Adam Silver: Age limit top priority

NEW YORK -- Armed with majority support from owners and saying "we're ready to go," NBA commissioner Adam Silver made it clear that pushing back the league's age minimum to 20 is at the top of his priority list.

The league's owners hosted NCAA president Mark Emmert to discuss the issue as part of their annual two-day spring meeting this week. Any changes wouldn't be in place by next season because the league is waiting for the players' association to name an executive director before formally starting negotiations. But it's clear there's a growing momentum to force this occasionally divisive issue through soon, possibly in time for the 2016 draft.

Silver, who was presiding over his first board of governors meeting since taking over from former commissioner David Stern in February, said the league and the NCAA have discussed creating some programs and provisions to help players stay in college longer as part of a way to get the union to accept the changes.

When the league and the players' union signed the collective bargaining agreement in 2011, it was agreed that the current one-and-done college rule could be revised at any time. The players' union recently named Sacramento mayor and former NBA player Kevin Johnson to head a committee to name a new leader by the start of the 2014-15 season.

It also helps improve the NBA, and exposes overrated kids. I get tired of seeing these projects drafted in the lottery and fail miserably. Best care to me would be the baseball model. Let them come out in high school, but if they don't they have to do 3 years.

Here's the thing:the NCAA/wants the kids to stay in school for two years, but the scholarship is only guaranteed for one. And nobody tells a non-athlete that they should be required to stay in college for two or three years before engaging in other pursuits. Way more kids leave school after one or two years (for a number of reasons) more than college basketball players.

Finally, nobody has forced these teams to draft the one-and-done players. If anything, this is to protect the teams from themselves, not so the players can come into the league more polished. There hasn't been one good reason presented to increase the age limit in the NBA. You either develop or don't by playing in the pros, not in college.

This country HATES seeing young rich Black men! The rule is STUPID.... you will NOT get any better playing a year more of college basketball. Those who stay 3 or 4 years are NOT playing better than the kids who come out their freshmen year.

More 3-4 years players fail in pro ball than 1 and dones. Not even close.

1) How does the age limit stop folks from seeing rich, young black men? It's just one year, and correct me if I'm wrong, but the majority of players getting drafted each year will still be young black men. lol

2) I think you can find examples of both 3-4 year players and one-and-done players doing great or not-so-great things.

Heck I watched Scottie Wilbekin and Casey Prather at Florida go from relative unknowns as freshmen and sophomores to being possible 1st-round picks their senior season. Same can be said for Chandler Parsons who is tearing it up in Houston. So it goes both ways. I kind of selfishly wished Bradley Beal had stayed at UF for 1 or 2 more years because they would have definitely won a title or two with him on the team, but he was definitely ready for the NBA.

It's been posted many times but I will find it again. Even if it is even, that's not a good argument for players to stay in school for development.

I mean of course the typical one-and-done players tend to have exceptional, natural talent. I think the players that don't have that exceptional, natural talent do benefit greatly from development, especially if they had a limited skill set when they first got into college.

DALLAS -- Mavericks owner Mark Cuban believes it's in the best interests of elite prospects to play in the NBA Development League instead of spending one season in college.

"I think what will end up happening -- and this is my opinion, not that of the league -- is if the colleges don't change from the one-and-done, we'll go after the one," Cuban said. "The NCAA rules are so hypocritical, there's absolutely no reason for a kid to go [to college], because he's not going to class [and] he's actually not even able to take advantage of all the fun because the first semester he starts playing basketball. So if the goal is just to graduate to the NBA or be an NBA player, go to the D-League."

that's a cop out. These folks don't care whether blacks get money or not because either way the owners will always have more and what these kids are getting is chump change, so that is a moot point. Kids always benefit from going back to school whether it's mental, physical, or social. Case in point, Rodney Hood....nobody outside of Mississippi knew who he was till he went back to school, transferred to Duke and starred along side Jabari Parker.

I'm sorry if it seems wrong for the kids but I have to agree with this. The NBA has too many Marvin Williams types that are in the league 6-7 years and haven't done anything.

If they properly used the D-league as a real minor league a lot of these kids wouldn't even waste a year in college but they don't and it's easier for them to just use the more popular NCAA as a pseudo minor league system much like college football.

The only negative I could probably agree with a two year rule is that basketball is a sport in which an 18-19 year old can come in and make an immediate impact unlike football (which you probably only legitimately have 1-2 kids every 10 years or so that could do that)

Well one and done's killed GaTech bball so I am ALL for this.

Besides, as bad as the NBA is right now, they need to only have 16 teams... sheesh!

And Cuban sees behind the whole AAR (or whatever it's called) that punishes colleges for not graduating enough kids. You develop the D-League and offer proper pay and even let those kids still enter the draft will weed out those kids that had no business in college in the first place.

ANd those kids will need somewhere to go because colleges are starting to weed them out. We have had kids get rejected because of questionable grades, attitudes and activities online.

nobody has forced these teams to draft the one-and-done players.

Actually most of the time they do that is because of owners and fans. How many guys have been bypass because they were a household name in at some top college? See the Spur's roster and how many of those gusy are still in the league versu the various guys drafted ahead of most of them. Or look at Dirk in Dallas-where would Dallas be if they kept the bigger name Robert Traylor? WHo is dead.
