They still haven't recovered from the merger yet  but for real, they just need the right coach there to get them up against those power schools in Jackson. Like my school (RCHS who GW only beat by 11) we've kind of adjusted to 3A life (still have to get used to saying that... we were 3A at the same time South Panola was in the early 90's but we went 2A the first year I was there. Went back to 3A in the mid 2000's).

Coahoma County and Eastside keep decent teams. Mound Bayou and Shaw could be monsters at 1A not having to worry about CCHS at 2A.

Lets go East Side c/o 99!! yes back at the big house.. Hope we can pull it off! Our girls should have been there also but Belmont took it. Yes East Side is always apart of the conversation except for in Baseball and Softball, but we're working on that. Trojans will be there Saturday and half of Cleveland also... To my Bolivar County neighbors Shaw and Mound Bayou take care of business!

Take Five: Defending girls basketball champs finding repeat bid is not easy..........Clarion Ledger

Top programs vie for repeat

Four defending champions are returning to the Mississippi Coliseum this week.

The chances of all four of them repeating during the 2014 MHSAA basketball championships, which begin Friday?

Zero.

H.W. Byers made the jump to Class 2A this season after winning the last three titles in the MHSAA’s smallest classification. The Lady Lions, who last won a 2A title in 2009, open tournament play on Friday when they face Newton, which is a serious threat to dethrone reigning champ Scott Central.

Defending 5A champ Canton limps into the Coliseum after having five of its top seven player battle injuries this season, including senior Jamilah Sanders who’s played through a bone chip in her knee this season. Senior forward Andreal Fleming should help take some of the burden off Sanders.

Hidden gems in MHSAA semifinal basketball games............Clarion Ledger
We know about the stars — Callaway’s Malik Newman, Provine’s D’Angelo West and Scott Central’s Victoria Vivians, among others — but here are a few players you might have heard little about who could have big impacts at the Mississippi Coliseum:

Boys

Deandre Bolton
Hinds AHS | Center

Bulldog center is perfect complement to Sterling Joiner and Trevarius Draper, averaging 10.5 points and 9.7 rebounds. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound big man, at least by Hinds AHS’ standards, is capable of bumping his scoring totals into the mid-teens. That could prove pivotal in the 1A semis against Coldwater, which eliminated the Bulldogs a year ago.

Jon Paul Davis
East Side | Forward

Davis is long enough (6-5) to give opposing teams nightmares on the wing. He averages 17.1 points and 9.7 rebounds for the Trojans, who are seeking their first title, and played some of his better basketball down the stretch. He had 27 points against Kemper County in the North 3A finals.

Xavian Stapleton---Madison Central

Take Five: Boys 6A among toughest divisions in MHSAA 2014 tournament............Clarion Ledger
Parity reigns in 6A

For basketball purists, Class 6A is as good as it gets.

How so?

This year’s semifinals feature a big man in 6-foot-11 Grenada senior Joniah White, hot-handed scorers like Provine’s D’Angelo West and Gulfport’s Jahshire Hardnett, and silky smooth combo guards such as Madison Central’s Xavian Stapleton.

There won’t be better parity in any other division during the 2014 MHSAA basketball championships, which begin today at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson. Three of the four teams have been staples in the Super 10 this year, excluding Grenada, and Madison Central and Gulfport were ranked No. 1 earlier in the season.

The Admirals, who last won a title in 2002, and Jaguars face off in the semifinals in a rematch of a Dec. 28 game that the Jaguars narrowly won. Madison Central finished as runner-up a year ago, but playing for a chance at the program’s first title since 2006 could depend on LeRoy Buchanan and teammate Chase Carroll complementing Stapleton against the Gulfport Dandy Dozen duo of Hardnett and Dimitri Cook.

The Highschool Girls Scoring Champ and #1 Girls player in the State Victoria Vivians. If you can, go see her. Mississippi State Signee. That girl can light it up from anywhere on the court with bodies draped on her, averaging 38 ppg. Last game she scored 64 points. Game before that, only 54.

Victoria Vivians explodes in second half to lead Scott Central in 2A semis............Clarion Ledger
Dandy Dozen senior Victoria Vivians managed a double-double with 43 points and 26 rebounds, despite being triple teamed for the majority of the game, and Scott Central overcame a slow start to roll past Coahoma County 72-58 in Friday’s Class 2A semifinal matchup at the Mississippi Coliseum.

Vivians, the state’s most decorated scorer, was held in check during the first half, scoring seven points for the Lady Rebels (27-6), who will try to defend their 2A title against H.W. Byers on Thursday at 1 p.m.

But Vivians finished with 35 points in the second half and had nine blocks, finishing one shy of a triple-double.

