My Take On The Student-Athlete vs. HBCU Problem.

Everyone is talking about how HBCUs can't get black athletes to play on their teams. But the last time I checked almost all the kids that have or currently attend HBCUs are black. So what's the problem? Are our current athletes not good enough for ya'll?

They talking about the 5 to 4 star recruits not the 3 to 2 star recruits.

So they are not good enough.

You know how some of them on this page are. They think about the past and how we couldn't go to the other man's school, so the swac had the run of the good black athletes down south. Now it seems that every kid you see would rather got to even FCS schools other than swac schools, so I think it's more Lamenting on what we had.

Folks dog JSU all day about our white qb.............we as HBCU's are stuck in a horrible OLD WAY of thinking...

Folks think just because we are an HBCU we should get the elite black athlete or since their parents went to an HBCU there child should automatically attend an HBCU...He is a white why is he playing QB for an HBCU...Sum Folks on TSPN are horrible....

you must have just started paying attention to "smack"... You forgot alot of your jsu folk dogged Su about Marcus Jacoby?

Serious question, Sperm: Why is it a problem that UAPB didn't recruit your daughter if you wouldn't let your dog play for them? Maybe the coaches knew that and didn't waste their time or your time. :noidea:

Its no problem, its about being recruited and not recruited. I didn't like the fact that UAPB thought they could evaluate Kristin during her senior season when plenty other schools had seen enough of her to extend a scholarship offer to her regardless of how she played her senior season. Mind you, the school she chose beat UAPB by 50 this year.

The fact is I know for a fact that the women basketball program at UAPB is probably the worst in all of division I. One should not expect a D1 athlete to commit to UAPB. I'm told that Monte Coleman son is a pretty good football player in Arkansas, if not one of the best, but he is considering Arkansas, Ole Miss and others. So if the head coach can't get his own son to play for him, then don't worry about landing a blue-chipper.

My point exactly.

Why spend your time and money recruiting a kid you know you won't get. Using that time and money doing something that will yield results for the school is much more productive.

From reading most of these responces in here, we have no one to blame but outselves...

But my question is this.. if WE "hbcu/SWAC" grads don't do it ... WHO IN THE HELL WILL?!?!?!
:retard:

Another question...

Why do we continue to come on here complain about the state our programs are in.. when it is painfully obvious most of us would DARE send their kid to a HBCU?!?!

Last question...

What's the "website" for again?!?!

Is it to come on here and see who is in WORSE shape than the next school to make us feel a little better about our school even though ALL of our schools are in crappy situations?

That sound about right.... Isn't this what the "NEGGAS" in the hoods do on street corners, barber shops and beauty salons? (the ones the barely finished high school)

Sound like to me we are following in their footsteps....

Because they were the FIRST ones to tell HBCUs "hell no"..... when their kids with no father that had mad talents were being prostituted by these Flagship state schools.. that we all pay taxes to....

I know learn that if any body or group of people will make a change in our BLACK kids minds to look at HBCUs the same was WE did... We will not find them on this website... maybe they are over on the MEAC page...

~shrugs~

We demanded equality. We got it. And now we are suffering for it -- at least when it comes to HBCU athletic programs trying to recover our lost sheep known as the great young black athlete. I don't know the ages of the people on the site, but from my research young black athletes since the 60s have wanted to attend PWCs.

White folks put there discriminatory beliefs behind them and accepted us into their institutions to further raise their profiles, bring in revenue and win championships.

I also find it rather interesting that a lot of the same members on here can lament how HBCUs are losing out on the four and five star recruits, but at the same time are lauding the achievements of the SEC, ACC and Big Ten or are in some cases riled up about the lack of opportunities afforded to black head coaches at the major collegiate football and basketball level.

Are we really suffering? Some folks readily admit our programs are not up to par, but think Black athletes should attend them anyway. That's ridiculous. That's like wanting to win the Kentucky Derby while riding a mule. It's not going to happen.

Like Sperm's daughter, other kids deserve to enjoy the best opportunity available to them. Whether that is athletics or academics. This belief that Black people should attend Black schools just because they are Black was okay when that was the best alternative for us. It was the only alternative for a long time. Now, people have choices and you can't fault anyone for taking the choice most beneficial to them.

HBCUs have to become the best option. Whatever that means. Or at least be a good alternative before expecting the tide of good students and good athletes going elsewhere to turn. Anything else is just wishful thinking and a waste of time.

Real Deep, man I have felt the same way about many of the comments I've read on this forumn. I understand frustration, but college educated black folk should know plenty about overcoming adversity and perservering but instead, as you said on this thread, you hear a lot of street negroe mentality.

Man I had to really sit back and read a lot of this shyt that usually fly over my head to see where most of these folk are coming from...

You go on the SEC website..... they respect each other institutions WAY more than we do on here... they talk VERY little about us.. unless they saw one of our bands and was "amused"....

But over here most of all of the REAL sports talk is about OUTSIDE conferences..

Most of sports talk when it comes to HBCUs on here is close to 100% "smack"... and most of us on here mean their hate from their heart... but PRAISE the hell out of these other conferences...

