NCCU taking on Human Jukebox

Who is there to judge how we execute our style? all concert literature I EVER performed came with a summary of sorts, explaining what the composer/arranger is trying to get across or convey.... What particular style and how the particular piece should be executed. According to OUR arrangers, we execute to a T every song, and I'm sure NCCU the same..... So, the only other way to judge is by house.

That's what oldheads are for...to get pass the fluff, smoke, and mirrors and assess what is actually going on. Oldheads can tell such things as proper phrasing, articulation, intonation, note accuracy, proper wearing of the uniform, proper marching technique (95 degree knee lifts are just as wrong as 35 degree lifts), etc. The crowd hardly cares about such things if they care at all.

As long as they execute they CAN get house, because in my opinion, the 1st band has the advantage. They make the all important 1st impression to the crowd at halftime. As long as they look like they know what they're doing, and make it look like they are having fun with high energy, they will get some house, but I've seen them, and they are..... Like I said earlier..... Drier than a mouth full of uncooked grits.

While having fun is way overrated in my opinion, high energy is certainly a must. That energy must be put into the technique of the performance. The place that most HBCU's lose this concept arrives when the band starts to dance. Since they are NOT the dance troupe, they normally look worse than my daughter's first dance recital in Ballet I. Of course, most of the time the crowd is screaming for the gyrations and whatever the lastest craze is in the club and not evaluating the now 250 member dance company on its dance execution. MY PERSONAL PREFERENCE (is that loud enough) is to see the band's energy in doing drills and making music - something that the house cannot do.

Minimal house is my prediction. Its gonna be a pity party, and the the S is gonna climb back in the stands and finish murdalizing them..... Case closed, cut and dry.

I guess they didnt come prepared with a book. As i predicted..their going home with da azz whipped.. to bad the football didnt win. ah well

This is exactly the kind of reaction that I expected from the uninitiated.

When you're talking about what is in your book, marches demonstrate depth.

I am curious to know how many marches are in each band's book. That would tell me something that I had not thought about previously. New thread anyone?

No discredit to playing marches, shid, those are a must have in any band's repetoire. The timing of playing the marches is probably the issue here.

When we (Terrel_SU and I) were in the band, we used to open up with marches at the beginning of the game and even sometimes at the beginning of the 5th quarter. It's probably the same now or maybe even better, but we kept a minimum of 3-4 marches in the book.

If you're 90mins into the 5th quarter and you've been trying to keep up with the opposing band playing Top40 hits, Oldies, etc... and then you play a march, to me that appears that you're either a) running out of songs to play, or b) trying to stall/fake out the other band to think u're out.

Someone who was at the game will probably have to give the full story, but I believe the march was the last song that NCCU played. ~shrug~

And yeah, we did have more songs, but we also have a hotel in New Orleans a helluva long bus ride back to Durham... Interesting game though. The crowd isn't as belligerent as everyone makes them out to be.

I'm going to say this:

Reid and Clemons - the directors - have a FAMU/FSU/Disney influence. NCCU will play music. There will be plenty of woodwinds and they will be heard. People who know MUSIC will be impressed. NCCU won't be coming after "house"; they will be coming to take out your musical heart...and their auxilaries will be on point. Believe me when I tell you that if FSU selected them to be their representatives in Raleigh, the Sound Machine has the entire package.

Expect them to play marches, classical, old school, and current - and that is just in the 5th.

Actually, me and a couple of others were keeping count. SU played 27-28 songs. NCCU played 25.

Having 12 marches in my book does not make me a better musician. The only way to determine who is better is for us to sit down and play together sometime. I enjoy that sort of thing and welcome the opportunity.

I do find it curious that the 5th would have 50+ tunes played as one band blew out another. Or was it a blow-out? Not being there, I have to trust the opinions of those who were. I am hoping to see some clips from the faithful fans.

I am glad that your visit to Mumford was a pleasant one. The regular people there are a lot kinder than those you will find on this band board. Hopefully NCCU will schedule games with other SWAC schools and you will receive even better treatment.

It was MASSACRE. NCCU played 25 songs but none of them was groovin', funky, or blowin'...Basically, they played songs just to say that they played them. Their sound was not effective (even when I stood directly in front of them). Their book is diverse, but slaw, and their arrangements left much to be desired (ending songs on leading chords and slaw solo rhythms). They remind me of a baby BCC that doesn't have a full sounds and can't march.

You support my point - though I don't know what you mean by "not effective".

That is their style. The only question is whether they executed their style well. Their style is not classic "SWAC style". It is not even MEAC style. It is more ACC style. With that in mind, how did they do executing their style?

I will tell you that Florida State's book is about 40 tunes deep (I was in Tallahassee last Thursday). With 450 kids playing, the volume would be impressive. They include EWF, Beyonce, Angie Stone, the Eagles, John Mayer, etc. The rhythms are not funky and the sound is ridiculously clean.

FAMU is much smaller this year, but much cleaner also.
