Teenager's nose bitten off during assault

COLLINSVILLE, Ala. (AP) - A Collinsville teenager's nose was bitten off when assaulted at a gas station by a man asking for money.
Etowah County Sheriff James Hayes said two men approached 16-year-old Jason Smith at the station Thursday and asked for $5 for gas. When the teenager told the men he didn't have the money, one man threw him to the ground and bit off his nose, Hayes said.
Sheriff's investigator Tommy Wiggonton said first-degree assault charges were filed against Michael Dewayne Jackson, 22, also of Collinsville. Jackson was being held in the Etowah County Detention Center on $10,000 bail.
Wiggonton said someone at the gas station was able to recover Smith's nose, but it could not be reattached. The youth is scheduled to begin a series of plastic surgeries starting Friday, authorities said.
The assault occurred at a service station on U.S. 11 near the Etowah-DeKalb County line.
