Officiating in the GCC Game

Ummm not using my logic but the actual rules of the game - a stiff arm to the face is Illegal Use of the Hands to the face - refs are calling it more now than in the past because defensive players and coaches have complained about it not being called like it is supposed to be called. You also hear offensive linemen called for the same things - and on that call they dont yank and pull - its just like it is called - its a Hands to the Face call.

But again Im using "my" logic but the actual rules of the game. But riddle me this - are all you saying that it is not a problem or a penalty to touch a player's facemask? Using all of your logic?

Yep that's what I'm saying. When an illegal hands to the face is called it is usually when a lineman has his hands under the facemask and pushes up, shoot they even call d-linemen now when they get under the helmet. Just a straight up chuck to the face, I haven't seen called, but then I don't watch football with you.

The play to me looks like a DB who got beat and was trying his best to make a play. No foul.

Not only did this happen once, it happend back to back. The first play was called pass interference, the second one we all know resulted in a touchdown.

Which play is this? This is OBVIOUSLY not P.I.... for more than one reason.

The pics posted show the plays in question. In the first pic, the play was called pass interference - and Hoffman's face mask is pulled. The second pic is a continuation of the pic JC posted to start this thread, showing the SU defender falling off of Hoffman.

For people to look at that picture and not see that its clearly a case of interference is mind boggling. :scared:
The defender is making contact with the receiver before the ball arrives.

That's textbook pass interference

The SECOND pic? :shame:

Oh yeah... contact can be made before the ball arrives if both are going for the ball. The defender has as much right to the ball as the receiver.

yeah, incidental contact can be made, but putting your hands on the receivers face mask is not incidental
and I havent read the story yet to know which play goes along with the picture, but if its the one that I'm thinking, then it was such an obvious penalty. Everybody in the stadium knew it was a penalty. The defender was clearly beaten and damn near tackled Hoffman.

Well the play in the first pic was a TD anyway. He couldn't have "damn near tackled" him before the TD.

The play in the first pic that I just posted was NOT a touchdown, that was called Pass Interference, the second pic posted WAS a touchdown. If you were at the game, listened to it or watched it, you should remember a series (our 3rd TD in the first qtr) where TJ threw a pass on the ASU side of the field to #10 - it resulted in a pass interference call. The very next play- we ran the exact same play on the SU sideline and it resulted in the TD - those are the pics of that 2 play series - in addition the pic posted by JC is the play that was the TD in that series also. JC's pic and the second pic I post show the SU defender in 2 postions on the play - JC's pic as he has his hand on the facemask of Hoffman, the pic I posted as he is falling down as his hand slid off of Hoffman's facemask.

But as I said last night, the points are moot because it is still a TD and the game is over. But its no wonder everyone keeps talking about officiating when you have clear evidence of what an actual violation is -and you say its not. Perhaps the officiating just reflects the knowledge of some involved.

majiksity... you edited your post. The FIRST PIC I was speaking of was the one in the first post of the THREAD.

Anyway if a TD is scored on what could "possibly" be P.I. the Ref will just save his energy and not even throw the flag. What's the use? He may be been ready to throw it had the TD not been scored.

Jag4life - I think you replied before I was able to get both pics up but I feel you.

And as for your thought on it being a TD and the ref just saving his energy and not throwing the flag on the play - I agree with you on that 100% - my issue is that some people couldnt see that the SU defender's hand on Hoffman's facemask constitute's a penalty - that's all I was trying to say.

I hear you well and we have no problem - and its never an issue when people can agree to disagree sometimes

Dont you guys think you might be over analyzing still pictures.
just my 2 sense

It just goes to show that even when they win it's something about SU that gets under their skin.

bluedog,
stop crying dude.
If you were at the game and you have an objective bone in your body, then you would surely post that was interference.

And GR is right. The still shot doesnt really show the true picture. In real time (and I've seen the tape of the game too), it was without question, pass interference.

Was there ever any doubt you'd see it any other way??? :dizzy:

So would the flag have made a difference in the play?

No, but the flag should have been thrown and the offense given the option of declining the penalty. This thread has nothing to do with SU but officiating the game.

This type of none call is what I dispise and put the officials in a bad light. Take for example the delayed grounding call against ASU Pete made them call by coming out on the field. A coach should not have to do that.

If anything, this thread proves that SU fans are sensitive to the allegations of officials cheating for them. :wavey:

I wouldn't care if it were a pee-wee game. The call didn't need to be made. It is not clear cut in real time action.