Boys semi....2A
Weatherall leads S.V. Marshall to narrow win in 2A semis..............Clarion Ledger

Demarcus Weatherall scored a game-high 28 points as S.V. Marshall edged Calhoun City 62-58 in the Boys Class 2A semifinals of the MHSAA State Tournament on Friday.

The Tigers (27-6) will play the Baldwyn-Heidelberg winner for the Class 2A state championship on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. S.V. Marshall is seeking second 2A state title in three years.

“Demarcus told me if he scored 25 points or more I would have to buy him dinner,” S.V. Marshall coach Antwayn Patrick said. “Missed a lot of free throws and open shots in first half, but in second half we played more as a complete team.”

Coach aims to get Pascagoula its first state championship
...........Clarion Ledger Video / Read

It didn’t take Ronald Norman long to do with Pascagoula what he’s done with other teams in his career — get to the Mississippi Coliseum.

Actually, it took one season, to be exact.

Norman leads the Panthers against Vicksburg at 2:30 p.m. today in the boys semifinal round of the Class 5A basketball championships in Jackson.

Pascagoula, who last advanced to a state title game in 1977, hired Norman in April on the heels of Tony Combs’ retirement, hoping he could do what others who preceded him couldn’t and win a championship.

Rahim Lockhart leads Jags back to Big House........................Jaguars, who play Wednesday, seeking first title since '06...................... Clarion Ledger
Rahim Lockhart has been successful just about everywhere he has been.

Lockhart guided Taylorsville to the Mississippi Coliseum in 2008 and 2009. He spent the 2009-10 season at Grenada where he guided the Chargers to the first round of the 6A playoffs.

But, he never quite had the rebuilding project like he had to do at Madison Central, which will face Gulfport on Wednesday in the semifinal round of the Class 6A state tournament.

The Jaguars won the Class 5A state championship in 2006. But from 2007-2010 Madison Central went 35-73, including an 8-16 record the year before Lockhart took over the program.

3A Velma Jackson has been good all year. They sent a message early when they went over to Murrah and beat the shorts off the Mustangs at the beginning of the season.

Velma Jackson continues to crush 3A foes.............Clarion Ledger
Pure domination.

That’s the only way to describe Velma Jackson against Class 3A opponents so far this season.

And it was the same story on Saturday. Behind Kendarius Smith and Quinndary Weatherspoon, the Falcons cruised past Kemper County 66-36 in the semifinal round of the Class 3A MHSAA boys state championships at the Mississippi Coliseum.

Weatherspoon, Velma Jackson’s Dandy Dozen forward, scored a game-high 23 points. Smith added 22 points, while Moses Greenwood added six points and grabbed 16 rebounds.

The Falcons (33-2), ranked No. 6 in the Clarion-Ledger Super 10 and No. 1 in 3A, advance to Friday’s 2:30 p.m. title game, where it will try to repeat as 3A champs against Cleveland East Side.

And my Mighty Crystal Springs Tigers came up short Saturday.
WE WUZ ROBBED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Naw...............

Dashiyah Agnew, right, scored seven points in Booneville's 43-32 victory in the Class 3A semifinals Saturday. / Bob Smith/Special to The Clarion-Ledger

Booneville girls surge past Crystal Springs, into 3A title game
Adallice Young scored a game-high 25 points, Maria Lauderdale chipped in seven and posted 12 rebounds and Booneville fended off Crystal Springs 43-32 in the semifinal round of the Class 3A girls basketball championships on Saturday at Mississippi Coliseum.

The Lady Devils (26-6) opened the second half on a 9-1 run to build a 13-point lead. Crystal Springs cut the deficit to 41-32 with 1:32 left in the fourth quarter, but that’s as close as it would get.

Booneville advances to Friday’s 3A championship game, where it will face the winner of Saturday’s Belmont-Hazlehurst bout at 1 p.m.

Damn we played Get Ready's High School for the title. We owe them mofos from the early 80s title game that featured former Alcorn greats Eddie Archie and Aaron Brandon of C'way vs Michael Phelps of Vicksburg. Phelps was player of the year in MS. Same year Lancaster Gordon came out of HS from Jim Hill and headed to Louisville. The SIP had some ballers. Just got overshadowed by Football.

Anyway Roll Big Orange.

LOL. Man I am still mad they beat Buck Archie and Aaron Brandon back in the day right before I got to C'way from Brinkley. You know Buck "Eddie Archie" and his brothers grew up on Nakoma in my hood. Got to rep that Norwood from the old days. LOL. Have to SMH now though. Potholes in North Jackson when we grew up was unheard off. Well at least not as bad as it is now.