I know it sounds cliche'.. but that's typical slave mentality...

Man I sit and wonder sometimes... "Is it all about who can complain the most about our schools?" All we read is how horrible HBCUs are aat this and that, and how we "they" to do this and that, or that they have no marketing plan.

They can market all they want, but when a product is getting nothing but bad reviews from its users, it makes potential buyers reluctant to buy. Then we don't complain to the right people so that they can get things fixed.

We as alums (users) need to change our own mindsets first before we can expect things to change at our schools.

Exactly...

And it "should" start here unless most of us aren't mature enough to move in a different and better direction...

Hell what other website have a large group of HBCU grads than this site?

If it ain't being "attempted" here....why should we ever be on here complaining?

I say just continue to the "dog and pony" show.."thks Pop33" and continue to be a clear reflection on and fall of our HBCU's...

you must have just started paying attention to "smack"... You forgot alot of your jsu folk dogged Su about Marcus Jacoby?

Most folks didn't dog yall for signing Jacoby. Folks dogged the way yall did Jacoby. Let's not act like SU fans loved that kid.

I actually agree with what you say. I don't agree with the mentality that black kids should attend HBCUs because they just happen to be black and if one doesn't, are bad people. Folks are going to do what they believe is best for them no matter what. Going to a black school does not make one more black than going to a PWC makes one less black.

Our president didn't attend an HBCU, but folks love him to death. Heck, his kids probably won't attend an HBCU either. But I doubt the majority of blacks will think less of the Obama family.

The fact of the matter is some of us feel that blacks allowed Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Ohio State and other PWCs to take way the ability of HBCU programs to be just like Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Ohio State.

We see those talented black kids on those teams, and we wonder why those athletes couldn't be doing the same thing at Grambling, Jackson State, Morgan State, Howard and Southern like back in the day when they had the prized product.

Deep down inside we want to be just like those BCS schools we moan that are stealing "our" athletes. It's an ego thing. It would make us feel more secure about our standing in the college landscape. It would validate our existence. I believe that is how a lot of people who post on here see it. They might not be open about it, but I know it is somewhere in the subconcious.

Honestly, I don't care. I think HBCUs have educated and produced a ton of great students and athletes over the years. But that's just me.

Reading some of these comments make me wonder if we really appreciate the student-athletes who attend HBCUs.

I only went to class with dude.. so I wouldn't have a clue but ok...

No one said anything about the students and teammates (well most of the teammates) but let's be honest. A lot of yall didn't want him there. It was similiar to Haren at JSU except yall were winning with Jacoby. He was decent and yall had one of the most talented squads in BCF around him. Then those NYT articles and that Minority Quarterback book didn't make it much better.

I and I am sure many others on here appreciate ANY and EVERY kid that attends a HBCU..

But if you are suggesting we sit here and appreciate the talent or "lack there of" we see week in and week out and especially when we play OOC games...you done lost your mind.

Fielding kids with VERY little talents does very little to boast the image of our HBCUs.... Just like those SEC schools know fielding SMART AVERAGE talented white kids does very little to boast their talent...
So they go in OUR neighborhoods....

Aight...
Southern University did a white kid wrong... we did not appreciate him.... We acted very badly towards him... is this the messege you want everyone to know and understand.. better yet appreciate?
:shrugs:

I hope you all realize that only 3 or 4 out of every 20 HBCU grads send their kids back. That number gets even smaller for those on the higher income scale. I heard from a college recruiter that it goes down two like 1 or 2 out of 20. :shame: We want what others have when we make it. For some reason we think the other side is always better.

They talking about the 5 to 4 star recruits not the 3 to 2 star recruits.

Has anyone ever thought about this little fact?

Forget just talking about coaches following up on a recruit. The point that everybody is overlooking these days is that our schools don't even offer degrees in fields these kids want to even study. I'll bet HBCU's not having the programs these kids want to go into knocks out 90% from even looking at us in 2010. With us, HBCU's, it's all about what we offer on the field and nobody take this half of the equation into consideration.

Example:
Go to a HBCU and basically study the "basic majors", (teaching, Engerneering, Law, medical, etc), or go to University of California and study Underwater Marine Biology, Rocket science, medical Reasearch, etc, ...........just saying. 99% of us don't have 2 out of the 4 fields of study I listed up there as an example. I know JSU don't have any Medical or Law degree programs so any 2, 3, 4 or 5 star athlete aspiring to become Doctor, for example, ain't comming to JSU.

How many 4 or 5 star BLACK athletes going to school for Rocket science, medical Reasearch..

And what is "Engerneering"?

He has a point though. You have to offer what the kids want. And you have to do it on a level that is competitive with everybody else.

Ok.
You are smart, clever, and showed how far beneath you I am.

Discussing things is wasted here. You went right back to the FOOTBALL FIELD and overlooked everything I said just to post like you to slow to understand whats being said.
Oh well.................Back to "YT stealing our athletes". Thats the only thing that will go over here. We got to keep bad YT from having more influence over our kids than we do. Bad YT.
