Mississippi Valley State is hoping to make a big splash when it arrives on the West Coast for its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1996.

The Southwestern Athletic Conference champion Delta Devils ? winners of nine straight games ? are the 16th seed in the West Region of the NCAA Tournament and will play in the first round against one of the most prestigious programs in college basketball history in UCLA, the top seed in the region.

The two teams will play at 8:55 p.m. Thursday in Anaheim, Calif., at the Honda Center.

Players, coaches and school officials met the news of playing UCLA with great excitement as they gathered together on campus in Itta Bena to watch the NCAA Selection Show Sunday ? less than 24 hours after defeating instate rival Jackson State 59-58 in a thrilling SWAC Tournament championship game.

?This is a happy time in the Valley,? Dr. Roy Hudson, Valley?s interim president, told the crowd. ?We?re going from the Mississippi Valley to the Fernando Valley, and we plan to show those people in Los Angeles just what the Valley is all about.

?I am so proud of our coaches and players for all their hard work. We might not be the biggest or richest school in our conference, but we have the most heart. And that?s why we?re where we?re at now.?

In November and December, Mississippi Valley State underwent a series of punishing "guarantee games" not uncommon in the historically black conferences, taking blowout losses in places like Pittsburgh, Baylor and Washington State (the latter, a demoralizing 76-21 decision). As recently as mid-February, the Delta Devils looked helplessly ordinary, struggling to a 6-6 record in the SWAC. But third-year coach James Green and his charges turned up the defensive intensity, and haven't lost since Feb. 16. After a 59-58 win over defending champion Jackson State in Saturday night's championship game, the team is riding a nine-game victory streak as it prepares for its first NCAA appearance since 1996.


In a league full of long-distance bombers, the Delta Devils' perimeter D was the best among conference teams, holding opponents to just 31 percent 3-point shooting (21st in Division I). This green and red-clad team is led by Carl Lucas, a 6-5 senior who led the squad with 12.9 ppg. Lucas has a remarkable vertical jump, which he uses for high-flying jumpers and for collecting rebounds (5.5 rpg). Valley's emotional leader and defensive heartbeat is combo guard Standford Speech (11.0 ppg), one of the streakiest shooters in the nation. The 6-3 senior took a team-high 285 shots and made just 35 percent of them. Overall, Green sorted through no fewer than 19 different suited-up players -- only Army had more (21).

I WANT Valley to win. But reality OOC sez....:shame: Or, was that 76-21 blowlout loss to Washington St by Valley a FLUKE earlier in the year? Planet...earth. Conference...SWAC. Be realistic for once. lol

Valley has a shot. Folks that watch basketball know that our biggest problem when playing the big boys is TURNOVERS. If we take care of the ball, we can play with UCLA. They don't have a dynamic offense, to where they are consistently blowing people out. UCLA's calling card is DEFENSE. If Larry Cox shows up to play, it will be a ggod game. We just need to play like we belong and force them into turnovers.
