New Court Ruling on JUCO Players

NCAA athletes get five calendar years to play four seasons. Junior college counts as a season of play — a policy at the heart of the case.

The court, at least temporarily, has agreed with the quarterback — junior college, which is not an NCAA institution, should not count against a player’s NCAA eligibility. According to the court’s ruling, the NCAA cannot enforce its eligibility rules that would normally prohibit Pavia from playing one more season of Division I football.

Wednesday’s ruling is a landmark moment. It not only paves the way for all junior college players to gain an additional year of eligibility, but it may invite future legal challenges over the NCAA’s traditional eligibility policy for even non-junior college athletes — the five-years-to-play-four rule.

The 30,000-foot view of this? It is yet another court ruling that cripples a long-standing NCAA policy — at very least, the third major court decision in the last year to bar the association from enforcing a rule.

this right here is the problem - no loyalty and greed and they made a bold demand

“While the Court’s ruling does not restrict where Diego can play next season, he loves Vanderbilt and Coach Lea,” Downton said in the statement. “So long as he receives an appropriate NIL package, I expect to see him in the black and gold for as long as he has eligibility remaining and Jerry Kill and Tim Beck are coaching in Nashville.”

Man 6 years to play college football is crazy. HS players consistently getting shafted.

We were just discussing the reality that HBCU'S are like the new Jucos or feeder schools. But why come to SU/ Gram if you can develop 2 full years at a JUCO & still have 4 years eligibility left to possibly play FBS or Major ball( making nil money)?

If this stands JUCO may be a better 1st option than the SWAC.

What will this mean for NAIA schools?

They are so screwed. Same for any HS athlete that's not a 4-5 star

That's why there's been an uptick in 3 stars signing with SWAC schools out of high school the past few years. Signing with a SWAC school is better than JUCO and they'll prove if they are good enough or not

This ruling begins the death knell for SWAC and MEAC schools. Why not go to a juco and still have four years of eligibility remaining? Kids will develop in jucos and make the move to four year schools after one or two years. Jucos will become loaded with two and three star high school players.

So what if you’re at a four-year, then move to a two-year.

Sneakily, the future of the federal Department of Education may play a role when it comes to SAP and other means to determine actual matriculation.

Trump plans on getting rid of the department of education so it's going to be wild

Excellent question. Just had 2 2nd level cousins on opposite sides of the ball txfer from sam houston to blinn jc. It will be interesting to see how they matriculate w/ this new ruling.

not enough spots on JUCO. Everybody doesn't want to slum it in Mississippi JUCOs. Most of them are worse than HBCU's from a campus experience standpoint.

Players will still come to the swac and meac, it's just the quality of players that we will receive.

Coaches will really have to be able to develop talent (and then worry about FBS schools snatching up said talent).

Tell me about it, Holmes in Goodman sucked!

As someone who does work for MDCC, Holmes is like USM compared to Moorhead lol

Even Coahoma is better facilities wise

First year players that jump into the portal and get stranded can go JUCO and return later with three years of eligibility left. A redshirt portal kid under the same scenario will have four years of eligibility remaining. Scenarios involving back to back medical redshirts or a combination of redshirt and medical redshirt for first year player create other scenarios.
