The 74th NFL draft begins Thursday night in New York. New York City? They should seriously consider moving the three-day, seven-round, bonanza to Hattiesburg or perhaps Meridian.
Neither of these quiet Mississippi outposts come close to Manhattan, but they are around the midpoint of Baton Rouge, La., and Tuscaloosa, where much of the young NFL talent has congregated and where much of the future NFL talent is and will be congregating for pre-graduate study.
For example, by the time all the members of the LSU and Alabama rosters from the 2011 season cycle out, there may be 70 in the NFL from the doubleheader LSU and Alabama split last season.
“I tell everybody, if you have a program from either or both of those games — keep it,” NFL draft expert Mike Detillier said.
In the 2012 NFL draft alone, no less than eight players from those championship games for the Southeastern Conference and BCS national titles, respectively, are expected to go in the first round Thursday night.
From LSU, cornerback Morris Claiborne will go in the first five picks, followed by defensive tackle Michael Brockers in the middle of the first round and wide receiver Rueben Randle late in the late first round.
