BulldogM.Ed.23
Bulldog Fan/Supporter
I first learned about her through Public Enemy's 2nd Album "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back" at a time where I had began to understand there was HIS--> Story and then there was untold History to learn on our own...
Through my own readings and research, I pieced together who Chuck D was referring to in "Rebel Without a Pause," when he rhymed, "Supporter of Chesimard." Having later learned that she renamed herself Assata Shakur, by the time her step nephew Tupac began to make some noise in the rap game (with Words of Wisdom), I clearly understood why he was the way he was (his success and challenges)...
Her life remained fascinating. I mean, black and bold was definitely who she was to me. Understanding this country and how it came to be, one can clearly understand why she was America's Most Wanted Black Woman with a $2 million Bounty on her head and being sought even in her final days (the powers that be do not like to take losses).
So I very much respected her boldness and bravery. To me, these where some of her most powerful words---> "In reality, armed struggle historically has been used by people to liberate themselves... But the question lies in when do people use armed struggle... There were people [in the BLA] who absolutely took the position that it was just time to resist, and if black people didn't start to fight back against police brutality and didn't start to wage armed resistance, we would be annihilated."
Anyhow and again, much respect to her for being strong, standing up for what she believed in, and the efforts in liberating those of us she felt connected to.....
