Mayweather vs. Maidana fight almost canceled

If all things had been equal I think the often unspoken rule in boxing still exists: You have to Beat the Champ! I don't think the judges would have given it to Maidana if it had been close to even. I think the guy would have had to really Rock Money or make his knee touch the canvas to have pulled off a close win-Although I was only about 85-90% sure Money would get the decision from the judges when I was watching the fight that night! lol!

I am a HUGE Money fan but not bias. Maidana missed a bunch of punches but connected a lot too (too much for my comfort) and threw more than Floyd though Money connect percentages were higher. We'll have to agree to disagree on the margin. IMHO, that fight was close enough for Money to get robbed. I felt those unofficial cards that Showtime had (1 and 2 round margins) were about right. The crowd certainly didn't impact my persperctive because I was pulling for Money (but frustrated at times). I couldn't stand Money staying on the ropes for so long. Take it for what it's worth but, if that fight would have been in a place like San Antonio, Money would have been in trouble with the judges. You have to really know boxing to know what I'm talking about (not saying that you don't).

I respectfully disagree. I could easily see why someone would have had this fight close. I am a very hard judge when it comes to clean effective punching. I had the fight 117-111 for Floyd after watching the fight again but had it 116-112 on fight night. That's 8 rounds to 4. There are times when I call people out for not knowing boxing when they score fights close that shouldn't be, but this is not one of those times. Maidana came to win and tried. I can't take that away from him. He landed more punches than I expected vs Floyd and deserved credit for that. I just barely had Floyd winning 3 of the 8 rounds I gave to him. I am a really big on clean shots and the ability to make your opponent miss. Some people, (I am not saying you), go crazy when a guy is throwing punches like a mad man and the crowd is going crazy. I look past all of that and watch how many punches landed clean and were effective.

For the record, I am not a big Floyd fan. I like him and respect him as one of the best fighters of all time, but I am not a die hard fan. I wanted Zab Judah, Ricky Hatton, Corrales and Baldomir to beat him when he whipped all of them. At this point, I don't see anyone out there that I would want or pick to beat him.

Some of my scorecards:
Taylor-Hopkins I 117-111 Hopkins
Taylor-Hopkins II 116-112 Hopkins
Pacquio-Marquez I 114-113 Pacquio
Pacquio-Marquez II 116-113 Marquez
Pacquio-Marquez III 116-113 Marquez
Mayweather-De La Hoya 118-110 Mayweather

After reading that Ali tweeted Money after the fight and basically said that after he healed up why not fight Pacquio next! Bringing the thought of Ali into the equation got me to starting thinking-could Money have been playing a little Rope-A-Dope in the early rounds of the fight with the thought that Maidana would tire out some in the later rounds??

I sure as hell thought Maidana would tire out. One of Money's biggest assets is his stamina. Dude trains like a mutha. When other fighters fade, he's still fresh. Ali had that advantage as well. But Maidana never took his foot off the gas. I think that had some to do with Money having a not so easier time later in the fight, though I felt Money took charge in the later rounds.

It's time to get Pacquio in the ring and shut up who believes it's going to be a good fight. For the record, I like Pac-man, but he is going to get pop shot for 6 or 8 rounds before Mayweather's stops him. It's not going to be pretty. Pac-man has too many flaws to beat Mayweathe. His off balanced punches are really going to be exposed.
