Cognac industry toasts the hip-hop world
By SHELLEY EMLING
Cox News Service

LONDON -- "Yea, yea, yea just pass the Courvoisier," Sean "P. Diddy" Combs intoned in a 2002 hit song written by fellow hip-hop star Busta Rhymes.

And America was listening. Sales of the pricey French cognac shot up nearly 30 percent that year, helping pull the 300-year-old French industry from the brink of disaster.

What kills me is that I doubt any of these cats have endorsements or stock in the products they are pushing. I think it was mentioned earlier that Nelly made basicaly nothing off the increase of sales of Airforce Ones. Why are we pushing products...expensive ones at that....on our people and then not even trying to make money off the sales.

This is my grief too. You can be an entertainer and an entreprenuer and look daayum good or thugged out doing it. So do it.

Actually Nelly has a Nike contract...so does Busta with Courvoisier. Peety Pablo has a deal with Seagrams....also Run DMC had a huge contract with Adidas back in the day.

Nelly did not get the contract with Nike until after he blew them AF1's up. I don't know about that Busta with Courvoisier because it was an article posted on here last year stating how the Congac industry was suffering until that song came out and sales went up. None of the Cognac industry people even knew his name or about the song. If he has one it was again after he made them billions.

I know Peety Pablo and Seagrams had a deal but as Cee Dog said Nelly didn't make a deal with Nike before pushing shoes. From the way this article is talking it doesn't seem that Courvoisier has a contract with Busta. Do you have any articles on that? I'd like to see if they do have contracts and if they made the contracts before releasing the songs.

I don't have the article on Busta but I remember seeing it on MTV or BET like 2 years ago.

Also, it doesn't matter when they got the contract, but it does matter that he is getting paid for it.

They do it now HOPING to get a deal. Even that's going by the wayside now. No pay, no play is slowly making it's way around now.

As far as Courvoisier go, the company hired Russel Simmons PR firm to market in the hip hop/black communities.

It does matter. Would you paint someones house without an agreement to pay and hope they say more than thank you. Yes the rapper is making money off the song itself but why not garuantee you will get paid by talking to the company about the idea first. Now if they don't agree then you can chance droppin the song and watchin their stock go up and maybe after seeing the results want to talk to you but why not try to insure some loot first.
