Michael Jordan applauds son's decision to play basketball as walk-on at Illinoishttp://sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/news?slug=ap-michaeljordan-son&prov=ap&type=lgns

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) -- Michael Jordan applauded his son's decision to walk on at Illinois rather than accept a scholarship to a smaller college.

The basketball legend and his 18-year-old son, Jeffrey, appeared on the "Today" show Friday.

Jordan said his son decided he wanted the challenge of proving himself at the Big Ten school.

"I'm thinking that's what I would have done," Jordan said.

Talking on the Illinois campus, NBC's Matt Lauer asked if the son had ever beaten his father in a basketball game.

"Ask him how many times," Jordan said to Lauer, knowing the answer would be once, before admitting that he wasn't thrilled about it at the time.

Jordan, a 6-2 guard at Loyola Academy prep school in Wilmette, Ill., chose Illinois over Valparaiso in April. He was a three-year starter at Loyola Academy and two-year All Catholic League player.

Chump, we could've pimped him for his dad money at an HBCU. I always tell people who go to white schools, you'll never experience things like you do at an HBCU. I think all black students should try a black school...They just don't know what they are missing out on

I often tease my kids. They want to attend PB games instead of UCA. They enjoy that HBCU climate.

Jordan's son wasn't going to a HBCU unless it was like Morehouse like Denzel's and other rich black folks send their kids for some reason. Plus I think MJs kids are homers. When all you have been around is them other folks then how do you expect a kid to want to do anything else? Hell MJ didn't even go to a HBCU. I am sure they feel they have been exposed to everything they need too by being MJs kids. You know how it goes. Illinois don't need MJs money. I am sure they are already a Nike school. His money will continue to go to North Carolina and their program. I think he already mentioned that somewhere.

Leslie Frazier an Alcorn grad and former DB with the Bears and current Vikings DC son is at the University of Illinois......you would think he could have taken his talent to Alcorn. But even kids who Dads when to PWCs like Jordan can't get their kids to go to own alma mater. Case in point........Terry Robiske is a LSU grad. His son is Brian Robiske the nice WR at Ohio State. Wanted to stay close to his folks.

Yeah, they won't miss the consistent national TV exposure, playing at sold-out stadiums, playing in big-time bowl games and going deep in the NCAA tournament like they get at a major PWCU.

Wow! I know those non-HBCU athletes are missing out on a lot if they don't come to an HBCU.

What you quoted me saying was not in relationship to athletes. That was for black students in general, that's why I didn't put athletes in that statment. Who in the right mind would choose a HBCU over Top level school, not too many people. I know if I would've had any one of those Pac 10 schools knocking down my door and offering me baseball schollies, I would've never came to the swac.

Plus, our talking about someone who wasn't offered a scholarship and most walk-ons barely get 2 minutes a game at big schools. However he is MJ's son, so he may get a slide. He must not have been talented enough to get any offers other than valpraiso...

Ive been to both... at the PWC, I wasnt treated like a child and generally felt like I was wanted there by administration, faculty and staff..... cant say the same about the HBCU experience. Once you have been to an all Black high school for 4 years, thats good enough "experience" for me. Now if I would have went to a predominately white high school I probably would feel different. I grew up in an all Black neighborhood and was always surrounded by Black folks growing up, so going to a HBCU wasnt a new experience for me.

Yeah, Jordan wasn't even one of the best players in the state, and with him getting few offers I guess he decided to stay close to home and be a walk-on at Illinois. But he did play 23 minutes in his first game. So he might be an OK player.

He probably could have started at Northwesten...that team is horrible.

I feel the same way.

It was either JSU or Hawaii for me. My parents didn't like the idea of their son going to a place where they could not visit me from time to time.

But JSU was good for me...I grew as a person and student, but I still wonder what it would have been like to go to school near the beach. LOL.

These are the quotes that caught my attention.

risky decision ! Give me a break.. A risky decision is walking on hoping to get a b-ball ride knowing you can't stay at the school if you don't get it. Jordan's kid will get every chance to get some pt and not be treated as a scrimmage dummy like some walk-ons are treated.

If you aren't exposed to hbcu's (especially if you don't live in that region of the country) it ain't going to cross your mind to attend. They from/live in the Chicagoland area, it's about U of I. The only hbcu's on their list would be Morehouse or Howard. And this fact was already stated.

Good one. If all you have to offer a quality athlete outside the swac region is empty seats at your championship games (indoor and outdoor) you kind of make the decision easy for them to make. That's not smack, that's just fact.

Your so right! I mean, the fab fie would have never been fabulous at jackson state or southern. No ncaa tournament final fours, not even a sweet 16... and none of them would have made it to the nba. lol

all the things you mentioned come with winning and you can't win if you don't have the student-athletes to compete.

What reasons have HBCUs presented to make the five best players in the nation to come and play at an HBCU school in any sport?

That makes complete since if your a blue chip recruit, but it seems to me no one was knocking down the door at Jordans house.

As an alumnus of the University of Illinois, I wish Jeffrey the best and trust he'll have a well-rounded experience on & off the basketball court!

Why do we as Black folk, continue to turn over our best asset, talented young African-Americans who are gifted academically, athletically or artistically to PWC's and leave the rest for HBCUs?

I feel that one should be able to attend the school that they want to attend. However,.......

Why do we as Black folk, continue to turn over our best asset, talented young African-Americans who are gifted academically, athletically or artistically to PWC's and leave the rest for HBCUs?

This is an excellent question. There is no law that the academically, artistically and athletically gifted should only attend a large predominately White institution.

Now you know high school kids care more than that.

You asked what they could be offered... I told you all they NEED...if they are the best.

Do you think that if LeBron James had gone to SU for a year that he would be any less highly-touted for the draft? Remember, he had committed to Akron of all places.
