Yes they do use Ipads.

Great use of technology. I thought about doing something similar at the HS where I teach. Funding is the roadblock. It is nice to know that someone has achieved it already. It will help to justify the project.

Other than soccer, I don't think they are into American football that much, but they do have an interest in marching bands. Here's a video of 7 to 12 year old Japanese kids in a marching band back in 1999. It won't be long when they create and program robotics to do the same.

I somewhat disagree. Back in the late 70s and 80s I saw some SU JSU shows do similar. But not as animated and that's probably was due to smaller numbers the Ohio state has. Those drills are a numbers game. The more you have more impressive the visual effect. Ex.. SUs Stick man and one of them can't remember which one; I want the credit to go to the right band, one of them made a trumpet and the valves went up and down and a music note came out and floated down the field. I also remember the old college band director conferences Dowell Taylor would go to and each director brought clips of their bands performances as part of a video display. At one such event Dowell was asked by a couple directors about the technical parts of how he forms the floats the JSU out of the end zone. Now it not the same JSU float as it is done now. It use to be done one letter at a time. You ole heads who marched in these drills help out on who did what. As much as I hate to admit it SU to me back then was impressive with that kind of drill. But not that circle drill or the score that's not on the list sorry. So Tom Joyner is correct for giving them props but he needs to get his HBCU band trivia correct. Big up to Ohio St but big ups to Doc Greg's for his work on drills back in the day when iPads and TV didn't help.
Well we're talking about now and not the 70's or 80's. I was part of those 80's bands and we did do a lot of animated shows ourselves (PV). So I do understand that part of what you're talking about. Most HBCU bands now has shyed away from doing those type of drills and just used the typical block formations with pinwheels, diamonds, squares and stuff like that.
FAMU was great at doing the animated shows and I'm not sure what they are doing since their return since I haven't seen them.
But, what Ohio State is doing week to week is way beyond anything our bands are doing.

Fiyah I was responding to your comment of none of our bands "can do" I guess you cleared your point when you used the "will" do it part because they have gotten away from it. But a lot of the old director who did these drills are gone. But it can be done today. There are some new talented young assistants out there. They need to be pushed into not just charting songs that blow your wig back but drills that blow your mind like back when we drilled. That's my little say.

Schools ironically were more innovative then without iPads, etc...but also you had bands doing pregame shows and halftime shows go over 12 minutes....plus directors then dealt with students who were way more dedicated and there were no restrictions such as time limits for practice

He and J Anthony Brown did a bit on the Tom Joyner Morning Show last week where he said he was embarrassed by black college bands halftime shows and how they do the same things over and over. He said he was tired of hearing "Neck" and fans acting like they had just heard a 40 year old song for the first time. He said he was tired of hearing "Get Ready" and the "Fat Boy" out in front of the band doing splits. He did say he was partial to the "Honey Bees" at Bama State (LOL). Basically they were being funny, but at the same time seriously saying it's time for black college bands to step it up like Ohio State.
Oh yeah, keep in mind that TJ does give a lot of money to HBCU's. (sorry GR)

I like their band but I always wondered why people think what they do is so hard or so amazing by how fast they can put it together. All they have to do is follow the charts during practice and follow their location on the IPAD. ANY band can do these types of shows with that kind of equipment.
But just to remind people, FAMU made a ESCALADE complete with spinning rims coming down the field 5 or 6 years ago at the battle of the bands in Jackson. No IPODS in sight. Just old fashion 9 to 5 high step marching, hitting their marks. :lol:

Some folks say the same songs are tradition. Ohio state dots the I everygame so it's not like there is a lot of innovation left. I like how the Boom did not dance the first game and did there stand dance for dougie fresh and got the F off the field... It's the band yall it's there to support the team. Yall want one of those Beyonce themed halftimes like Michigan did a few years ago. That take time and money .

I would still rather be in a HBCU band any day. We family know matter where you marched. They don't have that or the crazy memories like we do. Y'all know that one retarded band member who you thought was crazy, but after you marched with him he turned out to be the coolest, but still crazy to this day.:lol:
