NC A&T will leave MEAC for Big South Conference

I wasn't talking about the NCAA in general. My reference to comfort zone is being a member institution of a HBCU conference with the only objective of beat other HBCUs. Zero ambitions to rise above others outside of the HBCU world.

Being a Division I NCAA member, their competition has always been beyond only HBCUs. Most games they play outside football are against non-HBCUs

Please stop saying UNA is going FBS. If Jacksonville St hasn't jumped yet no way UNA is going. Maybe ten years from now but no time soon.
UNA aint going FBS.... but they are going to change conferences.... they really are waiting on that OVC invite.... they got their athletics split up in 2 different conferences now.

Not shocked at all. Not a good look for Hbcu football but I understand it. Travel is better and a raise in competition. They’ve dominated hbcu football long enough. See what you can do in another conference

This might explain why they are laterally moving to the Big South. Power ranking means a lot when it comes to scheduling.

This is a 2012 article, how are you gonna go by that in 2020?

they play North Dakota State in a few months - that is a barometer game. If they get blown out the fallout socially will be ugly as they won’t have anyone on their side.

They had the best of both worlds. Their brand is already established.

Interesting points!

NCAT is making the move that works for them, others will do the same. If that means staying or switching conferences (PWI or HBCU). This seems to be a well run university, I wish other HBCUs were run as well. More HBCUs will close in this decade because of poor management and clinging to past instead of making moves that focus on the future.
:tiptoe:

I wish them the best and will continue to support them.

Using NDST as an FCS excellence barometer is precarious at best. NDST is a good mid-level FBS program in FCS clothing. To give you a gauge on this team, Jeff Sagarin (Sagarin Ratings) have them as the 31st best team in the country year-end. In contrast, NC A&T is 149. Take it for what it's worth.....

Honestly and I hope this does not come out wrong. You can see from NCAT Future 2023 that they are trying to reestablished itself.. Not that they will ever lose the HBCU Label, But with a growing non AA enrollment they prob feel like to attract those students being in a HBCU conferences did not fit in with the NEW 2023 Vision...

This decision goes beyond SPORTS

PV played NDSU, got beat SOLIDLY like a drum, as it has against other SLC PWC schools as well, has new athletic venues, and one of the highest athletic budgets in the SWAC yet cannot get out of its own way.

I don't think NCAT has outgrown the MEAC. This says it all, imho:
(thx Journ)

In 2017-18 fiscal year, the MEAC reported annual revenue at $12,409,055.

The Big South reported $6,096,850

Please show where we've gotten a proportional amount of money of that revenue? If that were the case, we wouldn't have even entertained this.

Yes it does, you grow or die! They are choosing grow with strong leadership at the top.

What is it about the Big South Conference that makes it desirious? Who are its member institutions? Does it have a large TV congract? Does it enjoy larger attendance at its athletic functions than MEAC institutions? Are the member schools closer in proximity to A&T?

Count how many of their universities are on the brink of closure...

No.
No.

No.

-Big South has a better TV package than the MEAC and SWAC COMBINED.

11 of the Big South's members are in NC, SC or Virginia. The other 3 are in Northwest Alabama, North Georgia and New Jersey. And there is no guarantee that those 3 schools will remain in the Big South long term due to rumors of the Big South and Atlantic Sun merging.

I promise ya'll need to do your research and stop hating. A&T is doing what MOST D1 HBCUs should be doing... forcing more state funding and maximizing athletic revenue while lowering travel expenses. But we keep doing the same old BS and falling behind everybody else.

The MEAC has 2 schools that look to be going under and A&T is positioning itself to NOT have to be reactionary if other schools jump ship. Can't blame them at all

D2 and FCS public universities in Alabama aren't really in a climate to go FBS. The state funding for education isn't there, and the alumni support isn't there to offset.

Not one consultant on their team from an HBCU
