Memphis v. Kansas - Here we go

Calliperi turned Memphis back to a national power. They can recruit all over the country. They dont just have to have the Memphis area on lock like they use to. Name one national power that only recruits in its city.

The majority of large universities don't exist in major cities. When Memphis was dominating, their roster did contain local players like Elliot Perry, Penny Hardaway and the teams prior. I didn't realize until this season that the school had lost it's local base. Almost half of U of T's roster is made up of players from TN. But when it's all said and done, Callipari did a good job of ressurecting(sp) the program.

The HARSH reality is Memphis will return to being Memphis. The POWER schools (UNC, DUKE, KANSAS, Michigan, UCLA, Georgetown, etc.) will always have a good chance of landing top recruits. Schools like Memphis will find it HARD to maintain good recruits even after a championship appearance (See Florida, Arkansas, Ohio State).

The POWER basketball schools will always be the POWER basketball schools. All of the rest, simply have a SHINNING MOMENT, then they return back to their original state.

If those kids LEAVE for the NBA, then Memphis will fill the HURT moreso than the benefit from being in the Final Four. It happened to Arkansas, Florida, Syracuse, and Ohio State.

Sperm, you can take Syracuse and Ohio State out of that mix. Ohio State has always had coaching issues. Thad Matta is fixing that. 3 All- Americans are on their way to Ohio State for next season. Also when Garry Williams was there and Randy Ayers back in the day......OSU had a good run. Bad coaching hires after Williams left for Maryland and Ayers got fired caused Ohio State to not be competative. Syracuse and Jimmy B have always been a Big East power. They are certainly no flash in the pan. Jimmy B just couldn't win the big one until Carmelo got there. But he shole had plenty of Final Four appearances. No way you can put them in the same category with Memphis. If Calipari went to Ohio State or Syracuse he would stay loaded with talent. Aint hard to recruit kids to neither one of those schools. Florida will be fine as well as long as Donovan stays around. Coaches make the program and then the program carries on by hiring the right guy. Look at UCLA. You can't get no legendary than that program but wrong coaching hires caused them to have some down years. But they are still UCLA. Memphis will always just be Memphis.....unless they get on a run and build a reputation of winning titles like Denny Crum did for Louisville. Actually Michigan is the one you can take out of there for basketball as being a big boy. They aint done nothing since the Fab 5 was there. Michigan State and Izzo have a better program and get better recruits than Michigan. You can replace them with Indiana if you going to have a Big 10 school in there. Hell even Michael Redd and OSU went to a Final Four several years ago.

Bill Self was called the Roy Williams of college basketball before winning this season. He had come close many times with no titles. Now he is seen as a saviour. LOL. I think Roy left Kansas in good shape and Self has finally gotten the monkey off his back like Roy did in 05 and Jim Boeheim did with Carmelo. They all finally won the big Dance. Until last night Self was just like those other 2 coaches I named before they won. If Memphis had won that game. Folks would have been saying Self just can't coach and win the big one. Actually Self said it best himself. He is still the same coach that he was before Chalmers hit that shot and even if he had missed it, he still is the same level of coach. Basically saying he aint no worse or better just because Kansas won. Of course we all know how society looks at him now...........A WINNER.

You can remove Michigan from that list as well. Big Blue hasn't been good in basketball in a while. They won the NIT a couple years while Tommy Amaker was their, but he couldn't get them to the tournament. Michigan use to be a freaking powerhouse in basketball. Now Michigan State has left them in the dust. I blame the NCAA for going after them because of Ed Martin. They got put on probation.

Michigan State has history over the last 10 years. They won a Championship in 2000. I think they have been to 4 Final Fours in the last 10 years.

Michigan has fell off completely, but they have plenty of basketball history. Anybody with knowledge of college basketball history knows that.
