Winston-Salem State fired Coach Corey Thompson on Saturday, just hours before his team’s final home game of the regular season.
The Rams were scheduled to play Shaw at 4 p.m. The announcement was made by school officials around 12:30 p.m. in an e-mail to alumni from Eric Burns, the interim athletics director.

"During this transition, Assistant Coach Tony Jones will serve as Interim Head Men’s Basketball Coach," Burns said in the email. "Coach Jones brings valuable experience, a deep understanding of our program, and a strong commitment to the development and success of our student-athletes.
"Given the importance of this role to our athletics program and the broader university community, we will begin the search immediately to identify the next leader of our men’s basketball program."
Burns was not made available for comment.
Thompson becomes the first WSSU men's basketball coach to be fired during the season.
