Cunningham Will Retire With Eagles

BETHLEHEM, Pa.- Randall Cunningham will officially retire from the NFL as a member of the Eagles prior to a preseason game against Baltimore next Friday.

Cunningham, who spent last season with the Ravens, played with the Eagles from 1985-95. He holds four team records, including most 300-yard passing games (13), most yards passing in a single game (447 yards) and longest punt (91 yards).

Cunningham is the NFL's all-time leader in rushing yards among quarterbacks with 4,928.

"Randall brought so much excitement to the city of Philadelphia, the Eagles and to the NFL," Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said Thursday. "Personally, I'm very proud and excited that he wanted to retire as an Eagle. He's meant so much to this city and this franchise."

Cunningham led the Eagles to three consecutive playoff appearances following a six-year absence.

Cunningham retired after the 1995 season, then signed the next year with Minnesota. He stepped in when starter Brad Johnson got hurt and helped the Vikings score an NFL-record 556 points and earn a berth in the NFC championship game.

After three seasons with the Vikings, Cunningham spent 2000 as a backup to Troy Aikman in Dallas before joining the Ravens last year.

He finished with 29,979 yards passing, 207 TDs and 134 interceptions. He also had 35 TDs rushing.


Cunningham was by far the most exciting player to ever play the QB position. Bar none. Good luck in your retirement, Randall ! !
 



My favorite {s} of all time is from the old school. Joe Gilliam, Eldridge Dickey, Marlin Briscoe and James Harris. I love that old school QB, because of the prejudice they had to face by the fans, team owner and team members. Those three brothers paved the way for blacks that are now playing QB. They were not about money, but they loved playing the game.
 
I'm proud of each brother that has played the position...however, I took special pride in watching Joe Gilliam, James Harris, and Doug Williams. Just as I now feel something special for Steve McNair. I recognize that Moon, Cunningham, Jeff Blake, Aaron Brooks, Kordell Stewart, Shaun King, etc deserve our support and good wishes, but I'm just down for the brothers that represents the HBCU's.

You asked to pick one, but I must have two. Both are Gramblinites so I'm not able to choose one over the other. So in no particular order:

James Harris ==> Because he played during my youth and during the time that I was still a high school football player. "WE" could talk about our quarterback to the white high school teammates. I remember telling a lot of them that he represented the change that was eventually going to come at that position.

Doug Williams ===> Because he was my peer and school mate. Plus Doug was doing his thing during the time I was entering the workplace. I could talk about his exploits and abilities and just watch some white co-workers cringe. I remember a white dude asked me "Is he really that good". I told him..."He has to be or he wouldn't be playing". A lot of them were just sick when he outdueled their golden boy John Elway to win the SuperBowl and MVP.
 
I REMEMBER WATCHING JAMES "SHACK"HARRIS BACK IN THE DAY. I WAS IN MISSOURI WHEN DOUG WAS IN THE SUPERBOWL AND I WAS THE ONLY ONE AT THE SCHOOL GOING FOR WASHINGTON. I ALMOST SHED A TEAR WHEN I SAW ALL THOSE LONG FACES AT HALFTIME, MUCH LIKE

LOL ! ! !

Yeah white folks were in pain when Doug mowed down Denver and John Wayne, oops, I mean John Elway.

That was a very proud moment for me too.
