LSU, Southern football game closer to reality

All that separates A.W. Mumford Stadium and Tiger Stadium is a little more than 11 miles.

With no traffic between the city’s two Division I institutions — Southern University in north Baton Rouge and LSU, just south of downtown — the drive takes roughly 20 minutes.

And yet, in the 105 years since Southern first fielded a football program, not once has either school made the trip across town for a competitive football game.

That may soon change.

Both sides said they were interested in making such a game happen in the near future, going so far as to say casual discussions took place in recent months.

With both teams in the Dallas-Fort Worth area last weekend for their season openers, LSU President F. King Alexander attended Southern’s game at TCU in Fort Worth last Saturday, while Southern athletic director Roman Banks returned the favor the next day, attending LSU’s game against Miami at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

Rabalais: LSU playing Southern, Grambling is an idea whose time has come

The Halloween night in 1959, when Billy Cannon ran back his famous punt against Ole Miss in Tiger Stadium, Gerald Kimble swore you could hear the roars at Southern, where he and the Jaguars were also playing.

One day, perhaps very soon, the roars in Tiger Stadium will be for Southern. And for Grambling, too.

Saturday night, LSU opens its 94th season in Tiger Stadium with a game against Southeastern Louisiana. It will be just the second time the Tigers and Lions will have played in football, the only other way back in 1949. That was a decade before Cannon, in the days of Harry Truman and the Berlin Airlift. That makes LSU-SLU long on historical significance, if likely short on competitive balance.

In 2020, Nicholls State will visit Baton Rouge and play LSU in football for the first time. At that point, LSU will have played eight of the 10 other state football programs — SLU, Nicholls, Tulane, UL-Lafayette, UL-Monroe, Louisiana Tech, McNeese State and Northwestern State — all since 2009.

The only two LSU will have not played: Southern and Grambling.

It is an uncomplicated matter, really, simple and fair to resolve. LSU should host Southern and Grambling in football as well, if it is willing to play all the other state schools. Many of them — half, when you include Southern and Grambling — are Football Championship Subdivision schools.

There are strong indications those games will become a reality. Perhaps soon. LSU has entered into talks with Southern and Grambling. Nothing is definite, but nothing has cropped up as a road block, either.

If this game happens I'm there.

If it happens, I hope LSU put 102 on SU.

Nothing good is to come outta this crap. Lot of undercover racial tone.

Black ppl gotta stop being so dayum bummy, Go play another black school and make money there.

Louisiana is the most racial state/place in the world. Cacs don't like blacks and blacks don't like cacs but our asses will go over there all peaceful and docile to be accepted. Smh

Might ass well have the fans do the dougie and stanky leg on their tail-gate grounds. Smh

How will that change if they play soon it will still not be a competitive football game...Just STOP IT...But I would love to sit with SUjagtilldead in Death Valley and watch his face the whole time!

After Piyush Jindal screwed up the budget that deeply affected higher education in Louisiana, I'm sure Governor John bel Edwards is probably pushing this. Now LSU $100-plus million dollar athletic program can funnel some of that money to other State schools. LSU's Athletic Program has once already donated $36 million to its academic programs so that the university can fully function academically. Also, LSU's attendance has dropped in a 104k stadium. I'm sure they are looking at boosting their attendance with local SU fans.

LSU Athletics wants to give $36M to academics over next 5 years

Just how bad was Piyush Jindal for higher education in Louisiana?

The difference between Trump and Jindal, Trump is a delusional dummy, whereas Jindal is a delusional intellectual. Either way, they are both delusional.

Jindal was real bad. In order to boost his presidential campaign donation, Jindal gave a lot of businesses tax breaks and freebies at the expense of higher education and the State didn't get anything in return. This is why the budget comes up short every year.

The difference between Jindal and Trump is Trump is getting things done. The economy looks good under Trump. And, as a real estate developer Trump knows about building up an area to make it attractive and that's what Jindal didn't do. Jindal gave tax incentives for businesses but didn't build up the state which would attract and retain businesses. Businesses that come for tax incentives leave once the incentives are over. Trump has exceeded my expectations for him as POTUS. I don't pay much attention at all to what the media says Trump does that isn't about his political policies. I've never trusted the media.

An LSU v. SU game would be good for both schools, the city, and the football teams. Yeah, there will be stupid people on both sides but those people will be in the minority.

Trump is a con artist. Some of his past developments have gone into bankruptcy. As an engineer, I have seen all kind of attractive developments that were poorly constructed and weren't worth crap. Unlike President Obama receiving a failing economy from Bush and the Republicans, Trump inherited a rising economy from President Obama. According to some people, Reagan did a good job on the economy, until people wised up and realized he didn't. IMO, Trump is Reagan on steroids but delusional.

What Trump inherited from Obama he didn't run it into the ground. In fact, he has helped bolster the economy he inherited. Give the man his props for doing right by the economy. Because if he ran shit off the rails you'd be complaining about that.

You do realize that most things take time before the true affects are recognized. Trump only been in office for just over a year and an a half. Lets see what happens at the end of his first term, if he last that long.
