Men prefer being solo over a bad marriage: study

SYDNEY (Reuters Life!) - Bachelor Carl Weisman got fed up of being classified as a playboy, a loser or a commitment-phobe so he set out to find out exactly why he and a growing number of eligible men were steering clear of marriage.

Weisman, 49, conducted a survey of 1,533 heterosexual men to research a book aiming to give women an insight into why some smart, successful men opted to stay single -- and help lifelong bachelors understand why they are still the solo man at parties.

He concluded that most men were not afraid of marriage -- but they were afraid of a bad marriage.

"Men are 10 times more scared of marrying the wrong person than of never getting married at all," Weisman told Reuters in a telephone interview.

"This is the first generation of people who have grown up with bad divorces. People assume there is something wrong if you don't marry but these are men who have made a different choice and not given in to social pressures."

The release of his book "So Why Have You Never Been Married? - Ten Insights into Why He Hasn't Wed," comes amid a growing trend for more people to stay single, with less social or religious pressures on men -- and women -- to tie the knot.

Weisman said U.S. figures showed that in 1980 about 6 percent of men aged in their early 40s had never married but this number had now risen to 17 percent.

AFRAID TO MAKE MISTAKES

Weisman said his online survey found there are three groups of bachelors -- about 8 percent who never want to marry, 62 percent want to marry but of which half won't settle for anything less than perfection, and about 30 percent who are on the fence.

Four out of 10 bachelors did not want children compared to three out of 10 wanting to be a father. The rest were undecided.

But while 72 percent of respondents said they were not afraid of marriage, about half of them said the situation that scared them most was marrying the wrong person.

"It's so important to these men to get it right. My best advice to single women after bachelors is to be patient. If you're in a hurry to get married you'll be frustrated," he said.

 Good article and women prefer being solo over being in a bad marriage too. At least, this woman does...but some folks just wanna be married so badly that they'll put up w/any and everything just b/c. More power to em...I refuse to be unhappy and miserable. Life is waaaaaaaaay too short for that...I thank GOD for my sane, peaceful mind/life. :jump:

:goof: Back off heffa's. :goof:

nobody wants to be in a bad marriage, I wonder why did that need to be studied?(rhetorical) they must have gotten a federal grant to study it.

I think you could substitute the word "date" for the word "marry" and the article is still true. No one wants to waste time on a "buster." That's why I always stated that I KNOW I'm not a match for anyone because I consider myself a "buster." :swink: lol

Sigmund Freud send...lol

Yeah, I was kinda wondering why it needed to be said. Who is looking for the bad marriage? Duh!

I also think the entire premise is a bit...pussified. I mean, you don't want to get married because the break up might be bad? So...you don't drive your car because you might get in an accident and be paralyzed for life? You don't go to work because you might get fired/laid off after 3 years? You don't date the nice chick because she MIGHT leave you later on?

You end up with a bunch of dudes sitting on the sidelines just talking bout the game but never gettting in the game. Buck up dudes. Shat.

Women are crazy in 2008. Someone needs to do a study to show how the female population between 25-45 are mentally unstable.

Not only getting in the game but blaming their pussifiedness (sp) on the women.
Sounds like the TSPN Chapter of Bitter Bunch Club, Inc.

Then that should work to your advantage then.

A man get's divorced, he won't have enough money or property left over to by a Yugo.

The court's will make sure of that.
Buck UP.

Look's like more men are SMARTING UP.

Let the pussifiedness continue. I'mma work with the one slanging strong enough dyck to handle a strong black woman like me. Peace out.

I over heard some dudes talking at the airport in Nashville lastnight about how he was going to court to day over a domestic case trying to get it thrown out. The guy was telling his boy that he and has wife got to arguing one night and someone called the cops. He said he didn't even touch her and she told the cops that no one had even touched each other they were just yelling and they still locked him up for a domestic case. He said apparently if the police comes to your home someone has to go to jail even do know one even got to fighting and it i the brother they are going to lock up 9 times out of 10. The dude was saying he now risk losing his job over a domestic case and he didn't touch her. I didn't know they could lock you up for arguing and not hitting someone just because you got mad.
