NCAA Tournament First Four Preview: Texas Southern vs Cal Poly


Their defense was weak against PV. What Madame anybody think it would be different this time. Murray saved them in the swac with his shot blocking, but asking him to be your total defense and offense is asking a lot.

They did force 10 TOs in the second half due to ball pressure and trapping in the front court.

Don't 100 percent agree with that. They had absolutely no flow and Murray forced a ton of shots. It's great that a good bit went in otherwise it would've been a total blowout. Great players involves other team mates as well. Give the ball up, slow the game down and stop playing 1 on 5.

Isn't this the way TSU has played all season though? They had a lot of talent this year

Cal-Poly got hot in their tournament and it carried over tonight. They shot 57 percent. Defense was not our strength all year. Our shooters did not show up. They did not even have the attempts. I knew Murray would get his points. But we needed offense from the other guys.......didn't hap'm cap'm.

I know at the end of the day everything is about money, but going forward I'm in favor of the regular season champ going to the Big Dance and not having a tourney. AGAIN I KNOW ITS ALL ABOUT THE DOLLAR! Even though my team was ineligible I know they would of had a way better showing and would of won this game. Again just a bad loss and the conference reputation for the worst basketball conference lives on!
 



I'm proud of my TSU Tigers for making it this far; however, disappointed that our team did not step up and play their best basketball tonight. The defensive side of the ball we have been lackluster all year and we needed to elevate that along with our guys being able to hit 3-pointers wasnt on display tonight. Cal Poly become more confident as the game went on and they played great basketball at the right time. I took a peak at their schedule last night and became concerned once I saw that they loss to #6 Arizona 73-62, #14 Oregon 82-61, and losses to Pitt and Stanford. That being said, I knew we had to play a complete game and get other players to have a good game and unfortunately, it did not happen for us tonight.
 
Just read a telling quote from a Cal Poly player that shows the difference in the way they approached the game and the way other SWAC schools approached TSU...

"He was going to get his points either way, so we knew he would just need to take the other players out of the game," said Nwaba, who got Cal Poly out of the blocks with eight of its first 10 points. "That was our plan going in."

They allowed Murray to get his and shut every other avenue down, whereas the SWAC schools were so focused on stopping him that the rest of the team was able to win ball games. Those emphatic, back-side blocks were telling. Murray never saw either coming. He thought he had clean shots, because in league play, he was surrounded and banged as soon as he touched the ball. Cal Poly allowed him to catch and make a move, but weak side help was there to time the shots....

All in all, TSU wasn't putrid, and they didn't get blown out, but this definitely is not the game they were capable of.

I respectfully disagree. Most of the coaches approached playing Texas Southern and Murray differently all season. Most of the time, it was dictated by the style of defense the SWAC team was accustomed to playing as well as the size and caliber of players the team had.

Outside of Murray (14 of 23 = .609 FGM-A; 3 of 5 =.600 3PM-A) and Rodriguez (4 of 7 = .571 FGM-A) the numbers tell the obvious story on the offensive side of the ball.

Both Murray and Rodriguez combined for 52 of the 69 (75%) total points the Tigers scored.

The rest of the Texas Southern Tigers shot 6 for 20 (= .300, field goal percentage) and 1 for 10 (= .100, 3-point percentage).

FGM-A
24-50 = 48.0%

3PM-A
4-13 = 30.8%

FTM-A
17-22 = 77.3%

Cal-Poly (They were at 60% for most of the game)
FGM-A
29-51 = 56.9%

3PM-A
6-15 = 40.0%

17-22 = 77.3%

You're not beating ANYONE is the other team is shooting in the high 50-percent range for the game.
 
They tried to make Murray do everything. One player was under the goal and instead of going for the easy 2, he passed the ball behind him that resulted in a turnover. :smh: Of course, it was Murray who was behind with 3 defenders right there.

Like I said earlier, what hurt TSU the MOST was the turnovers and lack of defense in a stretch of about 6-8 minutes in the first half when Murray first went to the bench. TSU played like the team that they were, and that stretch honestly cost them the game, because even as ugly as it was the rest of the game, they played with Cal Poly.

I been saying it for years.
SWAC teams always look good against other conference opponents. Outside of the rare instances like last year when SU REALLY had a good team, we get our heads cracked by any mediocre team. Cal-Poly was 13-19. They got hot in the tournament. Not exactly a powerhouse that kicked the SWAC champs but that had a winning record.

Basketball 101...If you are double teamed that means someone is open. If you are triple teamed 2 people are open. What are your chances of making a shot when 3 people are on you. 30 plus points is nice but wasn't the goal to win the game? Takes a team effort to do that, no matter what you say folk unless he was trying to go Kobe and drop 81.
