall and in the school system. Similar things could be said for Cobb County, also a former solidly GOP county. Also, DeKalb County did not become majority Black until about 1990.

I do not remember hearing much from Cedar Grove during the 80s as oppose to SW DeKalb, which turned out quite a few college football signees. Lately as it has been said, Cedar Grove has gone on a state championship run.

There is no county in the metro that won't be majority black at some point since it's vast majority black folks that are moving here. Maybe places way north like Cumming will be able to avoid it but you can just look at the demographics pretty much everywhere around here now and see what's up.

Interesting thought. Cherokee, Dawson, and Fayette counties may be the last majority white counties in Metro Atlanta.

Perhaps a black ring of sorts will surround Atlanta and Decatur ITP.
