Mid Season 2011 Bands (surprises, disappointments, what you expected)?

IMO, this is one of the better seasons as it comes to bands. I'm one of those people that never watches a clip of any opposing bands until JSU meets them and as of right now, I've enjoyed all the bands so far. My only 2 disappointments was the Boom bringing the Memphis show to BR and Bama St. playing almost all old tunes during pre-game/in-game until the 5th.

TBH, I'm actually interested seeing The World Famed this year. This will be my only experience seeing them late in the season. Usually we still get that "band camp" band which is a real lackluster. But now we see them in their pre-Bayou Classic stage so hopefully I won't be disappointed in that.

Can't wait to see the Storm vs. Boom. After 25 years, they finally sit across from each other on the field.

Is the boom coming to Huntsville this year?

Hopefully you just laid this out there for us to start thinking about it. As you should know of me by now, I don't start making evaluations until now. Upto this point we have been in discovery zone (which is why I always like for the SU/JSU matchup to come after mid-season).

I have heard and seen both great and awful stuff. My biggest disappointment is that the downward trends don't seem to be changing.
  • We still have squads of DMs serving as dance troupes rather than drum majors.
  • ALL (did I say all???) of the bands dance badly; but that's only because DANCING IS NOT WHAT THEY DO BEST!!!!!!! Kill all of the dance routines and put another drill in there!!!!!!!!
  • None seem to be able to pull off dynamic contrast WITHIN a song - especially one that is uptempo.
  • Most of the sousa sections still sound like gangs of underpowered 15" woofers poorly installed in the trunk of a hoopdy.
  • If I hear Get Ready played in another field show by the Boom, I might get physically sick.

On the other hand, the pleasantries have been rewarding.
  • The stupid screeching (no, I did not say screaming) by most of the trumpet sections is way down, making for a much better listening experience.
  • The horn arrangers are doing a better job of writing balance into their work. (Percussion writing is still a weakness.)
  • It has been nice to see a few different drills thus far. There is hope.

Well DaCon, you must've been feeling pretty good these last two weeks with the Boom not playing Get Ready. But you're gonna be sick again this weekend

I must admit, I am very proud of AAMU. They sound great. The best I have seen in a long time.

Good topic.
I haven't seen anybody this year and haven't really watched too many clips. I'll see the Boom this weekend at homecoming.
