New Orleans HS's Vs. Atlanta HS's

The Drills are all imitations of SU and some of FAM.

be original, U never see St. Aug copy any other band. (u never will)

As a matter of fact, alot of SU drills came from St. Aug (but that's a whole other topic for another time.)

BE Original Please, then try to compete.

Nuff said.

Wow!! So are you saying the famous Juke Box imitates a highschool? Wow!!! learn something new everyday. So you telling a highschool to be orginal, but saying it's okay for a supposed to be great college band to copy after a highschool!!! Wow!!!! :smh:

Now Cee if you believe whoever Jag888 is then I have some swamp land to sell you.

If SU took St. Aug drills then that would mean SU would look like St. Aug.

That poster just said St. Aug don't look like SU.......which they never have. So how could SU taken their drills then? Sounds like a contradiction.

Hamp is from Houston and was at St. Aug before Doc took over SU I believe. So you would think if we copied the Aug then we would have looked like them. Actually one of my LBs who is from St. Aug will tell you that our styles are drastically different. Hell Doc used to tell them cats to try to march like SU when we were crabs because they couldn't break that St. Aug style of march at first.

All Drills that most of the HBCU band directors used back in the day came from PWCs and we just added some flavor and variations to it. I am sure Hamp did the same thing at St. Aug......copied some PWC drill and put a St. Aug flavor to it.

Yeah I figured he was a youngster. I learned along time ago never ever talk about bands with folks that don't no anything about the 80's. Different mind set. You see all these young cats know only about Dekalb County bands in Atl. They don't know the history of the ATL public school bands. Half of them don't even know where MLK is in ATL.

I'm in that Mays clip!

Umm...There are mayber two good N.O. schools right now that I've seen..St. Aug and Walker. I thought dude was asking about today, because what happened yesterday...you cant change. But TODAY I think ATL/Metro ATL bands have the better groups collectively.

what he ment was that Hamp (st. aug's) olde band director designed some of southerns shows, not southern did what st. aug did lol..

and NO bands pre katrina would smash ATL bands. but i mean seriously tho, most of our bands in the NO wasent that big like SWD was. most of our bands wasent bigger 100 to 130 people, with the exception of st. aug, kennedy and maybe 35, theyre like the biggest in the city, but size aint the issue here. our bands are more intense and more competitive than most others. simply because after football season we have parade season to keep the rivalry goin between schools

well thats what i herd. but i may be wrong..i just asked my bro in law "mummy" and said no, at least not in the 80's. imma ask a st aug old head the same thing so this can be put to rest

well i was told that the sunburst came from the aug in 1959 or somethin, and 8 to 5 was brought from hamp via military..AND..some arrangements came from the aug also.......

uh no.....the sunburst did not come from St. Aug......neither did 8 to 5. LOL.

Again, all old school band directors from Doc Greggs, Hamp, Hutch, Foster, Davis etc.. etc.... got their stuff from the Big 10 bands and the teachings up there since most went to study there for grad school.

Did you guys not see the special on black college bands during the SU and FAMU game then they re-aired it during the SWAC Championship I believe.

They all learned the same stuff back then and each took their own interpetation of it and implemented it at the various schools.

They all share ideas. I know Doc has alway lauded Hamp for being an innovator and wanted him to join him at SU but I have never heard at any time even from all the St. Aug cats who marched with us, that SU used St. Aug drills. Now your brother n law Mummy........created the Mummy Glide that the snare drummers are supposed to be doing now and don't anymore. LOL.

Carry on.

That St Aug show was better than any field show I have ever seen from SU, and I have seen MANY field shows (old and new) from SU. MY first time really seeing St AUG (field show wise) but I have some friends who marched there. They say that SU bandmembers were jealous of them. Is there some type of rivalry between St Aug and SU?

No rivalry on our part. I do think St. Aug believed they were just as good as SU in their minds. Hamp and Doc are good friends. We had St. Aug folks in the band. I know my LB from there always said that it was in their mind they could compete with SU. When he got to the Jukebox, he was like WTF was I thinking. LOL. I just talked him last night about this.

As far as they having better field shows than SU......I don't know about that one either. When I marched we had some smoking field shows and I know in the 70s they did isht that SU aint done since then. Doc had a drill book with literally hundreds of Drills. The 90s and 2000 versions of the Juke got cheated out of not doing some of them

There is one I saw on film called the blooming flower drill. Simply awesome. They did it in the 70s or right before I got there.

I work with bands in secondary education. I don't know what there is up north, but the best program in the south is at Lassiter HS in Marrietta, GA, directed by Alfred Watkins (FAMU). They march corps, high-step, and showstyle, win BOA competitions up and down the country, send multiple bands for state adjudication and receive the highest ratings, and it is the only band program that I know of that has five - that's 5 - jazz bands.

I would put them up against any HS band in the country.

Lassiter band is nowhere near high-step or show style... Lassiser band is 90% white. Now they are GREAT, but I dont think they fit this topic at all.

There style varies.

Yea...they came to LaGrange one year and did a highstep style show and everyone was like WTF:xeye: But I mean lets be realistic...if youve seen SU you've seen pretty much all the NO bands. Not really much variety in that department. Seems like ATL has some bands comin out of nowhere every year now. Look at schools like MLK, Miller Grove...hell Pebblebrook. I can remember when Pebblebrook was like 100% white now they showstyle lol

You are OBVIOUSLY unaware! The only New Orleans High School that has ever born a resemblence to Southern was Kennedy, but they don't exist any longer, so no one holds that distinction.
If you don't know, you shouldn't comment. i.e., I don't know enough about ATL bands to have an opinion so I haven't commented as far as thats concerned. If you have no idea about New Orleans band, you should refrain from commenting also.

Thanks JR.

I crabbed in 91, the year after St. Aug did the purple smoke and In the Stone, and came off the field to "free my people" at SU's highschool day. A lot of the seniors and juniors from that St. Aug band came to SU the next 2 years, and they will tell you that at that time as High schoolers, they thought that they were better that Southern, but there mindset quickly changed after hitting the Yard.

But we did use the Blue and gold smoke in ATL in '91:lmao: along with in the Stone, but thats where the comparisons stop.
